Villa v CPFC Match Thread

There were signs yesterday, and in other games, of what this team could be under Glasner. The back three set up is here to stay but I agree Chalobah lacks positional sense and is error prone. It’s a pity as he is one of the better players on the ball. If he was a permanent player he might be better suited as a DM, dropping back to cover when the back three splits. We missed that yesterday but maybe understandable given Doucoure and Lerma haven’t played together much. I suspect Richards is a better option on the right. Hopefully Guehi won’t be sold in January and Riad will be fit to take his place on the left when he does go.
Sarr was obviously told to be ready to exploit Villa’s high line and press on the counter with his pace and he did it well yesterday. Credit also to Devenny for having the insight and pace to get on the end of his cross and to Glasner for picking him.
Overall while we could have won the game and the goals conceded were disappointing it’s a good point against a decent Villa side particularly when we were missing the creativity of Wharton and Eze. We actually have the makings of a decent side and once we get those 2 back we will pick up points. We need to find a left wing back in January and either another right sided forward or bring JRS back. If we do we can have a strong second half to the season.
No more Groundhog Days! Stick with Ollie and the pressing game, continue to introduce academy players and pick up promising Championship ones and maybe one day even Match if the Day will think we’re worth placing higher up the schedule!
I think Mitchell's doing OK and still emerging from the role he learnt playing behind Wilf. But the lack of cover for either wing back alarms me and competition for places is always good. I agree with you about the signings we need but my concern is how to clear space in the squad for them. Presumably Holding will go and that's one slot; but where do we find the other two?

Are you saying this is an Australian site? I see it also contains a story that "Aston Villa in turmoil" so obviously a theme they like to exploit.

I must say that whilst Ward might have a view about what's going on, bearing in mind he's no longer being picked to play, I find it hard to believe that he would argue vigorously with Ollie about his management style. best to ignore I think.

Could be clickbait, but it could be true.

This is actually a situation where I trust Parish to understand the mood in the locker room, which is seldom upbeat and supportive when results are poor. But I think most of us fans understand that losing Olise, Andersen, Ayew and Johnstone would bring instability. And playing matches without Wharton, Eze, Doucoure and Lerma would make it difficult to repeat the results of last spring.

Sorry P.O.G. no, it's off an Australian Palace Supporters site that my cousin sent me on FB. I just posted it to see if anyone had any info, no smoke without fire etc.

Why would Franca exacerbate anything? He's done nothing more than a couple of cameos as far as I can remember. Then been injured, I think he was injured when we bought him which sounds ridiculous now. With our academy players coming through, he now looks relatively pointless. You'd have to think he's going the way of Camapana and Meyer. If Franca was fit, he wouldn't be playing now. Devenney and Agbinone are rightly in front of him.

As for Richards and others - good to see them back, like you say
I was just saying that even our plan Bs weren't available - with no Eze or Nketiah and Sarr underperforming he would probably have got a chance, off the bench most likely, if he does get fit again he could be useful as an impact sub in the short term, but I agree I'd rather give Agbinone a go ahead of Franca.

I'm another fan who was at the game and thought we did well. Yes, it was disappointing to have been pegged back twice but to be fair, Villa showed they are a decent team and (looking back on it knowing how it finished) it was a cracking game of football.

The result is that we slip to 19th after Wolves' win yesterday but we are looking like we can turn the corner and get out of trouble.

Of the outfield players, I thought:
  • Sarr finally came to the party
  • Lacroix was excellent in recovery situations
  • Mateta played a strong game, letting their defenders know he was about. Although he hasn't scored many this season, his all-round game has come on in leaps and bounds in recent weeks.
  • For a player who prefers his left foot, young Devenny took his goal with aplomb with his right foot. That bodes well. He also did well in other areas of the game. I hope he'll still get some game time when our key injured players are back.
  • the one downside for me was Chalobah who seems to be getting worse and making too many poor decisions. I'm beginning to think we should send him back to Chelsea after Christmas despite his generally decent skills on the ball.
I hope we can start turning draws into wins and narrow defeats into draws starting next week.

Agree, the Wharton Sarr combination is one I'm really looking forward too.

Speed x great footballing brain and early passer

I know 99% of this board is doom and gloom, but I genuinely think we'll tart ripping teams to shreds when we have a fit forward unit
You must live in some parallel universe, or taking the Michael, the only thing that should be ripped up is Glasners contract

A good point and one most of us would have taken at the start of the season; most of the team played well and some outstandingly. It's a reflection that we end up dosappointed to have missed all three. The more so when the number of injuries is taken into account; but that's the one niggle for me; while match sharp Wharton and / or Doucoure could very well have made all the difference, I felt we actually benefitted from the unavailability of the missing attacking players, Eze excepted.
by those you mean Kamada and Nketiah - one can't not agree but they might 'do a Sarr' and finally click - though he has undoubtedly benefited when we set up to exploit his pace. So if we play to the strengths of the other two hereto flops we should see a similar improvement - Kamada seemed to be improving until Fulham where he reverted back to his initial awfulness, but Nketiah, though he has also been a damp squib, might find his old form, things do change, there are countless examples of teams and individuals turing it round after bad starts, so don't give up on him just yet. We play Arsenal twice soon and maybe that will be the trigger. However, if he continues his current form till Christmas I will have run out of patience. And Kamada may benefit from Wharton's return, receiving and laying off quickly or finding space to shoot was his game b4 he came here, Wharton may allow him to play somerthing nearer his natural game.

Holding is a definite. Looking at the current squad the obvious option is Schlupp if someone will take him. Beyond that I wonder if Kamada might look for an escape route. Keeping Ward and Clyne might be a luxury if we could find alternatives we can afford but my guess is they will stay til the summer.

There are others though who might go that we'd rather keep - clickbait already has Wharton and Guehi (again) linked with moves and it wouldn't be a surprise if someone offered Mitchell a position more suited to his skills. If other clubs come in for them it'll be hard to convince them to stay.

Someone get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning .

Anyone witness this?

I was queuing at Witton station for about 30 minutes after the game. I didn’t witness the incident and didn’t hear anything either but Witton Road was very busy as is to be expected post match due to its proximity to the ground and the railway station.

What amazed me was Manor Rd (between the stadium and Witton Rd) was open to traffic and it was total and utter carnage and very dangerous. Basically imagine Homesdale Road only much narrower (room for only one car to pass between parked vehicles virtually abandoned for the entire length of the road). Cars trying to travel in both directions - completely stuck in a face off and surrounded by thousands of people leaving the stadium after the final whistle. Never seen scenes like it that close to any stadium on match day! Without question it should be closed to traffic as tempers were rising, no one could go anywhere and somebody was undoubtedly going to do something stupid and/or dangerous at some point.

I think there is an overall issue being ignored by the club, West Midlands Police & BTP, a bit like our issues with Selhurst Station…only a hundred times worse, thousands more people and a lot closer to the stadium!

I will be writing to both the club and WMP to highlight the issues.

Mitchell is woeful!- he’s not progressing - he’s going backwards..!!

His distribution/passing is absolutely awful - and that ain’t going to change..!!

For me new left wing back absolute priority in the Jan window, along with a left footed attacker..!!
