Newcastle vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Reading Glasner's post match comments, I believe the players will be in for some hard core training this week lol

I listened to Glasners post match presser… for a couple minutes anyway.

I am concentrating on the present, so I’ve no interest in anything that has happened previously, but we’re losing in the same manner game after game and all OG does is point out the obvious issues.

His job is to fix these issues, not keep identifying them in the autopsy. Nothing changes if nothing changes so something has to change. What that will be I do not know.

Depressing period.

Having a hangover doesn't help.

Post match Glasner pointed out that in 5 of the last 6 defeats we have conceded goals from.set pieces which makes it difficult to win matches.
He said it's up to him and his staff to provide solutions, but at the same time pointed out the absence of what he called 'our best header of the ball ' Richards, Sarr, Munoz and Lerma who all have the physicality to defend set pieces.
I don't see the situation changing until we get some of these players back.
Clyne, Devenny, Johnson, Canvot etc will not provide the same level of aerial competition or physicality.

Agree with all of this, the only thing missing was his opening words of it being a good performance in his opinion.

Which, considering the amount of absentees we have, I agree with.

Important not to forget how far we have come, and that we aren't quite challenging for the Premier League title....yet.

We are keeping up with the likes of Leeds, Everton, Spurs & Bournemouth.... despite all of the handicaps we have

He can't do that- 2 full days before the next game!
Not excuses but the fixtures and also how they've fallen hasn't helped. Villa played a day before we did today, and we had a long trip up north.
Amazingly if Chelsea lose we will still be 3 points behind 6th. We can still have a good season in the league, and I'm hoping we sharpen up once the Conference League kicks back in.

It’s true he does try the flash stuff ,when simple passes are called for .

That’s up to OG or Guehi to have a word .

Dummies are for when you are 3 nil up not trying to get back into the game
I think even Lombardo would look crap in today’s game. Like Pino he used to try stuff and hope that his team mates ‘would get it’. Often they didn’t.

I am reminded of 'Humpty Dumpty' when I consider our descent down the table.
We are in 'Pitchy Seas'.

The challenge for OG is that there has been no time to plan or change anything outside of the next match. We have averaged a game every 3 days since November the 27th.

Touchwood once Villa is out of the way. They can get back to coaching, players will be back from injury and we can kick on, allowing players proper rest as needed.

If we were winning, it would be fine.
Honestly I’m not just talking about us, I usually watch a lot of games but I just can’t be arsed. I think my utter hate for Sky doesn’t help as they talk such utter bollocks and use partisan co comms on every game and just favour the big few. I can’t even be arsed with Match of the day.

I don’t think I helped because basically from the early kick off, a 3pm Kick off up until he evening kick off on Saturdays and the games on Sunday I might have over done it.

Is it just me or does anybody else have football fatigue? It’s seems like there is so much more on this year.

Agree with the notion that it would be more fun if we were winning however I do feel similarly.

I’m sure as the season draws to a close there’ll be plenty of drama to capture my attention however atm it feels like there’s more about 19 competitions running simultaneously, everybody bar us has a squad of about 50 players so I’m not even sure which player plays for who, and it’s hard to keep up with what is actually going on. Almost as if most matches seem to be of little significance.

It’s also s*** football to watch for some reason. I can’t put my finger on it but something has changed. I think back (probably with nostalgia and rose tinted specs) but the games were fierce and hard fought now it seems like an inevitable outcome every time. As you said most teams seem to have 3 full teams to pick from. I miss Viera v Keane and the like.

It has been a darned chore watching recent games, no win in our last 7, running on 'Empty' in the last 20 minutes.
The year 2025 has been heralded as one of our greatest, owing to the FA Cup victory, competing in Europe and the unbeaten run.Whilst of course I have shared the unbridled joy this has brought to our supporters, I also reflect on our record this season - Only 4 home wins in 14 games (All competitions) and only 2 Home wins in 10 PL games.

Yep and again agree that there seems to be a real dilution of everything within football I (and I’d assume others) loved.

You knew who the players were, you knew where the drama was (PL, FA Cup and Champions League for a few lucky teams) and you knew what the stakes were.

Now you have teams with so many players their personalities get diluted, playing in so many competitions it’s hard to identify which competitions are prioritised by which teams, and too many competing storylines to really keep track of events.

Overwhelmed to the point of exhaustion and disinterest.

They are really good points, well said. I also think VAR has had a massive impact plus refs… dear god the refs are awful. I’m not saying I want to see the likes of vinny jones clobbering good players but players now, you know a free kick is going to be given before the tackle is even made. The consistency is non existent too.

I absolutely love Glasner and hope he signs a new deal but he is not without his flaws.

It has become very apparent that the 3-5-2 system does not work without Munoz or a similarly attacking wing back. Mitchell has never been that and Clyne is past it.

Long term the system has proved that it works but, given our injuries, he needs to be more adaptable because at the moment we're basically playing 5 at the back. I feel like until Munoz comes back or we sign Boey, we should be playing 4-3-3 or something instead.

Our squad depth and the injuries are absolutely killing us. Today it was 0-0 and Newcastle were able to bring on Barnes, Ramsey and Livramento, before then adding Woltemade and Willock.

We brought on Devenny, Uche, Drakes-Thomas, Rodney and Esse. It's not really a fair fight.

Lets be clear, we're 4 points off fifth. This is not a disastrous season and if we suddenly string a few wins together we'll be right back in the mix again.

But we need new signings, existing players back in the side and a little more tactical flexibility. We also clearly need time on the training pitch to work on set pieces.

Get Villa out the way, play the reserve team against Macclesfield and let the players have a ten day break until Sunderland.

I'm surprised by so much negativity, although I understand it on the back of a defeat.
The game was reasonably even, but they took their chances, we didn't make the most out of ours.
I thought Wharton and Hughes did well in midfield and Mateta worked hard.
Lacroix, Guehi and Mitchell played to their usual decent standard .
More controversially I was pleased to see Pino more involved today, even if not much came off for him. He's busy and you can see he has a good football brain.
Whether he can cope with the physicality is another matter, but I think if you get him in the right areas and in space then he can create.

The real problem is the players replacing those injured/unavailable are not the same quailty.
This was always going to be an issue with a squad so lacking in depth of quality.
Friend of mine (Chelsea fan - he can’t help it) saw the game and his slant was similar to yours.
Most of us get obsessed with every Palace error and ignore the stuff that goes right.
So congratulations on being a rare fan who can be more objective than most. I thought we were sh1te.
