Sentences too harsh!

Next you’ll be telling us it’s Keir the Farmer Harmer 😂

Oh dear Wissie, switch on!

British justice can be as barbaric third world ones as those still banged up years after 'indeterminate sentencing' was abolished in 2012 after being declared unlawful by the ECHR, will know.

12 years later there are still 3,000 people locked up who may have done such heinous crimes as stealing a plant pot or borrowing a laptop, 90 have committed suicide as they had no hope of ever being released.

It is utterly beyond belief, a modern disgraceful injustice, if you were to describe it to someone they would scratch their heads in disbelief, something that could not possibly happen.

A labour peer is trying to get a private bill through to re-sentence them but they are rarely adopted.

Why haven't they just done that anyway, or released them years ago?

It makes you want to weep.

😎
Yep all those “ right wing thugs” locked up for hurty words

I most surely won’t.

I despise this kind of childishness. It’s ignorant and reduces what ought to be serious discussion to the level of the playground.

I remember when Thatcher, who deserved both objective criticism and admiration, was described as “Thatcher, Thatcher the milk snatcher”. I wasn’t a fan of hers but I detested that kind of stupidity then just as much as I do now.

Anyone who decides to join in is part of the problem we have in not treating politics seriously.

Including David Lammy? Taking his nonsense seriously is impossible.

Yes. You don’t have to take him seriously, but you should be serious yourself unless you want to be regarded as poorly as he is.

You can still criticise objectively and in an adult way whoever is involved!

Indeed it’s even more important and much more effective if you do.

Nope. Locked up as examples and warnings that society won’t tolerate that kind of behaviour.

If it causes people to think twice before responding to being wound up by disinformation or rhetoric then it’s worthwhile.
So presumably society will tolerate being a paedophile? There are many recent cases where they have not been sent to prison, whereas hurty word throwers have.

Nah. The only benefit he provides is as comedy relief.

There is no connection between the two sets of circumstances.

What a Judge decides is the best way to deal with a paedophile, having heard all the evidence and considered the reports, will certainly bear in mind sentencing guidelines but will depend on the individual case.

What you seem to dismiss as “hurty word throwers” were all, so far as I am aware and certainly am all I am discussing, involved in the summer rioting. For such people society had an overwhelming interest in ensuring that examples were made in order to discourage others. I think the Judiciary were given the responsibility to do just that.

Every individual has the opportunity to appeal if they feel they have been mistreated.

So not everyone convicted of being a paedophile should be sent to prison? Wow! Society doesn’t want paedophiles to be made examples of and to discourage others? I have no words for this

Don’t discourage the paedophiles and those watching and buying videos of child rape is in effect what he’s saying. It’s either doubling down on trusting those in charge as he does on everything, or he can’t tear himself from disagreeing with everyone on everything. Not everyone’s cup of tea is a polite description.

I have highlighted your correct words. How that’s best achieved is not determined by amateurs on websites or in pubs. It’s achieved by experts producing reports and recommendations and enabled by Judges responding to them.

Whatever is decided needs not only be effective for the individual but sufficient to deter others so I would anticipate a custodial sentence in almost every case but not necessarily so in all. Making sure the behaviour is not repeated and deterred in others is the objective.

I certainly trust genuine experts in their field above amateur know it alls on football websites who believe they are better able to decide on every subject under the sun.

Of whom there are a few here!
