Loaned-Out Players

I’m pretty sure Carlo Cudicni was considered ‘small’ for a keeper but again Wikipedia tells me he’s 6ft1
 
Unless the keeper is ridiculously short he is always going to outreach strikers to catch the ball. Having said that so few keepers these days come off their line to do it that their height is irrelevant. Body strength and weight are perhaps more important given the tendency for teams to try to block off the keeper but again a big centre back wrestling with the strikers helps that.
Whitworth is a good shot stopper and in that regard his ability to get down to shots may reflect the fact he’s not a giant. He’s not afraid to come off his line for crosses (unlike Henderson) and his distribution is decent too. Most importantly the fact he is currently the best performing keeper in the football league shows he has what it takes to succeed.
 
I know it was a long time ago, but the shortest goalkeeper I can remember playing in the top division of English football was Laurie Sivell of Ipswich Town, who is 5 feet 8 inches tall

Les Green at Derby always looked shorter than that and Steve Death at Reading was too - not sure if he ever played in the top division though.

yes it was - 2-2, and we were 2-0 up if I recall, Tony Finnegan got them both did he. Hughton did some good reaction saves but got caught off his line in a way which only a stand-in could for one of their goals. He want on to sheer Gerry Ryan's leg in two v the weed. God we were awful back then, I think the crowd was either 4000 or 6000. Paul Cooper and Laurie Sivvel (?) I seem to remember were vertically challenged.

correction it was Steve or Terry Mahoney, Terry I think, it was 40 bleedin' years ago🤔
 
I might be 'Way off beam' but I believe it was George Wood who got injured and Henry Hughton donned the gloves. A great deal of water has passed under the bridge since those days and at my time of life the 'Memory bank' is far from in good working order.
