The January 2025 Window

Philogene has more First Teem experience than Doak.
Whereas Doak is deployed on the right flank, Philogene, whilst being able to operate on either flank, prefers to play on the left.
Yup my comments are based on the assumption that Ipswich wont have enough money to buy both rather than what position they play. I'm guessing they either don't rate Doak enough or they believe he is going elsewhere or not at all.

As for Philogene he star has waned a bit so it is a risk.

In terms of Ipswich's financials, in the summer they purchased Omari Hutchinson for a fee which could reach £22.5 Mill, they acquired Liam Delap for a sum which could reach £20 Mill. There were those who believed such sums were extravagant for these players but it is proving money well spent.

In terms of adding an attacker I would like to see more pace and power.
The players we are linked with appear to be fairly lightweight, even if they may be skilled in possession.
I know this worked with Olise , but he really was exceptional.

Think Bolassie at his peak, or current Semenyo.
Players of pace and power that can play anywhere across the front 3 and who will always make life uncomfortable for opposing defences.
That’s what I would like to see.

I am informed that Doak is very fleet of foot and is direct.
In terms of physicality, at Celtic as a young player he was nicknamed 'Wazza' as his stature resembled that of Wayne Rooney and there were similarities between their respective styles of play.
At Celtic he was a quiet young lad but a fearless competitor when he stepped on to the pitch.

I actually think we are ok in terms of pace and power. We have Sarr and JPM who fit this description. What I think we need is a bit more guile and composure.

It will be interesting to see now who West Ham target with Potter taking over. They always have a far bigger budget than us and may target similar players

Here’s hoping we get the Palace Friday morning 11am announcement tomorrow of a first signing. Ollie must be wondering what part of “early in the window” wasn’t clear! It would be nice if it was Diouf or someone at left back but I’d settle for Esse or Doak.

To be fair to the club it looks like we had clearly identified targets and made reasonable offers. We are one week into the window. It’s not as simple as just being able to have a player deal done with the snap of your fingers. For example we may have made an improved bid for Doak but Liverpool don’t have to respond immediately. They can sit on it for a few days to see if anyone else comes in.

100%. Looks like we put in offers immediately.

I know the manager, and we all want players in as early as possible. But I really struggle to understand how some fans simplify things. Its a negotiation, it takes time. And has many moving parts.

e.g. the Esse bid/chatter may be real, or may siply be a tactic to get Liverpool to soften on Doak.

Its worth remembering that our ambition its to get our targets in asap, selling teams are looking for the most money, so are happy to drag it out until the end of the window if needed.

Absolutely right.

Negotiations can be protracted, there are many variables and a plethora of factors enter the equation.
Some can enter the category of 'Labyrinthine Complexity' and often deals can fall short just below the line much to the disappointment and frustration of the buying club and supporters.

They spent £100m in the summer window so must be getting close to FFP limits.

West Ham bring in a lot of revenue they are not like Palace TV money being the main source. (They are in top 20 clubs in the world)

Look at each season they spend close to that anyway.

This season they sold around 40m worth of players and the season before it was around 170m due to the Rice sale.

Palace don't have good business people running the club we have not pushed the brand globally (When the likes of West Ham & Brighton are way above you something is wrong)

If we had these West Ham people in charge we would have new stadium none of this messing around with building one stand which has taken a decade for what 10 thousand extra capacity which will never generate the revenue it will cost to build.

WHam also have the advantage of a 60,000 seater stadium for £2.5 m a year with no running costs for the next century.

West Ham have always had a bigger fan base than Palace. As for the global push you mention I see no evidence of that with Brighton so look forward to you providing examples of that.

As for the stadium issues, you’ve used a bad example. West Ham took advantage of a unique situation and if the tax payer wasn’t subsidising it then they would still be at Upton Park struggling to increase capacity in an urban environment .

Indeed. I also think it is wrong to say that TV revenue isn’t their main source of income. If the TV money was pulled then every single club excepting maybe 5 or so would be in major financial difficulty straight away. Look at France and Italy where declining TV rights in the most recent round of bidding caused utter financial chaos for even the bigger clubs.

As an aside TV money is a major risk for the EPL. In the last rights auction Sky were the only really serious bidder with Amazon and TNT retrenching a bit. Sky now have more football to cover than they really wanted on a declining TV base. Could see quite a significant decline in rights value next time around.

While i appreciate all of that, and accept that selling clubs can play hardball, it’s also true that some clubs seem able to “negotiate “ with greater alacrity than others! Given Glasner’s comments about having identified and agreed who we want, it’s not unreasonable to assume that there might have been negotiations going on ahead of Jan 1st regarding availability and cost of those players identified. Indeed, while clubs can’t sign players before that date, I’m not aware of any rule that says a deal can’t be struck in principle before then.

Maybe we tried? Who knows. It’s been a very quiet window so far. Only sizeable done deal in the EPL is Spurs having to make an emergency purchase of a keeper

Indeed, I prefer to assume that our guys know what they are doing vs assuming they are wet behind the ear

Agree, Ipswich won't be buying anyone winger now. They already have Clarke from Sunderland who is struggling to get a game.
In terms of Doak, it might be that Philogene was easier to get over the line. They were close to signing him in the summer until Villa activated a buy back clause. I suspect the hard work was done last summer
