Freedman

The rumoured negotiations for an OG contract extension and Dougie leaving are highly likely to be unrelated, but it did get me wondering whether there was any possibility that OG, wanted shot of him. Say, for example, because of his dissatisfaction at late in the window deals.

Obviously gone for the money. Going to what is the equivalent of a League 1 club in a country that … well let’s just say it isn’t for me.

His choice so good luck to him and thanks for some of the great signings

What are the odds that he ends up in Newcastle, as he wanted to last summer, via Saudi?

Wouldn't be surprised if he had some contract clause saying he could leave to go abroad or something so has had to go there first for a season or something.

Freedman has previous with leaving for more money, so we shouldn't be surprised.

Our signings haven't always been great. It's easier to remember the good ones.

We will find someone else.
People move jobs for more money and different opportunities, nothing new. Saying he has previous is churlish, everyone has moved job roles in life.

Disappointing news given the track record of good young Championship players and other signings he has identified and brought in in the last seven or so years.

Anecdotally you also hear about the positive effect he has on prospective signings in terms of making them feel wanted at the club. So this is a loss on several levels.

Hopefully the talent ID aspect of what he does is transferrable and we can build on what he leaves behind.

I think this is very possible. I think he may either want his own man or combine the roles to a certain extent so manager has bigger say in recruiting players

Shades of Dowie. He’ll be at Newcastle or Man Utd by the summer.
Personally I think he’s always been disloyal and was only just starting to forgive him for Bolton. Now I know he’s a t**t.

I can't see that being the case as he always speaks highly of him and if he did want shot of him it doesn't mean Dougie would suddenly jump at the chance of League 2 Saudi football. I'd say it's one of two things, he's getting ready to retire and wants a handsome paycheck or he'll be turning up at another higher profile post within a year.

All in all it just feels like a very underwhelming move. I've got huge respect for what he's helped build here but hopefully we've got a succession plan in place. Although the way it came out so suddenly without a sniff in the papers or online suggests it could have been quite spontaneous.

My 10p worth.

He kept us up once so for me got a bit of a pass. He’s uncovered some absolute gems but also a good few duds. I wish him luck. No way is he off to Saudi long term, he will serve out whatever penalty clause he has that stops him moving to another prem club and then he will be at a bigger club. Unfortunately I see him as a board room Zaha… best at our club. I have a feeling that at somewhere like manure or sandcastle, the amount that these unproven ‘gems’ and there agents want will be an issue when half turn out to be rubbish. A player we get for £18 million will be £45 million plus at these clubs and when they are a dud who will get the blame.

All can come and go, the one I worry about is OG. Whatever is going on you can only hope Parish and OG are on the same page.

Disappointed but not surprised. People are entitled to move on for more money or a new challenge. It isn’t the walking out he did previously for which he will always be tarnished.
In terms of successes versus failures he’s up on the deal. Olise Eze and Wharton will be unlikely to be surpassed as a trio in a small period of time.

There have been rumours about Freedman leaving for more than a year, with strong links to Manchester United, with whom he supposedly had discussions, and some other top clubs.
Nothing unusual in this; Freedman is perceived to have done a very good job with a particularly keen eye on emerging players of outstanding potential.
He’ going to be in demand.

The question for me is succession planning.
With these stories doing the rounds for so long, have we identified a successor?
It’s a key appointment, central to many aspects of the running of the club.
Iain Moody is being linked in some capacity, but he has neither the stature nor the track record to take on the full role.
Personally I don’t think Glasner should be a key player in identifying the new DOF.
Ideally you would want an appointment focused on the long term and independent of whoever the current manager is at the time, even if it’s important that they have a good working relationship.
Glasner is unlikely to be here long term in any event.

BBC Sport reckons he’s been offered a “Head of Sport” role in Saudi with a much wider remit than just football. They also say he will continue in a “consultancy role” at Palace until the summer and that while Moody will have more of a role at Palace he will not replace DF as Sporting Director. All very curious. Definitely something going on behind the scenes.
