Unless you happen to have seen him play, of course. In which case those doubts may linger.
Just on performances alone, and setting aside cost/value etc, my view is that he was initially used as a No10 but was hopeless. Then, rather than being dropped, he was relocated to centre mid where he was just about OK. He had some of his better games in the latter stages of the cup run last season but was, in my view, fortunate to start the cup final ahead of Hughes or Lerma. He did play well on the day, though. Since he came back from injury earlier this calendar year he has been in the best form I have seen from him, though overall I would put his performance level as 'average' over his whole time with us, whilst noting a welcome improvement in the last few months.
Part of me thinks that he has slowly gotten used to the English game, hence the upturn in recent form (albeit mostly he has had his best games in Europe). I would be happy for him to stay, even on those wages, if he kept the same level up for another year or two. He still wouldn't be a star, though.
The other part of me thinks that he has got his finger out a bit now because he is in the shop window again for his next move, and doubts whether he would play as well next season if he got a new deal with us. I thought he was one of the best players on the pitch at home to Fiorentina in the quarterfinals, but that level of performance stands out for its rarity and, perhaps, for its timing.
I don't really get this thing where if you don't rate a player you are a 'hater'. I want all Palace players to do well. I thought Kamada played well last night, but not for statistical reasons. I mean, if our keeper let that shot beat him we would be concerned, and the pass he played to Larsen came about after one of theirs had slipped over rather than because Kamada had beaten him. Kamada scored and assisted, but there is always a story behind the stats. My praise for his performance comes from what I saw, not what I counted. I am happy to give him his dues, but the idea that stats alone can prove the point has been done to death on here.
Unless, of course, there is a stat for how often a player blows a pretty good chance to help his team get a goal on the break by shitting himself to an almost comical extent at the mere prospect of bumping into a goalkeeper. In which case, the stats may have a point!
