Crystal Palace v Everton Match Thread

Why ? It's what you predicted.........it's what you always predict.
I predicted that we would not emerge with a victory, and in my mind I thought the result might be 0-0 or 1-1. To lose yet another Home game after missing 1st half chances and providing Everton with an opening goal in such a fashion really grated. A long journey to witness another defeat had me 'Spitting feathers' and my poor wife took the brunt of my wrath.😡😡

when we scored i felt that the var jokers were doing every thing to get the goal ruled offside even you could see there was nothing wrong with it, and as for the goal from the corner well errr ,just watched motd my god what a bunch of c***s !!!

Personally I'm just fed up with VAR. Full stop. Yes the goal was given, in the end, but the whole joy was lost, as it often is. Moreover the length of the delay deprived us of any impetus after scoring. It had gone flat for the players.
What's the difference walking away moaning about the ref or VAR. I think its an appeasement to the TV audience.

We are 12th, it's where we were at this stage of the season under PV and for the most part under Roy. It's our average. Despite OG offering a slightly different playing system we haven't really progressed. Steve Parish in the recent interview stressed the importance of remaining in the EPL, i get the impression he's content with a 12th place finish.
I like what OG is trying to do although his allegiance to the woeful Kamada is starting to grate. If Kamada had any redeeming quality it should have been evident by now, but overall there's been nothing to write home about.
Cracking the home form nut is where we'll see an improvement, however the home form was just as erratic under previous managers. We have a problem with teams that sit deep yet have some counterattacking ability, it's something for OG to think about, winning consistently at home is the only way to see an improvement in our final position.
Forever 12th. We should be grateful - who said that?

Perhaps it's our destiny to be the perennial nearly men.

As a long term fan, I witnessed the Team of the Eighties crammed full of our excellent youth players which a brief flirtation with the top of the table before falling away with only a couple of the players really fulfilling that outstanding potential.

I saw Coppell's team which finished 3rd only to be denied Europe by the ban affecting English clubs at the time.
That team fell apart too.

I was at the two Cup Finals when we led on both occasions with minutes remaining, only to eventually return home empty handed.

Note what happened yesterday.
Everton had an exhausting game midweek and were without many players.
On the other hand, we had a clear week with our top players returning.
Many on here were forecasting a victory by a few goals and were acclaiming the strength of our team and bench.
Somehow we still managed to find a way of losing.

South London and Proud?
Well yes...but it would be nice to have a tilt at Europe or a piece of silverware to go with it at least once in my lifetime.
Even the likes of Wigan, Oxford,QPR, Southampton, WBA and Leicester have had some silverware in their cabinets.

The mistake of the linesman reminded me of the ref error at Brentford game, simply not good enough for paid officials. I guess all teams have similar during the years but these two errors 100% cost points.

I would also note IMO the megaphone song leader in the Holmesdale sounds really phoney and contrived, much better before that started.

Very flat atmosphere for most of the game, one to forget and move on.

Has this been confirmed as a "Mistake of the linesman" ? Someone who witnessed the game on television opined to me that he believed the ball went out of play, another told me he wasn't sure at all.
According to VAR there was no conclusive evidence, hence the on-field decision stood.

Nowt wrong with VAR - just the idiots who struggle to interpret what they see.
There’s pretty much EVERYTHING wrong with VAR.

The time it took them to try and give Mateta’s goal offside was ridiculous and the whole system is killing the game and taking away the euphoria of scoring a goal. Mateta looked to be onside yet they studied two camera angles for around 4 minutes, neither of which were in line or gave any CLEAR definitive answer. Drawing the lines from those two angles would have been pure guess work and on one freeze frame the ball had already left the passers foot!

There is now little point in celebrating a goal because VAR looks through the build up to try and find an infringement or earlier offside. It has also become an unfortunate side effect for every time a goal is scored, the opposing team surround the referee in order to influence them to disallow it.

The flow of the FA Cup games was SO much better. Yes the Maguire goal v Leicester was offside but we still get loads of ridiculous errors and wrong decisions WITH VAR so what is the point?! Semi automated offsides may help but I’m not convinced, although the current method of delaying putting the flag up is just s*** and another factor contributing to killing the spontaneous excitement of watching the game.

I also feel the style of officiating a game has changed dramatically and the standards have dropped as a result. Officials now don’t seem as sharp and aren’t giving decisions - relying on the VAR system to basically re-referee the whole game alongside them and correct any errors.

I much prefer watching games without VAR as the whole flow is there and you know you can celebrate a goal if the referee points to the centre circle. I genuinely feel that VAR is unwittingly making the game too clinical and sterile, affecting the atmosphere in stadiums and ruining the enjoyment of the game. It has not eradicated the mistakes and the subjective nonsense we see week in week out is just pathetic. I would rather us go back to refereeing games without VAR, keeping goal line technology only…just accepting the rough with the smooth and having the excitement back.

The expectation that we will win every game is always evident in match day threads, in reality its not going to happen and we lose games, all teams do. It was a good game to watch, a lot of end to end open play, it could of gone either way, but didnt work out for us. Everton are vastly improved under Moyes, he has got Beto playing like Mateta a real handful, just shows how crap Dyche is.

We lost the game because of our errors starting with Mitchell and ending with our inability continually being poor at defending the back post when high balls come in to the box. The latter coupled with our poor passing, giving the ball away too easily, lack of ideas in the final third and our continued inability to convert chances when we get them. The decision with the corner and our disallowed goal was unfortunate but correct, as there was no conclusive evidence from the camera angle VAR had and therfore they had no choice but to defer to the on field decision. As for VAR, personally I prefer to have it in the game as it does eliminate on field errors more often getting it right rather than wrong!

Having had time to reflect on the game, I have to say it was truly awful.

In many ways that is our worst loss of the season against a much weakened Everton side.

Glasner has serious work to do on our home form.

Winning 2 out of 13 at home is shocking form and it is totally reasonable for fans to expect more.

Everton are a horrible club. Horrible whingeing fans, look what happened with that pitch invasion. Like their scouse neighbours they put pressure on officials who know what abuse is coming their way if they give a decision against them. They’ve had a run of poor seasons but it’s ten games since we beat them. Ten. Definitely our bogey team. Physicality probably something to do with it. Can’t stand them. At least they’re out of the cup.

100% agree with this. Their fans are worst type of horrible northern scallys. I put them in the same bracket as millwall and Cardiff.
