Loaned-Out Players

I recall watching our team play at Port Vale in the early/mid 70s.

I believe we were defeated 2-1. I have a very vague memory of one of our players getting injured early in the game, possibly Tony Burns, but the encounter was in the 70s and my memory is fading with the passage of time !
I can't remember anything about Port Vale home or away and I'm not that old. They're likely imminently forgettable and I was probably drunk.
I seem to remember something about a 3-1 but that could be how many Port Vale lads attacked me back in the day. Or my ratio of rounds bought in comparison to my mates.

Just to add JRS is 22. If was going to make it at Premier League level he probably would have done so by now. We have seen players develop later but it is increasingly rare. I expect he will be a player who makes his career in the Championship or League 1
He would have established himself last season I believe had he not been injured. Roy had plans for him. It was a shame OG chose not to play him even though admitting he was amking a case in training.

We haven't played Port Vale for many years.
Mark Bright was at Port Vale before he was transferred to Leicester.

We didn’t play them at all during the 80’s, I know this because I had to check when it was I went there and realised it must have been the 90’s

I went to Stoke away several times when I lived in the Midlands. Not to be highly recommended.
I seem to remember going that area once and us losing by the odd goal, probably v Port Vale. In those days we had no goalies on the bench rather than two and Hammond(?) got injured so Cannon had to go between the sticks IIRC

Back in the late 60's / early seventies Stoke were a very attractive side to watch with the likes of Banks, Pejic, Dobing, Eastham and Jimmy Greenhoff featuring

This has jogged my fading memory. At the Port Vale game I attended (Over 40 years ago) I have a 'Feeling in my water' that Tony Burns received an injury early in the game and Jim Cannon donned the gloves.

My first Palace keeper, I just missed seeing Jacko live, apart from when he played against us for Orient

You missed a treat. On his day he was incredible. It's true we got a couple of clumpings but they'd have been worse and more frequent without him. He was a nice bloke too.

Probably on my list of palace regrets although regrets might be the wrong word, but I just missed out of seeing him and Don Roger’s in a palace shirt. I do remember the sadness, but good reception from older fans though when he(jacko) came back with Orient when I was a kid

"Stonewall" was signed by George Petchey. There were a few of our erstwhile players at L.Orient at the time, David Payne,Gerry Queen, Bill Roffey,Phil Hoadley etc.

One of my early heroes Barry Silkman ended up there as well. Also Shaun Brooks and Derek Possee

Yeah, it was Hammond that got injured and Cannon went in goal in his place.

In the game I attended at Port Vale I am convinced to a degree that Tony Burns was in goal.
I think that Burns was the main goalkeeper that season.
I suspect I have a programme somewhere in the archives.

Eight hours ago it was a ‘possibility’ and you only had ‘a very vague memory’ of it 😄
