Wolves vs Palace.....Match Thread

I'm more tolerant than others of Sarr's and Nketiah's misses in attack, as I remember Mateta's being regarded as useless for months when he arrived at Palace. (The Brighton match notwithstanding.) Ditto for Edouard (his debut notwithstanding, too) whom I never loved but who eventually turned out to be useful in attack.

I'm not as tolerant of Nketiah's turnovers, as those seem to be a matter of awareness and decision making rather than clinical execution. Although he still plays young and nervous, I think he'll settle in. Both he and Sarr – and Kamada – need to be much better at pressing, however. Ollie should show them tapes of old-man Jordan Ayew...

I think Munoz is our new Ayew and he has adapted pretty well. When OG wants to close out the game he puts him forward and he works his backside off harrying the defenders.

Nketiah’s effort and attitude are great. He tries hard and you can see he really wants to do well. Sadly it is difficult to see what he is actually good at as a forward. Doesn’t hold it up, doesn’t link play, passing is poor, isn’t a physical presence, movement isn’t special and finishing is poor. This is a player who didn’t do especially well in the Championship on loan. He would have been fine as buy to be a squad player but paying £30m for a player with his record was silly. Hopefully he starts contributing or it will go down as one of our worst transfers.
I think it’s a lack of confidence, his heart his in the right place he has had a lot of game time for us he just wants to prove to everyone and possibly himself, I think og will be able to get the best out of him.

I hope so. As I say you can’t fault his attitude but his record as a player doesn’t show any time when he had a consistent run of form. Hopefully we see that but it would represent a big change from his career so far.

If he could link up with mateta better that would be an incredible force you know mateta can hold that ball up he is a beast. and for nketiah with his bit of pace to run on too it could work. If he stops shooting direct at the goalie 😂

Nketiah has not scored since last December so has not been used to hitting the net.
It is the model of plausibility that once he scores for us he will bloom.

I just think it was an incredible amount of money to spend on somebody who has never looked like he was going to be a quality player...
Certainly any Arsenal fan I've ever spoken to have all used exactly the same word about him... 'Useless'.

There is something there with him but £30m worth?? Arsenal must have been laughing.

Let's hope he can come good but the early signs aren't great

I am informed the sum paid was £25 Mill rising to £30 Mill.
I witnessed Nketiah when Marcelo Bielsa signed him for Leeds and I never concluded that his performances merited high praise. He only scored 3 goals in 17 League appearances for the club so he was hardly prolific.
He was only a bit-part player for Arsenal so has not had the experience of playing in the PL on a regular basis.

I don't like doing it which is why I seldom do. I'm working on the assumption that any competent player could have done what he did today and hopefully a bit more. What concerns me is that the highest paid player at the club has so far contributed so little and the possible effect that might have on the rest of the team.
The highest wage is to do with his arriving on a free and spreading the signing on fee over the durstion of the contract; to the best of my understanding the club's outlay is as would be typical for a £20m transfer. Statistically he did significantly better than Hughes, though to watch there didn't seem to be such a difference. He was playing in his 'can also' position rather than his best - probably also true for Hughes but then no one's suggesting an academy prospect might be preferable to him, though it might come to that if Ducoure can't manage a full game on his return or has an adverse reaction to yesterday's outing.

That's fine if he's worth the highest wage at the club and at the moment, to me, he isn't. Not to say he might not go to be an excellent signing, which everybody hopes he is, but so far he just isn't.
What am I missing in his game?

Reflecting back on the match a draw was probably a fair result. It was quite an open game and both teams did not make the most of their chances. Wolves looked a team devoid of confidence in front of goal hence why they did not score for the first 2/3's of the game. From Palace's point of view you really wanted the chances to fall to Mateta at the moment but they seemed to largely fall to Sarr who also looked short of confidence having not scored for us in the league.
Given Wolves had a full 7 days to prepare and this was our third game in 6 days it was a decent effort to come back from going behind.
Agree the Dawson handball that was missed was a big decision that did not go our way as this was a potential red card moment.
Thought Munoz had a decent game as did Mitchell, Mateta, Guehi and Henderson.
The injuries and suspensions look to largely be short term ones so with the likes of Eze, Wharton, & Lerma to be added to the squad hopefully after the next international break we should be good.

His only goal for us in 13 games was against Norwich in the League cup, however nearly all of his appearances have been from the bench.
In actual fact Sarr has only scored once in his last 27 games.

I think the game panned out pretty much as expected.

With our midfield issues we were always going to find it tough against a Wolves team that likes to play through the lines.

Palace had more chances but I think Wolves had the better ones.

At the moment we are requiring players to play in positions that clearly don't suit them - I'm looking at Kamada and Nketiah here. I can understand why they are struggling at the moment, but my own struggle is to see where they fit in once more players are available.

Fulham is going to be a grind. I'd settle for a point and then hope we get players back after the break.

With our injuries and suspensions, I will be very surprised if we gain a point.
To my mind, Fulham will be far too strong on the day.

Glasner spoke about the club carrying a smaller squad into the new season to create clearer pathways for the youth players to step up. Well, if ever there was an opportunity for a player to step up it's now. It's an almost certainty that Kamada will start in central midfield against Fulham but then that just leaves Doucoure who has played very little football over the past year or Schlupp who looks like this is one season too far for him. After that, it's asking someone to play out of position, but even then I don't see any obvious options unless you disrupt the back three by moving Trevor into midfield. It will be an experienced first-team so now is perhaps the time to give someone like Devenny their opportunity. He's 21 and seems confident in himself having captained the U21s while he also has experience of playing men's football in Scotland.

I don't think we did find it tough. Thought for large spells of game we were in control. Created a bundle of chances and should have won it.

The missed chances I can stomach. Annoying as there are, at least we are making them. But there were a few missed passes on the break (a Nketiah one sticks in the brain) that are so disappointing. In comparison Wolves found the right passes on the counter for their 2 goals.

For me definitely a game to take the positives, 3rd game in the week, against a more rested side. Big player missing.

Biggest worry for me is Doucoure, thought he looked miles off the pace when he came on.

I think conceding 2 goals in the manner that we did added together with a couple of 1 on 1's that Wolves had and probably should have scored from demonstrates how tough we found it in midfield - that was my point.

In possession we were mostly fine. Out of it and in transitions we weren't.
