Freedman

DF has done well, but there have been a fair few duds as well and i suspect we have an extensive scouting network so not sure how much credit (or criticism) DF can take.

The current strategy of getting the odd very talented lower league player and a few ambitious foreign players seems to be best approach for us, but it has taken a number of years for the club to get there.
Every club buys dud players. From time to time. DF did get lots of excellent players for a cheap price.

Personally, i have never liked the Arsenal castoffs that we have had. Young players on loan has worked much better than older journeymen on the way down the greasy pole.

I am sad to see DF leaving us, and lets try to be positive & optimistic for whatever new regime takes his place.

He's obviously fallen out with someone. But maybe this isn't too bad a time to lose him - it's not a transfer window and there's a couple of months to bed someone in.
Why would you say that? People move jobs all the time with no hard feelings. He may well have just had an offer that financially as well as culturally he believes is too good to turn down. He might have even given Parish the opportunity to keep him if he were willing to match the offer. None of this (unless either party reveals it down the road) will ever be known to us fans but it all sounds pretty amicable.

Stop getting your knickers in a twist. The guy has been with us for about 24 years. He has given us a longer service than anyone I know.

Let him try something new if that's what he wants. Wish him well and move on.
Yes, off and on for 24 years (Bolton debacle left a sour taste in most Palace fans' mouths). I am grateful for what he's done, but the move just makes no sense. He had the opportunity to go to Man U and Newcastle (presumably for more money) but turned it down to stay with us. For me, this move just shows lack of integrity and ambition. I get that money is a huge motivator, but this just seems odd (especially as things are going great for us at the mo). I feel like something has happened that we don't know about. Why wouldn't he make an agreement with the 2nd division Saudi lot and leave at the end of the season!? Anyways, bit peed off but as Palace fans we are used to the rollercoaster lol

He is leaving at the end of the season as he's acting as a 'consultant' till then. As for the PIF owned 2nd division club, who do they own in the UK?

Regarding the attractiveness of the club i think you are doing us a disservice. We are an established Premier League club and pay well. Outside the top 6 we offer players an opportunity to play and a platform to showcase their talents.

Any talented youngster should see Palace as an excellent club, if only as a stepping stone.

I remember Matt Jansen choosing Palace instead of Man U years ago as he felt he'd play more often.

The issue we have is getting players from bigger clubs. Not only will they be on massive salaries but they will see the move as a step down e.g. Tekkers and Sakho. Also, some of these players are overpriced and simply not as good when they play with 'lesser' players e.g. Nketiah.

I remember Steve Parish saying very recently in an interview that Dougie would be the first to acknowledge he has a fantastic team around him that identify, analyse and scout talent throughout the world. Freedman really is/was the front man that did the deal. As far as seeking out future talent is concerned I dont really believe Dougie Freedman leaving will have any major negative impact on our recruitment.
For a start I read only a week or so ago that the club have now formulated their targets for the summer window now that we have secured Premiership football for next season so even if Freedman leaving was a disaster we have until next January to fill his position.
I was angry when he walked the last time because he left the club in the lurch, knew he had and then there was all the rubbish he spouted about fearing for his/his families safety. This time I dont care. Not saying want him to leave nor am I saying I want him to stay. I think the media have massively exaggerated his influence on transfers at Palace by focusing on all the successes (Olise, Eze, Wharton, Munoz) and crediting all those signings to him while ignoring all the duds we have signed and there have been a few.

Good luck to the bloke. The club will be fine without him but you can bet the Troy Deeney's and the Chris Sutton's of this world that know nothing about Palace will be cast doom on our future performances now he is leaving which I find quite funny because we keep proving them wrong and making them look idiots.

Why I say it is that I find the timing quite sudden and strange. There were Man U rumours but this seems different. Just a feeling really.

Dougie's departure is a shock but what I have read about his new post in Saudi suggests it's a real move up - not just brandishing cheques for bigger sums like Newcastle or Man U might have offered but running a team of sporting directors across a range of different sports. There can't be many opportunities to take on a role like that; it might even be the only one. Like all our stars moving on to a higher level of paricipation than CPFC can offer we wish him well. If his new employers' faith in him is well placed then he will be leaving behind a competent effective team well versed in 'the Dougie Way' and while there's only one Dougie Freedman, we can reasonably hope to see recruitment, retention and management of the playing and coaching staff budget remaining one of the club's strengths - as indeed SP has said. I expect to see his replacement promoted from within the team rather than recuited from elsewhere. Having daid that, I admit a good window will be reassuring; at least he has allowed plenty of time for adjustment to doing without him for thst.

Let's not confuse DF the player with post playing model.

Good luck to him chasing the money, but let's not kid ourselves he has any special attachment to Palace, first ime to Bolton, now to Newcastle.

Expect Newcastle to try and get our better players in the summer

In the crazy football world, everyone is under contract. In the past, we have had some high profile contract breakers resulting in legal action, Bruce, Dowie and Pulis. No mention has been made of Freemans contract and any compensation, he has just left! Which seems a bit odd, as he has been an important part of where we are today and we just let him walk away.

He was working for free and out of the goodness of his own heart.

Just based on my experience at work... employing anyone is never an exact science, but as well as all the measurable things what you really want is someone who will bring their own personality, but at the same time get on with others and respect the organisation. In short no Prima Donnas.

Sounds easy, but it's not always that simple. Dougie, for me, deserves credit for the harmonious squad we have.

Well we don't know the terms in his contract. Which he only signed not too long ago.

And he hasn't just walked away, he is still providing consultancy services to Palace by way of a handover.

I'm as disappointed as the next man, but this is clearly a huge opportunity for Dougie.
