Kamada

The BBC has a neat feature on its game report page; click on "line ups" and it gives you the opportunity to click on all the players and glean their stats. Any doubts as to what Kamada does and how important he is to the overall functioning of the midfield should be dispelled immediately.

Not a startling revelation but he's a pretty average player in the PL and is better playing against European teams. Some players are just better suited to different styles.

Again Kamada's stats check out - he's always amongst the most accurate passers and also wins his tackles, and he covers as much ground as the best of them. Those who constantly criticize him have no clue.

Agree, and the constant moaning about lack of goals.

He's got a really good goal record, just not for Palace. Its less of a reflection on him, and more a reflection on the role our midfield 2 play for us.

Kamada may not look as flash as some other midfielders near the top of the table. But his statistics for us are always solid. I see him as the key to both our defence and our counterattacks.
He was a key ingredient 'when we were Kings at the Palace'. Unbeaten in 19 games.

I am not a Kamada hater, and I think against most teams we are a better team with him on the pitch

I also think it is unfair to judge him on his inflated salary because he joined "on a free"

The one bit of his game that infuriates me though, is his lack of "bite" and determination in challenges - often just making it look like an attempt but not really going for it

Even last night, before his great pass to JSL for the goal, I thought he bottled the challenge, but got lucky to come away with the ball and not lose it for them to counter us

I am therefore a bit 50/50 if he stays or goes and would be fine either way

thought he had a couple of moments when he looked absolutely clueless, like when the ball was cleared up to him and their keeper was on the half way line and he headed it back to no one to lose possession. He had no idea what to do in that situation. But then he scored a really well taken goal and that assist for JSL. I'm not convinced by him at all, but do acknowledge he has rare moments of brilliance (like the semi v Villa).

Unless you happen to have seen him play, of course. In which case those doubts may linger.

Just on performances alone, and setting aside cost/value etc, my view is that he was initially used as a No10 but was hopeless. Then, rather than being dropped, he was relocated to centre mid where he was just about OK. He had some of his better games in the latter stages of the cup run last season but was, in my view, fortunate to start the cup final ahead of Hughes or Lerma. He did play well on the day, though. Since he came back from injury earlier this calendar year he has been in the best form I have seen from him, though overall I would put his performance level as 'average' over his whole time with us, whilst noting a welcome improvement in the last few months.

Part of me thinks that he has slowly gotten used to the English game, hence the upturn in recent form (albeit mostly he has had his best games in Europe). I would be happy for him to stay, even on those wages, if he kept the same level up for another year or two. He still wouldn't be a star, though.

The other part of me thinks that he has got his finger out a bit now because he is in the shop window again for his next move, and doubts whether he would play as well next season if he got a new deal with us. I thought he was one of the best players on the pitch at home to Fiorentina in the quarterfinals, but that level of performance stands out for its rarity and, perhaps, for its timing.

I don't really get this thing where if you don't rate a player you are a 'hater'. I want all Palace players to do well. I thought Kamada played well last night, but not for statistical reasons. I mean, if our keeper let that shot beat him we would be concerned, and the pass he played to Larsen came about after one of theirs had slipped over rather than because Kamada had beaten him. Kamada scored and assisted, but there is always a story behind the stats. My praise for his performance comes from what I saw, not what I counted. I am happy to give him his dues, but the idea that stats alone can prove the point has been done to death on here.

Unless, of course, there is a stat for how often a player blows a pretty good chance to help his team get a goal on the break by shitting himself to an almost comical extent at the mere prospect of bumping into a goalkeeper. In which case, the stats may have a point!

Funny how he’s performing now he’s going to be looking for a new contract elsewhere in the summer…….but we’ll gloss over that and not spoil the mood😇😂

We function better as a team, when he plays. We didn't win any games when he was injured. He is basically competing with Hughes and Lerma to start, its obvious he is all round game is head and shoulders above theirs.

I noticed during the lifting of the fa cup that Kamada was reluctant to hold the cup.

He seemed very humble during those moments. I know this is a thread on how good he is; but he seems a nice young man.

As a player he's certainly been much improved from last season.

For much of his time with us I would have had Kamada behind one or both of Hughes and Lerma, but both seem a shadow of themselves at the moment, whereas Kamada is at the top of his own game.

He is worth his place ahead of both at the moment, but I think that reflects how poorly they are playing as much or more as Kamada's own improved form (though again, credit to him for it).

I would acknowledge he has been inconsistent for us over the course of his two years in SE25. I do not think the weekly grind of the English domestic season suits him.

Where he has been impressive is in some of the big games. Specifically, the FA Cup run last year and some of the European games this season. He has also sparkled in some league and cup games against the bigger teams (several Liverpool matches come to mind but there have been others like the early season win at Aston Villa).

I think he plays a lot better (1) alongside Wharton, (2) when there is decent movement up front, and (3) inside Munoz.

Re (1), they have not played consistently together as much as I would have liked because of injury.
Re (2), Pino, Guessand, and Johnson have taken their time to settle and they are not the same sorts of players as Eze/Olise/Sarr. I do not think the squad changes have enabled Kamada to show what he can do.
Re (3), Munoz had a spell out injured which changed key patterns of play Kamada was involved in.

So I think he has been a qualified success.

It may be a sweeping generalisation but Japanese people do tend to be respectful and modest.
