For me too. His timing when tackling in the box was excellent.Lacroix for me. He probably stopped 3 goals by himself.

Prior to signing Chalobah I was advised about the qualities he possesses, however I have not been impressed with him at our club.Although an improved performance attacking wise, the problem is still the system especially when we have the ball, the wing backs push up, quite rightly witch makes the two outside centre backs go wider, the if we lose possession around the halfway line or just in the opposing half, there are massive gaps between the 3, it almost looks like we are playing two fullbacks and one centre back, Chalobah made mistake after mistake yesterday, he has no positional awareness, Lacroix was excellent, but the problem of the system looks worse the more possession we have.
Yeah agree. I’d go with a back four, although we’d have even less width. The issues at the back are that we don’t look like a defensive unit so much as three individuals. Lacroix is excellent in recovery but is having to make recovery tackles because our defensive shape isn’t great. None of the back three is especially commanding in the air either.
To be fair to them it can’t be easy playing with a different midfield in front of them every game. Also our formation often leaves us exposed with runners from midfield. Personally I’d rather we played a back four with an extra man in midfield but we know that isn’t going to happen
The point about our back 3 splitting and pulling wide when our full backs push forward is valid, and this does leave gaps for the opposition to exploit.Although an improved performance attacking wise, the problem is still the system especially when we have the ball, the wing backs push up, quite rightly witch makes the two outside centre backs go wider, the if we lose possession around the halfway line or just in the opposing half, there are massive gaps between the 3, it almost looks like we are playing two fullbacks and one centre back, Chalobah made mistake after mistake yesterday, he has no positional awareness, Lacroix was excellent, but the problem of the system looks worse the more possession we have.
If on,y we had sorted Wharton’s injury earlier, he would have had a field day yesterdayDefensive frailties aside OG and his staff deserve some credit for working out how to play through Villa's high line. The first goal was a good example of planning coming to fruition and the way Sarr took it might give other clubs something else to think about in our games.
The issue isnt with the back 3, its the holding midfielder who should be a shield in front being by passed yesterday. Doucoure is nowhere near the player he was 2 years ago, having a year out injured has effected him, i know he has only just come back and hopefully his old form will return soon.they could have driven a fleet of buses through the middle of our defence for the first goal and that is in large part due to the formation as a poster rightly said, but I think it might be just as much to do with personnel, once we get Richards or Lerma to replace Chalobah I think things will improve, the loanee makes too many mistakes for me (and many others). Munoz wasn't great by all accounts yesterday, and Mitchell is not a wing back - it doesn't reflect well on our recruitment set up that that wasn't addressed in the summer. It was great to see Sarr finally show what he can do - I think the doom mrerchants will be eating lots of humble pie b4 we get to Christmas with a near full squad to choose from in December. It's not just the big players we've missed - the back up players injured like Richards and Franca excarbated the situation. Just hope OG keeps his rose tinted specs in their wallet where Kamada is concerned. We weren't expecting a point yesterday and I'm confident we'll get a few more pleasant surprises over the coming weeks. COYP 🙂
PS great to see the academy players playing so well - really impressed with Devenny and Agbibone and looking forward to seeing more of Umeh and Kporha
Why would Franca exacerbate anything? He's done nothing more than a couple of cameos as far as I can remember. Then been injured, I think he was injured when we bought him which sounds ridiculous now. With our academy players coming through, he now looks relatively pointless. You'd have to think he's going the way of Camapana and Meyer. If Franca was fit, he wouldn't be playing now. Devenney and Agbinone are rightly in front of him.they could have driven a fleet of buses through the middle of our defence for the first goal and that is in large part due to the formation as a poster rightly said, but I think it might be just as much to do with personnel, once we get Richards or Lerma to replace Chalobah I think things will improve, the loanee makes too many mistakes for me (and many others). Agree, i can still see the back four training as a back 4, pre-game in the warm up, nobody is suggesting Roy and Ray back, but you have to admire their organisation skills. The point about our back 3 splitting and pulling wide when our full backs push forward is valid, and this does leave gaps for the opposition to exploit.
Our centre backs don't look comfortable in these wider areas and I'm convinced it's one of the reasons why only Clyne has really looked comfortable on the right of the back 3.
He's a right back by trade so it's not an issue for him to move out to provide cover for Munoz.
Similarly Ward didn't look out of place on the right of the back 3.
Realistically neither Clyne nor Ward are going to replace e.g Chaloboah , but there is an argument that the team could have a better balance at least defensively.
I garland these comments with approbation.I’ve been very impressed with Devenny. He is very efficient with the ball, passes completed percentage is very high and he looks to have a good footballing brain on him. He is young, very athletic, quick and has a good engine for box to box stuff.
He took his goal extremely well yesterday and after only two starts for the first team I think he shows a great deal of promise.
What is of concern to me is the conceding of goals away from home.Defensive frailties aside OG and his staff deserve some credit for working out how to play through Villa's high line. Indeed, considering we often have three centre backs on one centre forward, it's not good enough. We should consider rotational man marking or a back four with an anchor man, but we won't.What is of concern to me is the conceding of goals away from home.
We have conceded 2 goals in each of the games at Brentford, Everton, Wolves and A.Villa and we led in 3 of these matches.
indubiatably erstwhile yeomanI garland these comments with approbation.
