What do we need

If we were linked with signing someone who is nearly 22 and whose total professional career is one good season in League Two, I'm pretty sure most fans would be asking what on earth we're doing and certainly no one would be expecting the player to come in make an impact in the PL.

But because we already own him, everyone seems to think that is what will happen? I don't get it.
We bought a 21 year old last year, based on one good season in the third tier in Scotland. That worked out OK.

Sometimes the opportunity gets the result. I've not seen enough of Imray to have an opinion myself.

Are you talking about Devenny..? He was 19 when we signed him.

I have. I went to about a dozen Bromley games last season.

Danny is a top player at L2 level. But he needs a permanent move higher up the pyramid now.

Being a regular bench warmer for Palace would not be a good next career step for him.

There seems to be general consensus that we need another LWB.

I note that the other day Devenny won MOM playing for Northern Ireland in that role and it made me pause for thought.

He's naturally left footed, has good delivery and gets up and down the field.
He's unlikely to be able to offer Mitchell's defensive skillset, but I could see him as an option in games where we are not on the defensive.

I'm sure I heard Glasner or one of the coaches speculating about Devenny at LWB previously - I just can't recall when/where I saw it.

Agree he's got the profile to make it work - good athlete, nice left foot, seems to read the game well and not afraid to make a tackle.

Certainly worth exploring.

I don't think that's his natural position but it sounds like he's the new Jeffrey Schlupp in that he can play in multiple positions in a pinch.

It's not at all, but there are very few natural wing backs, and it's not uncommon for midfielders and even wingers to find homes in those roles.

Henderson

Muñoz/Clyne

Richards/Riad
Lacroix
Guéhi

Mitchell

Wharton/Doucouré
Lerma/Hughes/Kamada

Eze/Devenny/Esse
Sarr/França

Mateta/Nketiah

We got some good kids waiting in the wings
Kporha
Imray
Rak-sakyi
Ozoh
Umeh
Mustapha
Goodman
Whitworth

Players that we need to move on:
Édouard
Schlupp...Gone
Holding...going
Ahamada
Ebiowei
Plange

So I think we need RWB,LWB,CB x2, Atackers x2

Central midfielders make very good fullbacks because they can tackle and pass. But in the modern game they need to be wingers too, especially for us. I think Devenney has that pace and energy

I’m not sure that Doucouré is ever going to get back to the level we need.

CFs
Likely depends on what happens with Edouard. Personally I’d rather just cast him off and bring in someone young and hungry.

i agree with the above.

Also i have much doubt about Nketiah's ability to score or create an assist. Obviously.

To the question in the OP......we need the strength in depth to sustain League and Europe, and minimise the disruptions of the inevitable injuries and suspensions. So no passengers ( nor question marks ) in the whole squad, all capable of winning the confidence of the manager.

We have seen PSG's amazing achievements with kids. And seen old men like Luca Modric to be slow, ungainly and dinosaurs. Previously i always liked an older-wiser squad.....like many Italian Giants. But i am now revising my opinions.

At this point given some of the internet chat past and present. I'd love a transfer window that looks like this:

Walter Benitez (free)
Ousmane Diomande
El Hadji Malick Diouf
Bright Osayi-Samuel (free)
Evann Guessand

Would give us a pretty strong squad with lots of competition for the 1st 11

Broadly I agree - the biggest variable of all though is who (if anyone) moves on? Depending on that your list might need an adjustment or two but I like the look of all the players here for sure.

Although that is a decent list, we have to think of the AFCON 21st Dec to Jan 18th, the highlighted will be at the tournament, Sarr, Doucoure, also

True, but (assuming we sign those, and they are starters) Mitchel, Lerma and Guessand/Franca/Esse can earn their wages for a month 🙂
