Loaned-Out Players

I think the reserves are missed a 50/50 selection of fringe players, players coming back from injuries and the pick of the young players, i spent many a happy afternoon at plough lane.

The reserves used to play the same teams and amount of games as the 1st team in the old football combination. I’m sure you’ll remember this Lanzo and we had tickets for all these games, all played at selhurst in our season ticket books. I went a few times, usually when we knew there was first teamers playing or if there was someone famous in the other team

I went a few times and in my memory Alan Pinkney scored every time. Wiki says he played for the first team 24 times over 5 years without a goal.

Indeed i do, simple times

No-ones kept more clean sheets in the division apparently 😎
I watched Joe Whitworth last season in the Premier League International Cup Final at Selhurst Park.
He looked fantastic. I'm not surprised he's doing so well in the Championship. I hope he makes it into the main squad next season. Kemi Badenoch always scares me when he plays.

We've started to name Remi Matthews after the Tory Leader? I believe they look somewhat different.

Joe Whitworth is playing for Exeter in League One.

He has received plaudits for his performances this season but he is not tall for a goalkeeper (Shy of 6ft), accordingly his stature might hinder his progress.
He is certainly adept with his feet and his shot-stopping is worthy of praise.
I wish him every success.

Well, he certainly knows how to jump, catch & punch a ball above attackers & his defenders, so no, I don't think his height is hindering him. Just my opinion.

His lack of height (reach) was the main factor with the goal he conceded at Brighton. He got fingertips to it but with the extra inches of a Sam Johnstone for instance he is saving that 9 times out of 10.
We were right behind it at the time and watching the highlights on tv confirmed our initial thoughts.

The fact Whitworth is a Palace fan makes me want him to succeed even more. He has a big character which is important for a keeper and he is, as others have said, very good with his feet.

Clearly height, or lack of it, is an issue for goalies, however, so few even dominate their 6 yard boxes these days i think it is less of an issue than it was. Palace have had a few England squad goalies over recent years (Butland, Sam and now Dean) and all were 6 ft 2 or taller. None of them dominated their area and Hendo in particular is repeatedly rooted to his line.

I remember Hennessey, who was tall was also not very dominant despite his height and from vulnerable to low shot close to his body as he was unable to get his feet/body moving quickly enough.

So there are clearly positives and negatives regarding height.

Pickford, the current England No1 is reported as 6 ft 1 but looks smaller and of course Speroni, one of the best goalies we've had in recent memory, was c 6ft which is regarded as small for a goalie.

If Whitworth is good enough he can have a decent career.

I stood next to Peter Shelton at an event once and remember thinking how short he was. According to Wiki he is 6 foot 0 but to me he didn’t seem it. Gordon Banks was also 6 foot 0 I believe. So, you don’t have to be huge to be a great keeper, or you didn’t in the olden days. Now keepers are expected to be 6 foot 2 or 3.

Actually being a great keeper is about anticipation, reflexes and quick foot movements, little steps before you launch, in my view. It would be lovely to think Whitworth has what it takes in spite of a lack of inches. I have no faith in our current 3rd choice and our 2nd choice is only on loan so there will be an opening next season.

He has grown since then, he is now, six foot, seven 😆
