It may be a sweeping generalisation but Japanese people do tend to be respectful and modest.

When I was working in London during my younger days; I had to visit a potential Japanese client.

My boss had told me about how the Japanese love to exchange business cards - also he told me to bow instead of shaking hands.

I did all the said cultural things correctly, except at the end of the meeting, one of the younger Japanese guys decides to shake my hand as I was bowing. Lol.
