Trevoh Chalobah

We cant afford to lose both, and it looks like we have no control over Chalobah, so Guehi who we have control over has to stay, Guehi, Lacroix, Riad, Richards and at a push Clyne or Lerma is enough for half a season.
This one could go right to the last day. Chelsea won’t recall Chalobah unless they have no other options and I agree we won’t risk losing both so nothing happening with Guehi while there’s a risk Chalobah gets recalled. Unless Chelsea sign someone meantime this one will run right to the end of the window before they offer any reassurances. Funnily enough thst could work in our favour if it means we don’t sell Guehi.

They have recalled him today

Wow that is a blow, though not a complete shock. He had played his way into being a certain starter. I guess that is one of the downsides of the loan system. Pretty much, we got him match fit for Chelsea.

As a positive, Richards can step in and Riad is in contention. It also frees up a loan spot for someone else.

The timing isn't great. Just before a very important game.

As loans go this was a win all round. We got cover while Richards and Riad were injured, Chalobah got to play regularly, and Chelsea got a match fit player for the rest of the season. It’s a pity we couldn’t keep him and I agree the timing isn’t ideal, but presumably Richards will be on the right of our back 3 tonight. Riad is better suited to the left side and should replace Guehi in the summer.

Richards is not suited to the right sided role in a back 3 when the opposition play a pacy left sided forward; that may be the case tonight with Leicester and Mavididi.
Richards doesn’t like to be dragged out wide and exposed in yards of space.
We could have be 3 down in half an hour against Chelsea such were his struggles in dealing with Sancho.

The exit of Chaloboah leaves us unbalanced.

Big blow.

Forces Guehi into staying again and his transfer value keeps dropping - this is beginning to feel like one we'll look back on in future years as a real error of planning.

Richards has looked rusty during his recent run. Chelsea scored down his side after Sancho did him and Arsenal was an all round mess at the back. Chalobah carries the ball out more and gets closer to Munoz. I think we'll really start to notice the pain of not having Wharton to take the ball off Richards' toes as he did last year. Guehi didn't look comfortable on the right so it really is Richards now.

Set piece threat drops a lot with Chalobah gone. Forwards needs to start producing.

Hopefully we get both the signings Glasmer identified. Just Esse would now be a net negative transfer window.

Given that would you take Chalobah plus cash for Guehi now and play Riad, Lacroix, and Chalobah for the rest of the season or wait til summer and swap Guehi for Chalobah?

Glasner was adamant last week that Guehi wanted to stay.
Presumably not necessarily in the long term though if ,as rumoured, he’s unwilling to sign a new contract.
Personally I would keep Guehi for at least the rest of this season.
He’s been a mainstay of our defence , is rarely unavailable,is pretty consistent and I feel reassured to see him on the teamsheet.
I don’t think his value will decline that much between now and the summer, when a decision will have to be taken if he doesn’t sign a new contract.
Chaloboah has been good for us but has had previous spells of injury and poor form, so his long term track record is not reassuring in comparison to Guehi.

Richards favours the centre or the right, NOT the left. That's where he plays for the US & has played for us when he was picked. Also he has not long returned from injury so yes he is a tad rusty.

His best period for us was at the end of last season on the left of a back 3.
Under Roy he played in a back 4 as a central defender, or occasionally in midfield.
I have never seen him play well for us on the right of a back 3.
He is too easily exposed when dragged out wide and Munoz is not really a help as he's pushed so far forward.
At least on the left of a back 3 , Richards has the more defensively minded Mitchell to help him out.
It was noteworthy on Sunday that it was Guehi who was moved out to the right of the back 3 to replace Chaloboah, and it wouldn't surprise me if that is the case v Leicester later.
I don't see where Richards plays for his country as having a significant bearing on Premier League games.
