Trevoh Chalobah

His best period for us was at the end of last season on the left of a back 3.
Under Roy he played in a back 4 as a central defender, or occasionally in midfield.
I have never seen him play well for us on the right of a back 3.
He is too easily exposed when dragged out wide and Munoz is not really a help as he's pushed so far forward.
At least on the left of a back 3 , Richards has the more defensively minded Mitchell to help him out.
It was noteworthy on Sunday that it was Guehi who was moved out to the right of the back 3 to replace Chaloboah, and it wouldn't surprise me if that is the case v Leicester later.
I don't see where Richards plays for his country as having a significant bearing on Premier League games.
Yes I noticed this last season and this season as well. He is right footed isn’t he? But seems far more comfortable on the left side of a back 3.
Tough window so far but 2 weeks to go and seems we all need to be very patient……again

Richards is not suited to the right sided role in a back 3 when the opposition play a pacy left sided forward; that may be the case tonight with Leicester and Mavididi.
Richards doesn’t like to be dragged out wide and exposed in yards of space.
We could have be 3 down in half an hour against Chelsea such were his struggles in dealing with Sancho.

The exit of Chaloboah leaves us unbalanced.
Guehi, Richards and Riad all favour the left sided role in a back 3.
I agree, I made the same comment in the match thread and suggested it would have been better playing Clyne alongside Munoz. Horses for courses really, if you are playing against a tricky winger then Clyne would be better, but if they play bigger players through the middle then Richards better.

I don’t suppose we’ll ever hear the real inside story on whether Chalobah returned to Chelsea willingly or was forced to do so. Click bait suggests the former as he wanted to help them out even though they have said they will sell him in the summer. I find that hard to believe given how they treated him last summer and how popular he was at Palace.

I sense there will be plenty of folk on here pining for his return as, although he's not made anywhere near the same impact as Conor Gallagher, he has managed to demonstrate an ability to improve our recent performances. I never did like Chelsea.

Glasner said at last week's press conference that Chaloboah wanted to stay.

There's no reason to doubt this.
With us he put together the longest run of games than he has for a while.
He also managed 3 goals in not much more than a dozen appearances.

He's now going back to a club where the manager didn't want him at the beginning of the season and, even with their injuries, there's no guarantee he'll put the sort of run of games together that he managed with Palace.

One story is that they want him back to sell him. As a home produced player a sale would help their financial situation in terms of how the proceeds are treated.

I think there may be more to play out in this story.
I understand our loan did not contain an option to buy, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't retain an interest if a deal became affordable .

Cant imagine in a month of Sundays he wanted to go back. But doesn't really have a say in the matter.

May get a game or 2 to tide them over whilst some of in the injured players come back, or until then splash the cash on a new CB

They've treated him pretty shabbily. Firstly making it clear he wasn't part of their plans, loaning him out and recalling him as cover after giving his shirt number to João Felix while he was still there; it was no. 14 which he wore in memory of his mother. In the grand scheme of things it might not be a big deal but on a personal level it would be. If he can buckle down and do a job for them it will say a lot about his character.

yikes, thats pretty cold.

I expect in comparison Palace felt significantly nicer and closer.

I know some Chelsea fans and they were against freezing Chalobah out in the first place and think he’s been treated appallingly.

They expect him to get a rapturous reception when he plays.

I’d like to seem him back at Palace if he’s available in the summer, but I have a feeling that’s not going to happen

The fans think of him as one of their own but as Gallagher found out that only gets you so far and ffp makes homegrown players even more likely to be sold.

So are we going to be bidding at £25m?
We did a knee jerk buy with Nketiah at that price.
He's caught in the mid-range player trap where the clubs who can afford him don't need him as much more than back up and he's unlikely to want to go anywhere to do that again. If it doesn't work out at Chelsea his best bet is to run his contract down to make his fee more affordable. Not ideal but lots of players do it.

Nketiah and Chalobah are different apples as the latter was poison tested with half a season on loan.

Chalobah and Gallagher are better comparables. I suspect, as you say that Chalobah will let his contract run down and then head for the Continent or the Gulf.

And also like Gallagher, I doubt we will see him in red + blue again.
