Crystal Palace v Fulham match thread

My final thoughts on today's soccer contest are such so I would personally appreciate every one of you taking the time to read my comment below and memorise my words so you can recall them if you feel down beat during the forthcoming mid-season break. And by doing so will ensure you all return, ready and primed for our next contest on the soccer field...

Every single bird in the world will find shelter during a storm, apart from the Eagle 🦅 which will always fly above it.

And so will our players today and forever.

Whilst today was complete shite I think some balance is needed. We were missing Eze, Wharton, Lerma, Riad, Franca, Hughes, Nketiah, Holding plus Doucoure and Richards obviously not fit to start. That's virtually an entire team including probably our three best players. Instead we had to player a youth player and a defender as midfield.

Fulham had one player missing. There's a very big difference there.

I think the club needs to question why season after season we do so awfully with injuries.

I thought we were outdone in every single department today.

Silva outfoxed Glasner. Their players looked to have greater capability than ours. We hardly won any contests. We didn’t look half a pace but several behind them at all times.

One plus was that Devenney looked as capable as anyone else out there though that may not be saying much.

JPM was in on goal as a result of sloppiness/luck, twice, in the opening minutes and didn’t even look likely to do something effective. That set the tone for everything else that followed.

An atrocious day out to the point I’m not even sure I’m bothered, wasn’t much to be bothered about today!

We created one chance, or had one attack of our making, in the first half. We looked all over the place tactically, had no idea how to get the ball forward let alone do anything with it, shot of confidence and emanated resignation from the first whistle.

Bad times.

That is very reasonable for today but not the whole season. We had many of those players available in other games and did no better.

The fact is we have 7 points from ten games. Keep that going and we will end up with 27 points and be relegated. We will always suffer injuries and suspensions. Hopefully not at the scale of today but some. We have to find a way of making it work and getting more points. If that means we need to change manager then so be it. It’s not all OG’s fault at all but we have to change something and unfortunately the manager is the obvious thing we can change right now.

Honestly, do you use recreational drugs? I’m sure your heart is in the right place but some of your posts are bizarre in the extreme.

Any early season optimism has well and truly been washed away. Another season down amongst the dead men, beckons already, dropping significant points against Forest, Leicester, Brentford, Wolves & Fulham, all teams against which we should be competing with/beating and especially after a lot more seasons at the top table than them all and with all the incumbent riches.
It’s difficult to see how much more time OG will be given. Whilst the injuries are unfortunate and aside with his fixation with playing Kamada, one of the worst players l have seen in 50 years’ supporting the Palace, l do feel some sympathy with him. In the Summer transfer window it was a change to see a player, in Olise sold for a significant figure & that was unfortunate but was always going to happen. However, it was in hindsight not a great window again.
Selling Anderson & Ayew so close to the start of the season were poor decisions. Ayew was good business, but if it was going to happen it should have been covered earlier.
Sadly, we have been left with Henderson, who whilst, he did make saves today, albeit fairly routine, always has a soft goal in him. Whitworth (another outgoing during our over use of the loan market) went to Exeter & we re-signed Matthews & took Turner on loan. Further use of the loan market left us with 1 striker & Nketiah who certainly hasn’t pulled up any trees yet. Lacroix, Chalobah & Riad (sadly injured) look decent signings unlike Sarr & Kamada.
Yet we had money left which wasn’t used & with the current crop of injuries has left us very thin. And let’s be honest, we do get more than our fair share.
It was refreshing to see Devenny get a debut today but the much-vaunted Academy which didnt provide too many players in the Championship, surely now contains younger players who would contribute more currently than Sarr & Kamada !!
And also, a player like Mateta, a player we need at his optimum currently, could do with putting proper shifts in rather than geeing the crowd up ! They respond to his efforts & the teams !

I'm actually not that upset as most of the people on this thread.

As people rightly stated on the prediction thread, we were fielding a much depleted squad, while Fulham had only one player on the injury list. They were the heavy favourites going in.

I was happy for Devenny. He looked better than I would have thought. Definitely a first team sub when Wharton is back. Made a few errant passes, but also some promising ones. Midfield is the hardest position to slot into, and I was impressed with his quality today.

We had our chances today against a team with much more first teamers than we have. The fact that they can bring Traore and Wilson off the bench, when we have Schlupp is a testament to the better quality today. However, I think if we only had one first team player out (vs 4), we would have been much better.

Kamada, as others have said, is just not good enough. How many other first team midfielders give the ball away as much as him. We've given him way too much time to prove himself. A bench warmer at best. I think we'll play much better without him (and hopefully OG sees that and doesn't play him ever again).

Schlupp is also awful. He bought himself another season with that late goal last season, but no way we should have signed him to another year.

I thought Mateta played well today, gave it his all and won a few duels he shouldn't have. So close to heading in that goal. No reason to slate him today.

Lacroix just made a terrible error. Sat on the ball for way too long. Up to that point I thought he was terrific and 2nd half the same. Just a slip, and hopefully it doesn't happen again.

I'm still optimistic. We haven't played Ipswich or Southampton. Wolves (who apparently looked good today) we played away and tied. So home game left for them and Everton. We've taken points from all three of the "big 6" we've played this year. Hopefully getting Wharton and Eze back soon. I'm confident we'll be fine.

Why isn’t Saar played wide on the right. So he. Can use his pace and put crosses in. It’s all he is good at and yet we play him down the middle or out left . And how can schlupp be given minutes when he is obviously overweight unfit and of zero use. On the bright side I thought Devaney showed composure and promise considering the shitstorm around him….and apart from chronic mistake that cost us a goal Lecroix had another excellent game . OG changes at half time just made things worse. Kamada is a mistake that needs to be recognised and addressed after his ban completes (loan/saudi at Xmas window?) hoping we have some joy with returning key players soon…Wharton,Eze,dacoure,Richards, and that signings riad, nketiah n Saar n chalobah start to play towards expectation levels Somehow I still don’t think we are one of 3 worse teams in league but that’s surely not enough for this group of players

People won't accept that Lacroix is a big downgrade on Andersen so they'll delude themselves into thinking he was "amazing today except for the goals." He was absolutely terrible
Lecroix doesn’t ping the ball around and start attacks the way quarter back Andersen does but he’s improving and is a much more solid and quick defensive centre half than joa from what I have seen. And he’s young and can improve

Obviously the error for the first goal was a shocker but Lacroix has great pace and used it to make a goal saving tackle in the first half, just one example from today of what a very useful player he is.

We are without a lot of players and it was always going to be a tough one.
However, Glasner got today horribly wrong.
He played players out of position for no reason and it showed.
Sarr on the left not the right, clyne on the left not the right, Devennny should be left side.
Kamada - gosh - he is just not up to football at this level.
He had to play him today but to see him left on the field when others went off was pretty poor.
It could have been 5-0 in all honesty.
Injuries aside, I reckon he has two more games and he could be gone.
A shame if so but we are currently on target for 25 points which means relegation.
Guehi will be gone in January and Eze may want out as well.
It is all going horribly wrong sadly.

He hasnt had the best start, but Tom Soares was worse and Dowie played him every week.

Lacroix and Andersen both have different strengths that’s for sure. But we don’t really need to argue one over the other.

What makes zero sense is having a panic loanee yet again at centre back when we could have a settled back 3 of Andersen pinging all our attacks, Guéhi and Lacroix with his recovery pace and tackle.

It’s like all our signings. Nothing against Chalobah as a decent loanee but not over Andersen. Nketiah over Edouard is an upgrade, Kamada over and ageing Ayew…ah you can just about swing it if maybe Kamada was only a sub and had more confidence. The problem is, they certainly aren’t Olisse and Mateta replacements!

Is Nketiah actually an upgrade on Edouard? Looks to me like he is equally ineffective. While he runs around a lot he doesn’t get in goal scoring positions, doesn’t hold the ball up, doesn’t link play and can’t press. He has no goals and no assists in the League.

‘Every single bird in the world will find shelter during a storm, apart from the Eagle 🦅 which will always fly above it.’

I am not sure this is ornithologically correct - in fact, I think it’s totally wrong.

To be fair, the absentee list meant this was always going to be a big ask. It was a strange, largely forgettable game mainly dictated by defenve errors and a red card. In many ways that should worry Marco Silva more than us if some of our errors hadn't been quite so inexplicably crass. Things should look up as players return aftet the break although the fixture list then is on the harsh side. Maybe today is best remembered for an Academy signing from Scotland looking quite likely to come good and a second hopeful looking cameo from Agbinone.

Agree with much of this.
It looked to me as if the plan to play Sarr on the left was motivated by Anderson's lack of pace on the right of Fulham's back 4.
Sarr failed to exploit this in any way.
In fact it was Mateta who managed to get in behind Anderson twice in the first half but nothing came from the situations.
Sarr showed a marked reluctance to take on players throughout and was ineffectual
