Villa v CPFC Match Thread

Although an improved performance attacking wise, the problem is still the system especially when we have the ball, the wing backs push up, quite rightly witch makes the two outside centre backs go wider, the if we lose possession around the halfway line or just in the opposing half, there are massive gaps between the 3, it almost looks like we are playing two fullbacks and one centre back, Chalobah made mistake after mistake yesterday, he has no positional awareness, Lacroix was excellent, but the problem of the system looks worse the more possession we have.
Prior to signing Chalobah I was advised about the qualities he possesses, however I have not been impressed with him at our club.
Perhaps he will blossom into the player described to me.

The issues at the back are that we don’t look like a defensive unit so much as three individuals. Lacroix is excellent in recovery but is having to make recovery tackles because our defensive shape isn’t great. None of the back three is especially commanding in the air either.

To be fair to them it can’t be easy playing with a different midfield in front of them every game. Also our formation often leaves us exposed with runners from midfield. Personally I’d rather we played a back four with an extra man in midfield but we know that isn’t going to happen

Defensive frailties aside OG and his staff deserve some credit for working out how to play through Villa's high line. The first goal was a good example of planning coming to fruition and the way Sarr took it might give other clubs something else to think about in our games.

Yeah agree. I’d go with a back four, although we’d have even less width.

The point about our back 3 splitting and pulling wide when our full backs push forward is valid, and this does leave gaps for the opposition to exploit.
Our centre backs don't look comfortable in these wider areas and I'm convinced it's one of the reasons why only Clyne has really looked comfortable on the right of the back 3.
He's a right back by trade so it's not an issue for him to move out to provide cover for Munoz.
Similarly Ward didn't look out of place on the right of the back 3.

Realistically neither Clyne nor Ward are going to replace e.g Chaloboah , but there is an argument that the team could have a better balance at least defensively.

If on,y we had sorted Wharton’s injury earlier, he would have had a field day yesterday

they could have driven a fleet of buses through the middle of our defence for the first goal and that is in large part due to the formation as a poster rightly said, but I think it might be just as much to do with personnel, once we get Richards or Lerma to replace Chalobah I think things will improve, the loanee makes too many mistakes for me (and many others). Munoz wasn't great by all accounts yesterday, and Mitchell is not a wing back - it doesn't reflect well on our recruitment set up that that wasn't addressed in the summer. It was great to see Sarr finally show what he can do - I think the doom mrerchants will be eating lots of humble pie b4 we get to Christmas with a near full squad to choose from in December. It's not just the big players we've missed - the back up players injured like Richards and Franca excarbated the situation. Just hope OG keeps his rose tinted specs in their wallet where Kamada is concerned. We weren't expecting a point yesterday and I'm confident we'll get a few more pleasant surprises over the coming weeks. COYP 🙂

PS great to see the academy players playing so well - really impressed with Devenny and Agbibone and looking forward to seeing more of Umeh and Kporha

The issue isnt with the back 3, its the holding midfielder who should be a shield in front being by passed yesterday. Doucoure is nowhere near the player he was 2 years ago, having a year out injured has effected him, i know he has only just come back and hopefully his old form will return soon.

I felt like we lost 2 points the way we gave the second goal away.
It also frustrates me to see Mateta going out the wings- he should be in the box or down the middle. We need to supply him because he is an old school centre forward- give him the ball and he will score!!

Having led twice, it's a little disappointing to take only one point from the game. But I would have gladly taken a point before the match.

In terms of some of the individual players, I thought we saw some of what Sarr can bring to the party. Strong and pacey and took his goal well. Mateta held the ball up as well as I've seen him do it and played Sarr in nicely for the first goal.

Midfield was a mixed bag. With Doucoure and Lerma still getting back to full fitness, we had to rely on Hughsie and the inexperienced Devenney. Much as I like Hughes, he plays on the edge of conceding free kicks due to his lack of pace, and out of possession he's not much use in protecting the back three. However, once we get Eze and Wharton back I think we will be a different proposition.

The back three then....Lacroix generally very good. There were situations where I thought his pace enabled him to make some challenges that Andersen would never have been in a position to make. However, I thought he was drawn towards the ball for Villa's first goal which left Watkins free to run through to score. Guehi was sound and composed when he needed to be. Chalobah though...too many unforced errors for my liking. His judgement is suspect at times and he commits himself too soon. He's not quite lived up to my expectations as yet, but he's another player that didn't have a pre season and has only recently come into the side.

And the defending as a team for Barkleys goal was poor.

Congratulations to Henderson for the penalty save. Amazing that less than a minute later we were 2-1 up and not 1-2 down !

Why would Franca exacerbate anything? He's done nothing more than a couple of cameos as far as I can remember. Then been injured, I think he was injured when we bought him which sounds ridiculous now. With our academy players coming through, he now looks relatively pointless. You'd have to think he's going the way of Camapana and Meyer. If Franca was fit, he wouldn't be playing now. Devenney and Agbinone are rightly in front of him.

As for Richards and others - good to see them back, like you say

Agree, i can still see the back four training as a back 4, pre-game in the warm up, nobody is suggesting Roy and Ray back, but you have to admire their organisation skills.

I’ve been very impressed with Devenny. He is very efficient with the ball, passes completed percentage is very high and he looks to have a good footballing brain on him. He is young, very athletic, quick and has a good engine for box to box stuff.

He took his goal extremely well yesterday and after only two starts for the first team I think he shows a great deal of promise.

I garland these comments with approbation.

What is of concern to me is the conceding of goals away from home.
We have conceded 2 goals in each of the games at Brentford, Everton, Wolves and A.Villa and we led in 3 of these matches.

Indeed, considering we often have three centre backs on one centre forward, it's not good enough. We should consider rotational man marking or a back four with an anchor man, but we won't.

There were signs yesterday, and in other games, of what this team could be under Glasner. The back three set up is here to stay but I agree Chalobah lacks positional sense and is error prone. It’s a pity as he is one of the better players on the ball. If he was a permanent player he might be better suited as a DM, dropping back to cover when the back three splits. We missed that yesterday but maybe understandable given Doucoure and Lerma haven’t played together much. I suspect Richards is a better option on the right. Hopefully Guehi won’t be sold in January and Riad will be fit to take his place on the left when he does go.
Sarr was obviously told to be ready to exploit Villa’s high line and press on the counter with his pace and he did it well yesterday. Credit also to Devenny for having the insight and pace to get on the end of his cross and to Glasner for picking him.
Overall while we could have won the game and the goals conceded were disappointing it’s a good point against a decent Villa side particularly when we were missing the creativity of Wharton and Eze. We actually have the makings of a decent side and once we get those 2 back we will pick up points. We need to find a left wing back in January and either another right sided forward or bring JRS back. If we do we can have a strong second half to the season.
No more Groundhog Days! Stick with Ollie and the pressing game, continue to introduce academy players and pick up promising Championship ones and maybe one day even Match if the Day will think we’re worth placing higher up the schedule!

A good point and one most of us would have taken at the start of the season; most of the team played well and some outstandingly. It's a reflection that we end up dosappointed to have missed all three. The more so when the number of injuries is taken into account; but that's the one niggle for me; while match sharp Wharton and / or Doucoure could very well have made all the difference, I felt we actually benefitted from the unavailability of the missing attacking players, Eze excepted.
