Freedman

This is my take on it too.

Not taking anything away from him, but Eze, Wharton, Olise etc weren't unknown talents. A watch of the championship highlights show would have alerted you to their abilities.

We're also done the hard work now with the rebuild. And to a man, all of our players hold some value, so we shouldn't need to worry about not having the money to replace any departures.

It also feels like there has been a bit of a shift in the league. 2/3 years ago it was only really Brighton who seamed to have a 'scouting' network that excelled. (e.g. Mitoma, Caicedo, MacAllister)

Now Bournemouth, Villa, Forrest, Fulham seam to all be getting recruitment right. Its not scouting in the purest sense, but a real good mix of players from the championship, prem and abroad.

As a result we are seeing a really competitive midfield (and teams like Spurs and Utd struggling)
Agree with all that Robbo. We also seem to have brought in players whose personalities fit in with the group. If there are any prima donnas we don't hear anything about them.

I feel to an extent some are downplaying Freedman's contribution e.g statements suggesting the likes of Olise, Eze and Guehi were obvious to all so it didn't take a genius to identify their potential.

Even if there was an element of truth to this the same certainly couldn't be said of the likes of Bolassie, Jedi, Ward, Murray and Delaney who were obtained at a pittance and provided the cornerstone of our promotion team.

Freedman was instrumental in getting us promoted to the Premier League and has played a significant role in keeping us there.
Whether one likes him or not as an individual is a different matter, but this shouldn't deflect from his achievements.

Hmm, I was there at Ashton Gate when Bolassie seemed to dribble the ball round every outfield player and Ward and Murray were also known entities.

But Delaney and Jedi! What football God was looking down on us when we signed those two? With one scraping out a career in Turkey and the other effectively giving up and en route back to Ireland? If that was largely Dougie, then an everlasting debt is owed.

A couple of days in now, and the only way this makes sense to me is that he had some 'gardening leave' agreement with the club prohibiting him moving to a PL team. So he's gotten around that by moving to a PIF owned Club in Dubai - which still allows him to have an influence on Newcastle's recruitment strategy.

I really hope I'm wrong, as that's rather unsavory and underhanded on his part.

Also as Manager Dikacoi. Murray, Ramage. Jedinak, Parr for 670k for all
Following year, Ward, Bolasie, Delaney, Bannon, Moritz and Gayle who we made a big profit on, not bad
Slightly strange list there.

Bannon and Gayle were signed after we got promoted when Holloway was in charge.

I liked Bannon, but he was never a fit at Palace. I believe we bought him for c£1.5m and gave him a free to Sheff Wed, where he still plays, a year later.

I would be surprised if that turns out to be true especially as Newcastle appointed Paul Mitchell as their DOF after Freedman turned them down; however, I do agree the whole scenario seems strange - maybe its just as simple as his head was turned by an enormous amount of money they presumably offered him.

I have no information as to the fee we paid A.Villa for his services.
Carlos Carvalhal signed him on a 'Free' for Sheff Wed.

Where he is going and why he is leaving aren’t particularly relevant - he’s not the first to have his head turned by Arab money and certainly won’t be the last. As when good managers or key players leave, It’s all about how we replace him and continue to have a good set up.

Dowie left to go up North, and Freedman's left not to go to Newcastle - just a coincidence he'll be working for their owners. Nothing to see here.
I'm wondering is the parting of ways when Parish said "where's our fee?".

10/11 (Jan 2, 2011) until 12/13 (Oct 23, 2012) was Freedmans manager time
Bannon was bought on the 2nd Sept 2013, for 2.1m euros, Freedman left 51 days later

Delaney was recommended by Curtis Fleming, Jedi was recommended by Tony Popovic, I cant remember who found Ward but it wasn't Freedman. A former Bristol City player recommended Bolassie (who I believe was where we signed him from) and Murray joined us on a free from Brighton when they at the time were drifting along going nowhere.
Not saying Freedman had no involvment in bringing in these players but he can in no way whatsoever take credit for finding them or signing them

Oh, good points.

That said, referring and assessing/contracting are 2 very different things. This site is full of people with great ideas of players but we sign appropriately none of them.

Freedman's main crime to those denigrating him seems to be that he's leaving the club.
It's brought about a reinvention of history with some seemingly willing to erase or minimise his contribution to the club.
I listen to a podcast involving a former coach at the club - who had his own run ins with Freedman - and yet he still acknowledges Freedman's brilliant eye for a player and his ability to sell the club to prospective purchases.
We have a playing squad now far in excess of the value the value when originally put together.
It's obviously not solely down to Freedman, but he has had a significant role as DOF .
Before his departure was announced I didn't see too many on here saying 'he'd be no loss' or 'what does he do anyway?'
Many seemed delighted that he had supposedly turned down overtures from Man United and Newcastle.
