The January 2025 Window

We really should have got a cb a couple of injuries and a suspension the back line could be Chilly, Ward, Clyne.
It didn't need to be the next England star, there must be loads across Europe that know the job.
Probably the easiest and cheapest slot to fill.
I didn't realize there was A European centre back supermarket where you can just buy one off the shelf.

Glasner has already said we need a new left wingback and another forward and he said he wants them on 1 January – good luck with that! Personally, I think we'll get both, but I think the forward will be a loan, with a view to Franca returning and not wanting to present an obstacle to Jes returning next season to compete for the first team.

I would likely us to sign the Millwall lad Romain Esse who looks a real handful. At left-wingback the options are less obvious although I think Alfie Doughty at Luton might fit OG's system well. It was rumoured in the summer Luton would accept £15 million which is not bad in today's market.
This was a prescient post from 26/11.
OG wanted two players: LWB and a forward. We got them.
Franca returning? Almost but seems to be close.
Sign Esse. We did.
The 1 January date was wishful thinking but Esse came in pretty early.
It's possible that those were our only targets and clickbait created the links to others although of course we might go for one or more of them in the summer.
IF those two positions were all we wanted it was a good window.

Zero centre back cover will mean reverting to 4 at the back should one of the three pick up an injury, dropping the wing back tactical approach for a while - not the end of the world, and the chance to see more than two in midfield.

No need to do that as we have Chilwell, Lerma and Clyne (and if fit, Ward) who have all played at CB. We used the 3 we own at different points during our run at the end of last season when Guehi was injured. As I recall, we did pretty well in those games.

Surely you know by now that OG will keep the same system and 'convert' another player into the back 3. It worked very well with Clyne and Lerma last season.

To be fair I simply said what OG had said he wanted, which he has seemingly been given. I hope I'm right about Esse though.

You are correct, it will be like that given what has gone on before. Probably Lerma, freeing up the midfield spot he currently occupies.

I would envision Mitchell slotting into a back three in an emergency with Chillwell LWB. Obviously this is not ideal but the injury to Riad and Trevor getting called back so late in the day left us short. I think we will be fine until the summer.

Just as long as we don't end up with a Super U own brand player. Probably an abbreviation for super useless.
And they would definitely smell funny.

Schluppy off to Celtic. Sky reporter in Glasgow said Celtic will benefit from his power and pace. I’m guessing he hasn’t seen him recently. Hoops do tend to make you look slimmer though. Anyway, thanks for the memories Schluppy and enjoy your time in Glasgow.
Haha, it’s vertical stripes that make you look thinner. Believe me, my missus has told me often enough. Unfortunately Schluppy will look like the child of the Michelin man and a Pacer mint in the Celtic strip.

If you analyse it purely on numbers its

Schlupp, Holding, Chalobah and effectively Riad out

Esse, Chilwell, in

On paper it looks like a poor window but in reality it will have little impact on our team.

Mitchell is 5foot 9 at best, opposing teams would target him.

I get that but unless they want me to get my boots on there is little other choice. My point was just that Mitchell is a much better defender than LWB. He is quick and I was talking worst case scenario only.

What I would say is there are few teams who play with two big strikers, therefore as long as you are covered at set pieces (Mateta is good in the air defensively) I see no reason why you can’t play a smaller player in a 3. Yes their striker could peel off to the far post but that movement would have to be covered off on the training field.

You will probably remember that one of our best CHs was Richard Shaw who was 5’9” so it’s not always about height.

Center Back from where?..... keep seeing folks on here saying we're not getting a CB and have failed the club etc etc... Half the clubs are looking for a good ball playing CB.. There are not many around that
a) are good enough for our system
b) are in our price range
c) are available to buy in Jan
d) are going to improve our team over the slim cover we have
e) are willing to come to Palace over other EPL clubs
It wasn't a great window as a permanent LWB and a CB would have been great but I'm happy with what we achieved with the restrictions we live with.
