Crystal Palace v Everton Match Thread

To Patrick A,
We are never going to make any forward progress on the field under Mr Parish. It’s all treading water and hoping each season that there are 3 worse teams - more likely to go backwards.

100% agree with this. Their fans are worst type of horrible northern scallys. I put them in the same bracket as millwall and Cardiff.
The same as their red neighbours. It was funny in the 80's when no one questioned how fans from one of the most economically deprived cities in the country could afford to travel around Europe to watch football matches. The fact they were dodging fares, using stolen credit cards, robbing people and going on massive shop lifting binges while there was just glossed over.

Whether the ball out or not (and if it was then outswinging corners are likely to become even rarer than they are now) it was a very good header.

I would have thought that typically the goalkeeper (Pickford) would have been most closely watching the flight of the ball, if anyone was going to appeal (that the ball had gone out of play) whilst the ball was still on its trajectory it would have been him -

The mistake of the linesman reminded me of the ref error at Brentford game, simply not good enough for paid officials. I guess all teams have similar during the years but these two errors 100% cost points.

I would also note IMO the megaphone song leader in the Holmesdale sounds really phoney and contrived, much better before that started.

Very flat atmosphere for most of the game, one to forget and move on.
The flag was not raised until the goal went in so he waited to see what happened before flagging which is totally wrong in this situation

Standing on the far side of the pitch, and at an angle to the flight of the ball, there's no way he could have been 100% certain that the ball went out of play. It isn't possible to watch the ball and the line at the same time, especially trying to track both during the very brief time from the corner kick to the headed goal. Also from his angle the ball in flight would have been obscured by the fans behind, he would have been looking up at the ball and not the line. So for him, it was just guesswork, an intuition that helped his other favourite scouse team escape a perfectly good goal.

The VAR delay was ridiculous. It appeared they were looking for reasons not to give it. Surely there should be a 60 or 90 sec cut-off and if VAR can’t make a decision within that time it goes back to the on-field decision.

The disallowed goal reminded me of the ref blowing too early when Eze scored. Why don’t these guys just wait. It’s as if they’ve got a nervous tick or unconscious bias creeping in.

In this case it should have been goal given with VAR still able to look at it. They keep getting it wrong. Very frustrating. Moan over.

I couldn’t bear to watch MOTD last night. What did they say about the disallowed goal?

Went to the game and just looking through the events this morning. The Lerma goal is a shocking decision. The linesman couldn’t have possibly seen and reacted to 2 Everton players putting their hands up. Don’t seem to be getting much luck in home games at the moment.

I take it from the comments made that VAR does not extend to the lines at the ends of the pitch otherwise there would have surely been a conclusive outcome to whether the ball went out or was in.

The linesman, with this knowledge in mind must therefore be 100% sure the ball went out and if he is 100% sure then why didn’t he put the flag up straight away. It is not a linesman’s job as far as I know to ignore a ball going out of play because he doesn’t think it will impact the game, until it err, impacts the game. I’m pretty sure however, if Everton ran straight up the other end and scored he wouldn’t have put his flag up at all.

Winning 2 out of 13 at home is shocking form and it is totally reasonable for fans to expect more.
It’s certainly relegation form. Let’s hope the away form continues as after yesterday I’m not seeing a win at Fulham and that away form ending. Nor the next one home to Villa. We could be stuck on 30 points for a while looking at upcoming fixtures. Or perhaps as I’m a home supporter only it’s just getting me down :-(

I thought exactly the same. The footage shows him looking around the corner flag to check, so why doesn't he flag straight away. If he had it would make it easier to take. This was one of the many frustrating things about yesterdays performance.

Never mind. Dermot Gallagher will clear it all up on Ref Watch where he's guaranteed to confirm it was all an error and apologise on behalf of his fellow officials.

I watched in my local with no sound so am not affected by commentators' waffle - I thought in terms of attacking play and taking the game to the oppo it was one of our best performances this season - one touch link play with tricks, flicks, dummies ands movement to open them up, whilst keeping the ball!. Luck played it's part - Lerma's goal should clearly have stood then Mitchell has a mindless moment and we're 1-0 down when we should have been two up. Our response after the break was brilliant and I'm not the only one who thought we'd roll them over after that. But they defend and break well and always carried a threat, but their winner came from an over hit cross and two lucky deflections. That was the old Eze again - he played with intensity, and the boy can beat players because as Malcolm Allison once wrote in Shoot magazine, beating players is more about body control than ball control and the way he jinked between their players to set up attacks was top drawer. I think the comments about Wharton not being up to speed are unfair too, not just the long pass to Chilwell, but his first touch passes to start moves off and one pass/tackle/interception he made, when they were trying to break, turned defence into attack in an instant (second half 10 yard pass into space down the main stand wing while he had his back to goal). Despite the defeat it's starting to come together again to my eyes, we can keep going in the league, we're probably safe now, maybe two more wins, top half is our best outcome, so lets go out and win the FA Cup - never get a better chance. COYP 🙂

We had some bad luck and the VAR delay was inexcusable but lets face it we did not play well
.
I thought Munoz was very poor, Mitchell was innocuous until his grave mistake, but maybe he was semi-concussed? His throw-ins have never been productive, one of his weaknesses. The back three were found wanting for a change and did not produce anything productive. Our heading ability is very, very poor. Wharton will improve and will be our best asset. Hughes was his usual combative self but produced little going forward. Lerma was just about OK and his disallowed header was terrific. Sarr ran around as usual but Mateta chased on scraps. Trouble is he has one over-riding weakness - he is very poor in the air. Eze shows he is creative and unpredictable, even to his own comrades. Strange when we needed a goal we brought on Ntekia and Kamada when Esse might have provided something different in place of the humped balls into their penalty area which were fruitless against accomplished defenders including O'Brien (didn't he once belong go us?)
Overall we lack a leader on the field. Guehi is a great player but does not fulfil this role adequately.

In short when Eze and Wharton are match fit we can feel more confident and will have the creative back-up of Esse and Franca when both are up to Premier League speed. What Kamada lends to the team it is difficult to fathom. He may have been competent abroad but is showing precious little talent with us.

Whether the ball out or not (and if it was then outswinging corners are likely to become even rarer than they are now) it was a very good header.

How about changing the rules for corners, that it is irrelevant if the ball goes out from the direct corner kick until it makes contact with a player or the pitch.
Anything to make the game more exciting and free er flowing.
With VAR etc. we are in danger odf the game seizing up for live action. Yesterday the delay by VAR for our goal was a complete farce.I got cold just waiting.

Once Guehi Chilwell and Eze build up an understanding, they will be brilliant. I saw the start of it yesterday. Eze is happy to pass to Chilwell which he rarely does for Mitchell.

We dominated Everton throughout. Moved the ball well at time. Victims of bad var decision. Missed a couple of golden chances. One-off calamity first goal given away ( Lerma and probably Munoz share blame w mitchell ). Wharton adds a lot but still match rusty. Eze looked back towards his best. Chilwell will raise our level when he is fit and picked. Still in the cup. Safe from relegation. Look capable of competing with any team we play. Yesterday was a disappointing result. Prospects for rest of season are encouraging. With Franca and Esse still to come. COYP,! In OG I trust (kamada blindspot notwithstanding)

Why not? Better than IFAB coming up with another of their brilliant innovations like touchline sensors or line judges like tennis. Or Star Trek style force fields being set up.
Since corners can be taken with barely anything "overhanging" the line it must have been well over for the linesman to be so sure.

This is true. Just our luck, though, that Chilwell isn't our player and signing him is unlikely. He can make a big difference then go back to Chelsea and be sold for someone else to get the benefit and we're essentially back where we started. Still, let's make the most of the time he's here.

Do away with calling balls out in the air from anywhere, there are enough stoppages in the game already . If the ball lands or is headed inside the confines of the pitch the game should carry on.
