Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal match thread

Just heard Glasner's take on the game
- we defended terribly, not marking or challenging for the goals
- for 60 mins it was one of our 'best performances ' in terms of creating
- you can't afford to give teams like Arsenal crumbs because 'they will take the whole cake.'

In fairness 5-1 was not a fair reflection of the game with perhaps 3-2 being more representative.
Not that it matters that much - a defeat is a defeat however it's dressed up.

Henderson has rightly had some good things said about his performances recently, a decent number of saves (albeit a number of them routine) made, which you expect goalkeepers to make, but he is not helping the defence by not attacking balls a few yards out. The 2nd today an example.

Sometimes you have got to hold your hands up and say the better team won, sadly it has happened twice in a week against the same side. We didn’t defend well on Wednesday or today and we need to learn from what happened especially on this afternoons showing.

Let’s move on and accept a lesson learnt….

At Bournemouth we should return to the Brighton formation and style, this is not the bundeslige.

Squad depth is bound to be a problem against Arsenal who can introduce top players at will.

We could have won this, on the basis of chances in the first half.

We had to man mark Jesus after mid-week that is obvious.

The Arse a bit flattered imo but the score speaks for itself.

The good work that we have done, to make the goals difference better than the other relegation teams, is in danger of being undone.

🤔

Only better as they took their chances, equal shots on target, we had more shots but are just s*** at converting. JPM 1 and sarr 2 should have scored these.
Need to be more composed it looks.

Shockingly bad all over the park.

Ended up.looking as attractive as a pint of flat lager.

Every player on the park and the coaching staff should hang their head in shame.

Need to be much better next game

It must be very difficult being Nketiah. JP always starts for his disruptive abilities and when it’s not working or tired or we are losing Nketiah is brought on to resolve the situation. By that time our best eleven is tired or been replaced with lesser players. He must be aching for the chance to be on at the start in his favoured position with our best players fully charged and ready to go. I hope for his sake one week that will happen and bring his self belief back.COYP

WTF do we have 3 players on the halfway line at corners. Yes 1 up to maintain a threat but keeping the goal mouth clear for a corner is suicide. As it was.
Its basic, you crowd the goal mouth even opposing players add to the crowding.
So the game was over at 3-1, 4 and 5 were just us chasing the game.

Even so with 30 something midfielders its always going to be a struggle.
2x Box to Box midfielders in the January window, thanks Parish.

Strange game, apart from the defending, we played quite well I thought. The difference was they put the ball in the net and we missed our chances.
Also strange, but I’ve come away from games a heck of a lot more disappointed than today, I’d sooner lose like that having a go than a lame performance where we don’t create anything and/or let in a last minute goal. Just one of those freak results today where I wasn’t expecting anything from the game anyway.
Happy Christmas everyone 😁🎅🎄

Posters saying the whole team were awful and Glasner was naive need to keep their toys in their pram. Richards and Clyne had poor games, we played some good positive stuff but just couldn't convert whereas they were clinical - the result flatters them 2-4 would have been a fairer reflection, but they are a very, very good side, we weren't generally poor but our defending was, Richards has been out for ages and was rusty and the solid back three was disrupted. One crumb they turned into a cake was when a slightly overhit pass went to Lerma in midfield so he couldn't kill the ball, it bounced about six inches from his foot on the halfway line and before he could take a second touch in a flash the ball was taken off him and they were bearing down on our goal. We were too open but we competed with them and were not unlucky to be 3-1 down but we matched them for much for the first hour and had several good chances to make it 2-3 - when it was 1-3 it did not reflect the balance of play, Hughes was very good, Guehi did some great stuff on the ball, we went from our keeper to make a chance at one point with about 30 passes and switching play - some of our possession play was excellent but they were incredibly sharp when a pass went slightly astray. The scoreline says more about how good Arsenal are not how bad we are - I can't believe how one bad result results in selective memory loss for the last six or seven games for some people. And we had three key players missing, two of whom will be back next game. I'm sure we'll come out sharper and fighting after this blip.

We’re not a bad side. We didn’t take our chances tonight and our defence had a poor evening. Olly felt having a go at them was the right option and it didn’t work out tonight. I agree we could do with a couple of signings in January and we need Wharton and Eze playing well again. I still think we finish around 10th 11th
A greed here with your pronouncement . We are not a bad FC at all and the only real disparity between "two footballing teams" on show this afternoon was that they toasted their goal attempts correctly.
Had we put our bread into the toaster the correct way round, and AFC missed the slots like we did...it couldv'e been 5-2 or 5-3 to us and no-one would be scratching their heads saying "how"

The only real albatross in the sky for us today was that it was the 8th (EIGHT) time in succession we have now been downed by AFC in all comps (EPL, F ACUP, LGE CUP, EUROPE, FRIENDSHIP MATCH)

I would like to wish everyone all the best of festive season. Stay safe and enjoy these magic moments and memories we all make with our families at this special time.

A good summary. You were watching the same game I was obviously.

That is incredibly condescending to criticise fans who quite rightly didn’t enjoy that performance. The defence was woeful today and we gave too many easy opportunities away. To wrap it up into a, well we did ok in some areas, just doesn’t sit well. We shipped 5 goals and you simply cannot sit back and applaud that as a satisfactory performance. We got annihilated and all we can really say is thank goodness there are worse teams to play this Christmas and hopefully we won’t play as poorly again.

Entertaining game today and the score flattered Arsenal to some extent. However, we made mistakes at the back and with two in midfield they easily passed around and through us. Under Hodgson we would have been tighter and lost 0:1 but that’s not Glasner. We need to set up differently when we play the top teams and put a third player into the middle of midfield. We just aren’t good enough to go toe to toe with teams like Arsenal. I’m fairly sure all or most the chances we had and missed today would have been put away by the Arsenal players. We just made too many mistakes and deserved to lose. Thought yet again Kamada was so poor and just can’t understand how he can make the first 11. Such a poor signing for us but still gets the nod in front of Deveney who gives much more to the team?

Disagree about singling out Richard’s. Thought the other two in the back three made just as many mistakes if not more than Richard’s. The set up today would have only worked if everyone had played tighter/together and didn’t consistently make errors. Arsenal were just too good but the way we played throughout the team today didn’t help one bit and that includes in front of goal. Let’s hope this doesn’t put us back to how we were before our recent run of form for the coming games?

The scoreline is embarrassing.
A disgraceful result on account of woeful defending and missing good chances.
Us poor supporters sat through that capitulation and I for one was steaming like a cooked clam.
I accept Arsenal are at a different level but to concede 5 in the manner that we did was totally unacceptable.

We have played 21 games in all competitions this season and have only kept 4 'Clean sheets'.

That was a tough one to take in terms of the scoreline.

More clinical finishing from Palace and although I still think we would have probably lost at least it would not have been by such a margin.

I was a little surprised by OG dropping Chalobah. Although his performances have been patchy, to throw a rusty Richards in against Arsenal was I thought a risk. And the back three certainly have had better days.

Ultimately there are some games in a season when quality tells and today was one of them. They clinically despatched their chances, we didn't. They were able to introduce a £100m sub. We brought on Jeff Schlupp.

I don't like to pick on individual players, but once again Kamada's impact on the game was minimal. If Palace do the necessary in the transfer market then it's hard to see him getting starting opportunities.

To end on a positive note, we created a good number of chances against one of the top teams in the country. It's a shame we couldn't finish more of them off.
