Crystal Palace v Everton Match Thread

Serious question…

Why are we so bad at home and fine on our travels?

Is it because we have to show more attacking intent at Selhurst and teams then sit back? It’s not like we are not creating chances.
Glasner is a very methodical coach and must see that the set-up, which works well away from home, does not appear to suit us at home when the opposition sits deeper.
With him being thorough and methodical I'm surprised that the only approach we have when falling behind at home is to throw all our forwards on and hope something falls for us.
We create very little with this approach and it's easy to defend for teams like Everton.
Everything went through the middle with players getting in each other's way.
Try and get down the sides and pull the opposition out of position and create space for our forwards.
Perhaps that was the intention, but there was no evidence of that.

Everton exposed our weaknesses. Lumping up to the box waste of time - they can head a ball and we can't. Might have been better starting Wharton, Eze and Chilwell. But, blimey, what does the manager see in Kamada? Overpaid and a waste of time.
More skill on the ball and we'd be OK but the Selhurst jinx strikes again.

Their tactic in 2nd half was to play it to Beto who'd come short meaning Lacroix followed him and then Guehi tucked in the middle which left Mitchell exposed and Lundstum to exploit this. They did it time after time. Moyes got one over on OG for the first time.

Far from being an acceptable performance but it was fine margins in this one ;

Sarr should have put us 1-0 up
Mitchell’s bizarre throw in cost us a goal
Eze and Wharton improved things but are still not 100% firing on all cylinders

Mitchell played like he’s spooked by Chilwells arrival. And too often our defenders cleared our lines but only hit Everton midfield players.

Plenty of room for improvement.

That was back to the frustrating miseries of the early part of the season where we contrived to lose a game due to a couple of abject defensive lash-ups despite overall appearing the better side. We've been fairly free of those for a while. Mitchell, I've noticed, has several detractors on these message boards; I am decidedly not among them but even I'd admit he was ghastly today. Noticing several others - particularly his partner in crime Lerma and Richards - seemed well off their best form and that Sarr was unavailable on Monday due to a virus, I'm wondering if an explanation might lie along those lines. I'm hoping so.

East Anglian Eagle here (locked out of that account for some reason)...

It may well be just me, but does anybody else feel like Mitchell has buckled as soon as he has competition for his place. has never had any competition since he broke through and the minute Chilwell turns up he throws and absolute shocker? I may be a bit harsh and am calling him out for a one off bad game that coincides with this but hard to see past this for me.

frustrating game where we, as always, bottle it against a team of shithouses. Can't finish our dinner, another frustrating VAR call against us, silly errors and a naff atmosphere once again.

Yes i am Salty.

I agree about the apparent effect on Mitchell of Chilwell's arrival.
It may seem simplistic to draw such a conclusion, but that was a very uncharacteristic performance from him .
Competition may be motivation for some players, but others may feel diminished especially when pitched against players of high quailty.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out in forthcoming games.

Everton sit deep? they pressed with 4 players on the edge of our box, as we tried to get out, eventually we just lumped it forwards to Mateta on his own with 2 CBs on him.

BBC showing Palace had and XG of 1.5 while Everton had 0.75. You can’t blame Glsaner’s tactics or our home form for this. We played well but didn’t take our chances (and weren’t awarded a goal we did score) and gave away a stupid goal because of a very sloppy error. This is on the players.

Completely agree. he does have moments of 'what are you thinking, don't pass there' etc. but today was a strange one from him. Hopefully a one off and he is back firing next game when marking Adama Traore (crosses fingers and hopes he doesn't find his end product vs us)

Hmm odd game. We should have scored a couple in the first half, then gifted them a goal.

Got back on level terms at the start of the second but couldn't score again in that 50-65 minute period.

Everton were big, physical and direct. A lot of the game was in the air which suited them.

A game of missed chances again.

Oh and I would give the ref a shout out too. Apart from not booking an Everton player (any of half the team) in the first half, I thought he had a good game, but was let down by VAR and the linesman.

Oh and the guttering where I sit is still bust!

Oh and two highlights from me to cheer us up:

Chris Richards slaloming past Everton defenders (I think he was just trying to control the ball but it kept running away from him and he just kept toeing it)

When Lacroix came off Chilwell spent about 2 mins holding up 4 fingers and shouting at his fellow defenders all of whom seemed to be in a state of complete incomprehension.

I agree with you today. I think we did more than enough to win. However, we can’t ignore the home record overall this season. That suggests that something isn’t right in the way OG is setting us up at home.

Surely one of the coaches needs to see in training if Mitchell can actually cross a ball near a targets head or foot or as we suspect has no touch or feel for the ball and just blindly puts his foot through it. That I suspect my friends is one of our problems. Sure, he’ll luck out and find someone sometimes but does he have a ‘real time’ appreciation for the danger areas in a fluid game and feel his strikers runs? Absolutely not. Watch him when he crosses..he rarely glances up and just swings a leg with his fingers crossed.

I like him as a pure defender but he shouldn’t be let loose anywhere near an attacking position.

That throw in he did leading to their goal was just a chaos moment which we’ve all had so I don’t actually blame him for that.

I thought we looked good for large parts of the first half with some nice passing moves and Hughes bossing midfield then with the subs on in the second we started trying to play through them more and Hughes dropped deeper and deeper.
Chilwell is settling in nicely.
The ref didn't help either by not dishing out a couple of cards earlier to make them think before constantly grabbing and grappling to stop attacks.
Still not getting Kamada. What was his contribution? One overhit ball out to Munoz and he got badly caught in pocession which nearly set them up. If he's got to play it should be up the pitch - we need someone close to JPM to pick up his lay offs so it might as well be him but I'd have rather seen Esse come on.
