Wolves vs Palace.....Match Thread

I agree Nketiah and Chalobah were at fault but you have to question the wisdom of having your centre back overlapping when your 1-0 up away from home against a team that scores most of their goals on the break, so I don’t think Guehi is blameless.
While we’re on the subject, Mitchell should have been covering for Guehi’s absence and busting a gut to get back when Nketiah lost the ball so he could cover when Lacroix had to leave his man. Instead he was ball watching and jogging back until it was too late.
Mitchell is guilty of a number of weaknesses in most games, more so since he was converted to a wing back in our 3-4-3 set up. But we have had no proper cover for him for years now. We need a Premier standard left wing back who Mitchell could cover from the bench. I keep hearing on commentaries and pundits (streaming channels mainly) how we are lopsided as we are funelling most things down the right because of this issue.
Hopefully this is a priority for January. Mitchell unfortunately has always looked timid going forwards normally turning and playing the ball back to anyone who he sees, but when he is in a jam and has to go forwards, he plays with an anxious desperation to get rid of the ball as fast as possible. I have also noticed how our players often ignore a pass to him when it is clearly on. Sadly, a regular weak link.

Mitchell is a big problem, he lacks positional sense, he is unable to defend the back post, he is easily passed, poor at passing ball out, cannot cross the ball and really is very over rated player at EPL level.

Former Wolves defenders Andy Thompson and Lee Naylor both felt the Palace goal should have stood. While Gallagher did say the decision was correct according to the law he did also say Wolves got away with one. I suspect if the ref had given it VAR wouldn’t have intervened

Well, that's just your opinion. Who would YOU replace him with for the next game?
There is the problem, we have no real competition for him and consequently we soldier on with someone who is at best an EPL bench player and at worst, probably more suited to championship or the lower leagues where in all probability he may also struggle. In the modern game you need six fit players on the bench who can come and make a difference. Our bench is weak and as a result OG does not have the options that other managers have. We have been in the EPL for circa 11 seasons now and we have lost ground on teams like Bournemouth, BHA, Brentford, Fulham and N.Forrest, all of which have been in the EPL less time than us but as teams they are consistently better than us. One of the main reasons behind that is that our investors would rather be out than in and therefore are reluctant to make available the necessary funds to invest in the first team squad at the level required to perform consistently in this league.

So, all that is Mitchell's fault, is it? You ( & others) don't like him, fair enough. He is an ever present player giving his all for the club. He is also the 4th best performing LB/LWB in the EPL. It is very disrespectful to slag a PALACE player off as you have done. You are not tho, alone in your thinking, nature of fans I suppose, all need a scapegoat & Tyrick is it.

Apparently, Glasner wanted a smaller 1st team squad rather than the permitted full 25 so as to provide bench opportunities to the better Academy players. Unfortunately, we have our four genuine 1st choice DM options out injured or suspended plus 2 CB options and our main creative player out injured. That's 7 genuine 1st team options unavailable and the reason why we currently have little meaningful bench options. The fact that three of our Summer signings have so far failed to do their jobs sufficiently only adds to the crisis we face.

I expect things to improve after the International break and that we'll be better placed come the New Year.

Meanwhile, let's get behind our team.

There is a lot of truth in this. Imagine how f***ed we'd be if Mitchell wasn't the type to remain fit for basically every game. Probably jinxed it now.

Do we believe this or is it just a bit of post hoc justification for why the first team squad is so thin?

Having a thin squad is the default setting at Palace, it remains to be seen if any of the youth players are given a chance and are able to make a positive impression under Glasner.

I thought recently in an interview one of OG criticisms was about having a very thin squad and the incomings were at the last minute so he had no pre-season preparation with them, that's how, I think it was reported.

If we had signed a couple more players they would likely have been another full-back and possibly another winger. The fact the club let Ozoh go out on loan suggests they felt we didn't need any more cover in central midfield (as it is he is also out with a hamstring for Derby anyway!) OG's comments about giving the youngsters opportunities will now be tested as if he and the club really did choose to have a small squad to give them chances then surely they have to get minutes now? My best guess is none will start and depending on how the game is going one or two might get 5-10 minutes at the end. Personally I'd rather see a youngster get the nod over Schlupp, but in the position the team is in I think Glasner will go with experience.

I agree. Still concerns me though whether players are being pushed too hard - especially coming back from injuries - (last couple of years there has been talk of injuries occurring in the training ground). OK the days of Greavsie and Jack Charlton, et al, having a fag and pint of brown ale before coming onto the pitch are long gone (well possibly apart from Schlupp??). The good thing about Eze and Wharton is that, like Zaha, they desperately want to play - which I guess is better than a load of expensive sicknotes - but put 'em back too soon and performances will suffer, and with it their confidence. I've said it before, you need confidence to maintain team spirit, this leads on to the entertaining - sometimes cocky - performances that generate the type of runs we saw last year. And yes, blood one or two of our best youngsters before they get poached by a bigger club.
