Villa v CPFC Match Thread

A bit harsh on Hughes there. Was clumsy for their penalty but I think he’s been our best player this season
Hughes has been superb this season. His attitude and work rate are both top drawer and he gives 110% every game, which is occasionally his downfall with the fouls committed.
I thought he was unlucky with the penalty today but haven’t seen it on the telly yet. The Villa fans who we were queuing with at Witton train station were all saying they didn’t think that one was a penalty either and felt they had a better shout for one in the second half.

Hughes remembers the likes of Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter (bites yer legs), Chopper Harris, and the Wimbledon crazy gang to name a few. He has obviously toned things down a lot!
It's what the game is missing. Proper really hard challenges has been replaced with shirt pulling, regular fictitious head injuries and players trying to win academy awards for their rolling around antics.
Bring back the old stuff any day. Hughes would fit in perfectly.
Agreed I reckon he would be on one yellow card at the most this season if it were the year 1979 .

I really can’t agree. Mitchell was not one of our better players today. He tries his best but his best is just nowhere near good enough. He was beaten far too easily for much of the game and turned inside out by his opponent more than once.

But the real problem is him going forward and it is championship standard at best. Poor distribution, hopeless passes, lacking composure and giving the ball away far too often. No overlaps, not an attacking threat and his crossing is generally abysmal.

A quality left wingback is much needed.
Your last sentence I agree with, the rest of your post, no. We all have our own opinions.

I was thinking that 5 points from villa, Newcastle and Ipswich would be reasonable . Then we would have the majority of our better players back.
That will be the end of 2 keepers on the bench and hopefully some forward options.
Tough place to go today. Decent point. Although 2 poor goals to give away, Barkley had just put a header wide from the previous corner (can’t be more than 5ft 11)

It was a good point and, being honest, I'm wasn't expecting anything today. At the very least it will give us something to work on in training other than trying to find ways of not losing.
Better form than Man City at the moment.

Watched the game on a stream. Felt nervous that at any time we would be overrun but thanks to our defensive play and their lacklustre performance as the game went on felt more confident we would not lose. Henderson made very significant saves at the right time and Mateta today had a good control day and caused them all sorts of trouble without looking like scoring.Sarr was better today but lacked the control to win the game for us. LaCroix although having a good game made a bad decision attacking the ball not getting it and leaving Watkins all on his own to score . We need Eze and Wharton back to give us creativity and until we do it is always going to be hit and miss on how we perform. Overall a great result and must give them positive vibes for the up coming games. COYP

A good point, but two terrible goals to concede.
You could drive a coach and horses through the gap in our defence for the first and the second was a free header.
Our 3 central defenders are good players individually and are in general playing reasonably well.
However, we still can't keep a clean sheet and will find it difficult to win games while this continues.

I thought we played well today and so did the guys around me. We had a real threat which was the main thing and I was convinced we’d win it at the death. Oh well..l

Admittedly many of our chances were as a result of lovely little flicks or through passes setting a player free with a run on goal but we still looked the part.

Hughes was huge but they all performed admirably.

Well done lads.

It looks like zonal marking because for the goal there were 3 defenders stood there looking at two players, both of whom were in acres of space and could have headed it home.

In fact it’s such a mess at corners that it’s difficult to work out exactly what we are trying to do.

I find it hard to believe that we play with 3 centre halfs and struggle so much at corners.

I enjoyed the match. Great goals. A hard second half facing an onslaught. Away fans were all happy.

If only he had a brain. The yellow he got for his suspension was at the end of a game on a player at the touchline near half way. Today he put his foot down the back of a player's leg who was in the penalty area but not facing the goal. Insane

one bit of luck we had was that Tielemans took the penalty. That was his fourth miss in the past six attempts. And with an England striker looking on

When they equalized at 1-1 I thought they will score again before half time. Then they got the soft penalty and I left the room in a hump only to rush back when I didn't hear the expected roar from the crowd.

We then ran down the pitch and scored and I just lost it. In 60 seconds despair to joy.

I'm 64 years old, and like so many football fans have seen more downs then ups, and yet I can still get excited. I love this club and it drives me insane.

Devnney took his goal well but he is not the 2nd coming yet. He has done nothing wrong and one great piece of skill but he is not the complete player. Let's just hope he continues to improve.

Still with our midfield almost fit it gives Glasner a nice problem.

Good points
- we looked more threatening on the counter than usual
- a well taken goal by Devenny who demonstrated real composure with his finish
- a couple of excellent last ditch tackles from Lacroix ( although part of me feels he shouldn't have to be making these - is it his positioning that is causing it?)

Bad points
- we continue to give up too many chances
- we give too many free headers in the box

I think he has more brains than most other players. He gets his yellows almost exclusively for the team because he knows when it's necessary to disrupt the opponent's flow of play to prevent trouble. It was ridiculous to award a penalty for his tackle yesterday. Keith Hackett, a former PL referee, has also noted this.

So he kicked the Villa player from behind, nowhere near the ball, thus resulting in a penalty, for the team? Ok, understood.

Although an improved performance attacking wise, the problem is still the system especially when we have the ball, the wing backs push up, quite rightly witch makes the two outside centre backs go wider, the if we lose possession around the halfway line or just in the opposing half, there are massive gaps between the 3, it almost looks like we are playing two fullbacks and one centre back, Chalobah made mistake after mistake yesterday, he has no positional awareness, Lacroix was excellent, but the problem of the system looks worse the more possession we have.

He didn't say about the pen, he said that's what he does in the middle of the park to stop the flow of the opposition, thus, resulting in a yellow card. That's how i read & understood it. I was surprised Hughes didn't get a yellow for that tackle.
