What a difference a game makes.

The changes to the Europa League present us a reasonable good opportunity to go deep into the competition. Looking at this year’s table, a couple of wins will get you to the playoffs. Which if we are lucky with the fixtures is well within reach. Minimum another 8 games, but I’d be hopeful of a few more.

Keepers
Will need to replace Turner or buy him. Suspect we’ll be ok with one of the others to take the 3rd spot.


CBs
Assuming MG stays.

Chadi Riad isn’t back until Jan.

Do we need 2 more? Or with Lerma, will 1 more be enough until Chadi is fit?

Chalobah seamed well liked by the group, so I’d be looking at him.

Full back
Haven’t been impressed with Chilwell but, we probably need cover for both sides. If you could get him for reasonable money it feels like a sensible decision. Or a season loan?

RB cover is essential.


CM
With Kamada impressing we look pretty solid in centre mid. Personally, I’d like another progressive body in there. If Sunderland don’t go up, I’d be looking at Bellingham or Rigg. I think Enciso on loan from Brighton has also looked pretty sprightly.

Could Hindolo Mustapha be that one?

I’m not sure that Doucouré is ever going to get back to the level we need.


Wide men
We’re pretty good here. But I recon we might need another senior body in. Potentially a loan.

Not sure JRS is the answer.

CFs
Likely depends on what happens with Edouard. Personally I’d rather just cast him off and bring in someone young and hungry. But the sensible money is to just use him for the league cup.

So by my count thats a keeper, a CB or 2, 2 full backs, and CM, Wide man and maybe a striker.
 
I can't answer the whole thing, but my reading is that Guehi is going. Bloody shame we don't have O'Brien, there's no central defenders coming through. We can't even say if Riad is, or will be, good enough. So at least two centre backs. That's going to be quite unlikely. We'll probably end up using Lerma there. And we are linked with one centre back.
Bright Osai-Samuel or whatever his name is, should be coming as Right back. Which makes me think do we need Clyne? Or do we keep him as central back up? I don't think it's worth it frankly.
Midfield maybe one, but Osai Samuel can play there. That's assuming we don't lose Eze. Also Franca is actually a midfielder, so is Devenny. So there are options. What will Doucoure be like? Who knows?
I think Mateta will stay now: he wants a good wage but is happy.
Jury out on Nketiah (or not!). But we've got him and no one else is going to want him.
Édouard - no way will Glasner keep him. He will not be part of any plans - except sell for whatever we can get. Popular at Celtic - he might go to Scotland for a couple of mil. He's basically next season's Holding.
Wingers - not sure. I think Rak-Sakyi's pretty good but I seem to be in the minority. I have no idea what the club think. Probably could be a squad player - particularly in other competitions.
 
Agree about Chillwell.

He's done nothing wrong but neither has he done anything to justify his wages. Mitchell is by far the better player. So if we are looking for backup better to go for a cheaper option.
 
I think Chilwell, or an experienced player in his category of being out of favour of the big clubs, shows the difference having the Europa league will make to improving the squad.

He hasn't managed to dislodge Mitchell, and well done Tyrick for that. The competition might have improved his performances.

But if Chilwell is interested, and we are interested, then there will definitely be game time for them both with the extra fixtures in the first half of the season.
 
Glasner seemed relaxed about this at the press conference and said no major changes were need to the squad.
He said the Europa games equate to just over an extra game per month up until January and we lose the early League up fixture.

Of course this would assume we don't lose too many.

Right now on the basis that the squad stays together with just Chilwell and Ward leaving, then we will need another defender and a LWB.
I'd also like to see a pacy player who can play across the front 3.
Enough of using Kamada and Devenny in these roles, where they do a job but don't threaten the opposition.

If we so lose a few big hitters then the equation obviousky changes.

What about our starlets at the academy. Any of them ready?
 
There are a few unknowns at present to totally predict we were need. But looking at it presently.

Keepers - we should be fine for.
Henderson as No.1, then we have options in Whitworth and Goodman. One of those may well become no.2 keeper.

Full-backs - we definitely need another left back, possibly another right back (depends if Clyne is kept on). There is Imray who has done really well at Bromley, but now needs to test himself at a higher level (ie. Div 1 or championship)

Centre backs - Guehi will go in the summer either by choice, or Palace sell so he doesn't run down his contract. So, another CB will be required.

Centre midfielders - it depends on whether Doucoure can come back and stay fit. Kamada has now shown he can play centre midfield. Also whether we can hang on to Wharton.

Attacking Midfielders - depends on whether we can hang on to Eze. There is Sarr, Esse, Franca and Devenney

Centre Forwards - definitely an area we need to strengthen. Mateta is a given, the sooner we can offload Eduoard the better. I'm still not convinced on Nketiah either.

Definite - left back, centre Forward, centre back
Possible - right back, centre midfielders, attacking midfielder.

  • Both wing-backs need genuine cover. We might get Oyasi-Samuel on a free. That would allow Kporha and Imray to go out on loan at a higher level and really make a claim.​
  • We need a CB.​
  • We need a backup keeper. Would send Whitworth out on loan again.​
  • I expect we'll use our full quota of loan signings.​
  • Otherwise, it's a case of adding quality depending on who becomes available.​

Various reports recently that Guehi might stay for another year to run down his contract which is a bit of a double edged sword if we could use the fee to strengthen and he's leaving anyway.
I haven't seen much of Bellingham, although he looks like a unit. I know he's still young and has potential but how good is he?

To me, he looks the ideal partner for Wharton, Strong, box to box, fantastic tackler, and sharp skills, not sure about his passing, but he can leave that to Wharton.

Ahamada is a mystery. When we signed him he'd done well in Germany but this year has made just 3 sub appearances for Rennes. Either they really don't like him, he's gone seriously backwards or he got lucky earlier. If he comes back maybe OG can work his magic on him.

Very sound reasoning but we won't get all seven,Glasner likes to trickle them in so it doesn't disrupt the squad family feel.
 
Two defenders and two attacking players is the rumour which makes sense to me.
Exits for Ward, Holding, JRS and Edouard.
I could see Clyne being retained for one year because of his versatility and experience, which would also free up some loan time for a youngster.

Get the feeling he conditions his body very well for an older player. Uses that and his experience to push the attacking players to their very limit in training. Then happily takes the bench. Worth another year just for that.

Just no, but he does need back up.

But, sadly, I agree Doucoure will not come back the player who won PotY a couple of years back.

And I doubt the club will have any say in Chilwell's future.
