Newcastle vs. Crystal Palace match thread

I absolutely love Glasner and hope he signs a new deal but he is not without his flaws.

It has become very apparent that the 3-5-2 system does not work without Munoz or a similarly attacking wing back. Mitchell has never been that and Clyne is past it.

Long term the system has proved that it works but, given our injuries, he needs to be more adaptable because at the moment we're basically playing 5 at the back. I feel like until Munoz comes back or we sign Boey, we should be playing 4-3-3 or something instead.

Our squad depth and the injuries are absolutely killing us. Today it was 0-0 and Newcastle were able to bring on Barnes, Ramsey and Livramento, before then adding Woltemade and Willock.

We brought on Devenny, Uche, Drakes-Thomas, Rodney and Esse. It's not really a fair fight.

Lets be clear, we're 4 points off fifth. This is not a disastrous season and if we suddenly string a few wins together we'll be right back in the mix again.

But we need new signings, existing players back in the side and a little more tactical flexibility. We also clearly need time on the training pitch to work on set pieces.

Get Villa out the way, play the reserve team against Macclesfield and let the players have a ten day break until Sunderland.
This won't happen - talk of disrespecting the competition, disrespecting the opposition etc, and er... we might get beat!

No, don’t play the reserve team against Macclesfield. Don’t you remember the start to this awful run when we played the reserve team against KUPS. We also gave ourselves two extra play off games. We need a strong first team against Macclesfield or we will blow that as well :-(

I agree with this. I also see the logic in the argument from those who suggest we should not play a weakened team vs Macclesfield.

It’s an optimistic take too. I’d love to align with it however I am very much in ‘I can’t see us doing so and I’m struggling to even believe we’ll win again this season’ mode.

It’s also s*** football to watch for some reason. I can’t put my finger on it but something has changed. I think back (probably with nostalgia and rose tinted specs) but the games were fierce and hard fought now it seems like an inevitable outcome every time. As you said most teams seem to have 3 full teams to pick from. I miss Viera v Keane and the like.
I think we also overdo the one touch stuff. Of course it's great when it works but while other teams pass and move or play it into space we seem intent on just laying the ball off to anyone regardless of how closely he's being marked. Consequently we either misdirect a pass pretty quickly which gets intercepted or give it to someone who gets bundled over - usually with no foul resulting. Even the defenders do it round their own area which terrifies me every time.

If we can't trust players like Canvot, Uche, Esse etc against the side 15th in the National League then they shouldn't be at the club. We have players like Mateta running on fumes and they need a break or our entire season will fall apart. This is the first opportunity for that in maybe 2 months, if he goes full strength it will be absolute madness.

I tend to agree. Our fringe players are at least Championship standard. We'll be forced into using a decent bit of the first team anyway. Maybe someone coming back from injury too.

That's been driving me up the wall lately, too.

We're still creating chances but we're not taking them. Letting goals in and not scoring is really the ultimate conundrum. We're poor at both ends but still creating chances.
At a guess, we'll work on defence first. Can't keep letting goals in if we're barely able to score. Get a couple of clean sheets.

I even thought that our pressing today wasn't bad in the upper 3rd. It's just what followed after we won the ball there. Anyhow, its's not all doom and gloom. Take a look at our starting 11 & bench when we lost 0:5 a few monthes ago and do the same for today's game.

Poor Will Hughes. You could see he'd not been that far forward for a very long time, and despite facing the direction in which any left footed kick of the ball would take the ball where indeed it did actually go, he still decides to use his left foot, when the use of the right foot was the only solution to the position and angle he was in. I appreciate he appears to be making an effort to get into forward shooting positions, as is Wharton, most likely under instruction from Glasner. Maybe one will score and get the ball rolling.

I thought we managed Newcastle well for most of the game . They never looked like scoring in open play. We also created chances ourselves and Glasner changes tactics to give our midfield 2 extra support. Our problems in recent weeks began with our inability to take our chances, primarily because JP has been woeful and Sarr has been missing. Johnson may help but seemed scared to have a shot today rather than attempt a pass to Mateta.
In the last few games our defence has started leaking goals. That clearly reflects the players we are missing. As regards set pieces clubs, including ours , are adopting the Arsenal approach which makes man marking pretty near impossible. Zonal marking has always had issues with defenders waiting for the ball to come into their area. We don’t have a keeper who comes for the ball so we need central defenders who attack the ball. Richards is the best we have in that respect. Ollie said we miss Sarr at the front post. Today JP had that role. Enough said.

I am not sure that he has ever 'Lead the line' when playing in Spain.
My understanding is that he was deployed as a defensive midfielder at his previous club.
No, played as a CF, in Getafes 442 line up, Getafe a very small club, punching well above their weight, iconic manager.

Not concerned at the players you said starting against Macclesfield, it’s when the youngsters rather than first teamers are selected alongside them. We blew it against KUPS and that team would also lose against Macclesfield.

Love your optimism. Despite our recent form, my Villa fan mates are dreading that game 😆

No doubt they are basing that dread on the previous impressive score lines we have achieved against them in the last couple seasons - in almost each of those cases it was the speed & directness of Ismailia Sarr (often playing off JP knockdowns about 30 yards from goal) that broke them down, combined with the other RHS threat that is Danny Munoz & either one scored or the duracell bunny pace / direct running made gaps for others, this coming midweek game will be completely different & as much as I want a different outcome I can only see a Villa win on the cards.

A reality check-in now and again never hurt anyone. NUFC fans will confirm that after, like us, last season delivered silverware never seen by most (if not all) fans inside the Newcastle Arena watching today.

Anyone associated with CPFC will remember we are CURRENTLY enjoying the most favourable period for over 50 years.

My advice is to pour yourself a drink, keep the glass half full knowing that today is still one of those days over Christmas when you have to scratch your head to remember what day of the week is.

Finally let's all keep our recent successes never far from our thoughts either!

Edward Howe just said "Take nothing away from today's victory, especially with Palace being such a quality quality side" and his comments then being echoed by our own head coach saying "it was a good performance today, just without a result"

The words of these two managers are the ones that count after all.

Every quality side has a dense patch, so perhaps we have just had ours and will now push on and end the season with a top half finish, a major European trophy and another season in Europe next season which will us to continue to attract the quality players that we do.

We are Palace of London.
Up the Palace.
Well said , most people on here just look for negatives never spend time watching what else is going on in the game , to busy putting there head in there hands speaking to anyone that would listen to them so in all watch about 15 mins of the game ,

I dont hold to much on stats as they never give the complete picture , I done break down analysis for a multi billion pound company at one of there plants , you dont take everything at face value you watch all components , just the same as Glasners team do , and you try to come up with the best plan to improve , when machine keeps failing its not always the areas that were it breaks down ,

we brought in the summer that looked promising but have broken down , we took chances with Olise and Eze and got lucky both playing for teams bottom end of there tables at the time and had been rejected by others , then fans complain why havent we replaced them like for like get real ,

so my final analysis lets get all the buys in repair the broken ones and have all components available , then if its still failing then repeat the process may mean total replacements for some , minor adjustments for others , we are 5 games infront of west ham , bottom 4 look poor , one being forest and they spent millions in the summer , so deep breath we are still small fish taking on big fish and have done very well COYP
