The January 2025 Window

My concern with the window as it currently stands is that OG was clearly expecting two players in and that he had a good idea of who the options were. So far we have brought in Esse and lost Chalobah and now Doucoure and Riad to injury so what was already a thin squad currently looks a great deal thinner. OG will look a right mug if there are no more signings and he won’t be at all happy.

He'll probably walk or get poached at the end of the season. But he's not exactly a stayer so could be anytime. He seems to have fallen out with owners all over the place. Wonder what he was promised? And heard he was Textor's choice too - so what that means who knows?

Managers often say their club needs to strengthen and bring in new players. It’s often putting some pressure on the owners but also gives a bit of an excuse if results aren’t then great. “Well I don’t get backed with players”. Also why wouldn’t a manager say it? It’s a bit like a workplace survey where they asked if you think you are paid enough. Why would you ever answer yes?

I think the summer will be key. There will be a big rebuilding job to be done with the squad.

We are going to need at least one centre half when Guehi goes. Ideally two as I don’t think Richards is really good enough and Riad is an unknown.

We will need another striker if Mateta goes. They don’t come cheap but clearly Nketiah isn’t up to being first choice and we can’t have him as the only one in the squad.

Ideally we need another player in midfield as well. Lerma and Doucoure work hard but their passing isn’t great and we are overly dependent on Wharton in that regard.

That is a very difficult job to do on our budget.
This is mentioned every season, it never happens. Out of contract dead wood is given another year's contract, hope of academy players making the breakthrough is dashed, and a couple of £10m duffers are supposed to appease the masses.

All the while Mr Parish is running the show we will not progress or properly support the manager. As has been said, we are 3 players down since January 1st & the only player in doesn’t play in those positions. I know a lot of deals are done late but probably we need 3 more incomings. But, as usual not holding my breath. 1 appears to be an 18/19 Aussie forward with potential for the future - a good move as our team is always full of young players !
It’s always there will be 3 sides we can finish above & now in our 12th season at the top table we still can’t get ahead of teams like Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham & our friends on the Sussex coast.

What is the opinion on the possibility of Chilwell on loan? He'd do a job but would be a short term fix since we are unlikely to be able to afford him longer term.

Hi Teddy , Imho , i think the only way that will happen is if United buy Mitchell and if Chelsea pay a big chunk of his wages . I cant see it happening though as it would take too long to get him match fit and by that time he could be injured again . I think we have fairly decent if not better back up in Clyne . Just my opinion of course.

Suspect you're right. We'd only have him for four months anyway and we've surely had enough of bringing Chelsea's players up to speed.

His career is following the path of Drinkwater, big transfer from Leicester to Chelsea, cant break into the team and happy with big wages as squad player. They eventually got rid of Drinkwater to Reading and he was anonymous. Chilwell will go to the Championship, when his contract runs down, lost all his desire after injury.

Agreed. Only Kante and Mahrez of those who left Leicester were top class players (even world class in the case of Kante).

IMO I'm not sure this is right for us.

Massive wages, and hasn't played for months. So I'd suspect it will take weeks to get up to speed, (assuming he can keep injury free) to take TM's place for what 10 games and then feck off back to Chelsea.

Unless, OG thinks TM could shuffle into the back 3...

Agree, not right for us. We have Academy graduates on the bench, who are developing. In the past we have imported older players for short periods (while awaiting young players' development). If our young men are ready they should be given game time, rather than being shown not to be considered good enough.

Our last academy graduate full back got torn a new one and was taken off at half time. There is a whole world of difference between being able to field an experienced PL player and a youngster.

If we are in fact looking at Chilwell then the reason will be because he was one of the best attacking full backs in the league and a short term loan may suit us. We are not making this decision so if it happens then someone internally will have made it as being in our best interests.

Chilwell last played in September in Chelsea's 5-0 victory against Barrow.
He did not start, he replaced Malo Gusto in the 45th minute.

Disregarding wages and injury status, Chillwell is exactly the tyoe of player that could flourish in Glasners setup. so it's a yes for me.

Regarding his wages - I doubt we can afford him
Regrading his Injury status, whats the point of signing someone temporarily whos perma-injured?

I have no doubts about Chilwell’s ability or suitability.

But his lack of game time is a concern. He would require a version of pre season training to get his levels up to cope with Premier League football. And we’ve already seen what has happened to our players that started the season less than 100% fit.

As for his wages , I’d negotiate with Chelsea with a view to them subsidising- they currently pay all his wages for doing nothing
