Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal match thread

The xG was 1.8 to 2.5 which sums up what most people on here say. We deserved to lose but it was a pretty close game. We have actually only had three higher xG's all season: so against Arsenal that was a good attacking effort considering the lack of creative players in the team. When was the last time we had none of Wharton, Eze, Olise or Zaha in the team?
Unfortunately xG statistics do not win us games or points its only goals scored that count and the fact is we were thumped yesterday. Our main problem is we just do not have enough EPL quality players to to make up the 16 players needed for every match. The bench is as important as the starting 11, this allows the manager to change things around when needed to alter the course of a game. our defence is also a big problem, cannot defend high balls coming in to the box and the number of goals we concede from high balls at the back post is a big concern as neither Guehi or Mitchell are capable of dealing with them as they both seem to panic at times, Mitchell also lacks awareness at what is going on around him thus often leaving players unmarked in dangerous positions. Since we lost Andersen, our passing from defence is a shambles, the defence make far too many passing mistakes and they are far too slow in getting the ball forward through midfield thus allowing the opposition to fall back and restrict forward progress. Yes we do have players injured, but so do other teams and it is what it is. Recently, the improved performances by Sarr upfront is a positive as is Hughes in midfield but as for the rest it just not good enough. Our only saving grace maybe that there are probably three worse teams than us in this league. The January transfer window is going to define our season.

I think health will define our season more than the transfer window. If Ebs and Wharton play regularly and the rest of the squad remain fit, we’ll be fine. It would also help if Muñoz and Hughes dial back their yellow cards.

That said, I’d be thrilled if we found a Muñoz 2.0 for LWB, but I don’t think it’s likely.

Saturday 1st November Palace 1 Arsenal 5

Yesterday brought back horrible memories of that occasion.

When 1969.

I was at this game,it reminded me of it yesterday as well.
Also during this season we lost to Chelsea twice at home by 4 or 5 goals. One game in the league and one in the cup in a short space of time. I was at both of those games too. And we still managed to stay up in the old first division for 4 seasons . Happy days

Correct, that season we finished 20th out of 22, only 21 and 22 position teams were relegated that year!

Neither they nor most of the team were match fit for Glasball due to lack of Summer rest and little or no pre-season. Fully match fit Eze and Wharton in a fully fit team should beat all those teams when we play them again.

The early games were very much a case of should have, would have, could have. Unfortunately the results say everything, the excuses given are simply that, excuses, probably valid, but excuses none the less.

The hope is of course that we will improve with fit players, but we have no idea when and if they will be fit. Wharton was supposed to be back by now but has yet another set back as has Eze who even when supposedly fit wasn’t playing that great. We then have a star in Doucoure who looks a pale reflection of his former self and a Brazilian who may never be fit. Add sumo Schlupp into the mix and where do I play Kamada and our squad looks as thin as thin can be.

I’m not trying to be sensationalist and I know your moniker sometimes reflects your feelings on the team but I’m a tad surprised you are so positive. I’m certainly not sure when or if our best team is going to be fully fit and available or if it will be at all this season.

I hope we have some players lined up for January otherwise we are a couple more injuries away from being back in a spot of bother.

The scoreline is embarrassing.
A disgraceful result on account of woeful defending and missing good chances.
Us poor supporters sat through that capitulation and I for one was steaming like a cooked clam.
I accept Arsenal are at a different level but to concede 5 in the manner that we did was totally unacceptable.

We have played 21 games in all competitions this season and have only kept 4 'Clean sheets'.
I do not agree that we capitulated, the score flattered Arsenal. They scored from almost every chance they created,on another day a couple of those shots would have ended in row Z.I do think we shouldn’t have gone toe to toe with them and been more conservative with our play as Everton did in their previous game.

First on MOTD. ZERO COMMENT about Palace. No reflection on what a good game we gave them for a long time. Didn’t even show the Hughes chance where he nearly caught Reya out in the highlights. Complete joke.

I'm sorry to disagree, Willo is absolutely correct, we were abysmal, our passing was poor, defending a disgrace. Our problems stem from a paper thin squad, our bench is either full of unfit player, academy players who have no EPL experience, or players past their sell by date. On some occasions we even have to select more than one GK on the bench just to make up the numbers. Unless we accept that what we have is not good enough it is not going to get better!

But do you think our players gave up?through in the towel? because I didn’t. We were out played though I admit.
No I don't think they gave but they were outplayed and to be frank some are just not good enough. as a life long Palace fan is grates on me when you consider how many season we have been in the EPL now and similar teams like Bournemouth, Brighton, Notts Forrest, Fulham and Brentford who have all be in the EPL for a shorter period have far better equipped squads for this league and are soaring above us. We have a paper thin squad and therefore not enough cover for the obvious injuries that all teams will experience sometime in a EPL season.

Just watched Liverpool thrash Spurs. Ange getting slaughtered by the studio pundits but Carragher just compared it to Palace v Arses and said the Palace game was in the balance for 60 minutes while Spurs were beaten after 5 minutes.
Having said that he then said the current Spurs side are a better side than Palace. Personally aside from Solanke and Spence I wouldn’t take any of their players over our first eleven.
