Nketiah?

I’m sorry but I don’t see what people are seeing in him.

His first touch was awful against Brighton, all he did was give the opposition an opportunity to regain possession.

He’s looked poor in front of goal with no composure. The one on one was diabolical.

I think we’ve been sold an inflated duff of a player who’s just ridden off the back of being part of a major club.

Yep that I agree with. We never seam to do well signing players from bigger clubs.

Often big fees, big wages and expectation that if they were nearly good enough for Arsenal/Liverpool etc they will be great for us.

Benteke, Sakho were good to start, but big wages made them a millstone around our neck
We've done OK out of Chelsea in recent years, Loftus-Cheek, Gallagher and Chalobah on loan (although Batsuayi was hot and cold in his two loans with us) and Guehi for a price significantly below what he's worth now.

Lucky stars we didn't borrow Mudryk. Although, had he come to Palace he might not have got involved in drug enhancement, assuming of course he knew anything about it.

So far, the best I can see is bench cover for Mateta, coming on when needed, like on Saturday. But he still needs to work his socks off on fitness and shooting to deliver. He looks to me like he really needs to focus once on the pitch. If he does all that, Im hopeful he can play a useful role for us. But in football anything can happen moving forwards. I remain hopeful he will get some goals soon enough.

Was sceptical of his purchase and his performances so far as my earlier comments will attest to.

However, have seen enough from his last two sub appearances in an actual striker position to believe that he deserves a chance to play there. His movement has been good and that header last night was sublime.

Mateta has to stay in the team, of course, but wondering if there's a system where we play 5-3-2 with Eddie and Mateta up front together.

I suppose the issue with that is that we'd probably have to have a midfield three of Eze, Doucoure and Hughes which would mean Sarr missing out which seems unfair given his own improvement.

However, at the least maybe it's a potential tactical switch we could try mid-game to go more attacking?

This morning I was reminded about a conversation I had a few years ago about Nketiah whereby I was informed that according to the player his game is mainly pace, movement and finishing and that he was working on his heading. His header last night was sublime.

In fairness to him the whole team has been a let down this season including the likes of Eze and Guihe up until recent games when we turned a corner. It's been a slow start all round. He may have been made a scapegoat for some.

I think he will find some form now with the team playing well and will get more minutes. Just look at Sarr. He will find the net over the Christmas period I'm sure of it.

What we have seen from the last two games is that Nketiah is what many have suspected - that he looks more comfortable down the middle.
Other teams have strikers sharing duties e.g one plays around 60 mins and the other around 30 mins as a substitute.
Whether Mateta and Nketiah would be comfortable with such arrangement is another matter.
I just don’t see Glasner playing 2 up front together except if we’re really chasing a game.
He’s quite methodical in his approach.

I’m surprised Nketiah isn’t receiving more acknowledgement for his goal last night.
The ball in didn’t have much pace on it , was slightly behind him, and yet he hung in the air and managed to generate enough power and accuracy on the execution to defeat the keeper.
For those of a certain age reminiscent of Dennis Law.

Nketiah also provided a very dangerous cut back towards the end which could well have provided an equaliser if we had enough players in and around their area.

I described Nketiah's header as "Sublime" and I share your praise for the reasons you have described.
Yes being somewhat advanced in age, I recall Denis Law who must be in his 80s now.

His goal yesterday was exceptional, a really excellent finish. Now it's up to him to find that level more consistently. I can't fault him for effort, he seems very keen, so there's a chance that it will turn out well. It all depends on how OG wants the system to work I guess.

I like him, he’s a finisher, he knows where the goal is, but let’s face it we’re never going to have a striker who’ll score 20 or more goals in a season, we just don’t create enough chances at this level.
Mateta performed a minor miracle last season getting close to it, but I doubt that’s going to happen again this season

I'm struggling to fully remember the heady heights of last night's match but - genuine question - did he miss an earlier decent chance? Did he fluff a couple really - although not quite as obvious as the Brighton match?

In fairness, certainly starting to perhaps "get in the right area". I think it's perhaps decision making or composure rather than ability. If I were to stick my neck out a gut feeling is he'll be ok -maybe not brilliant but could even get five or six goals in the league by the end of the season. Which will be an ok contribution.

I would leave things as they are. Having Nketia come on off the bench with 20 minutes to go is working well. As you say. At least this way, chances are we keep two good fresh strikers on the boil. That's what having a squad is all about.

Arsenal fan at work said, ‘he’s ok until he’s in front of the goal with the ball’.
In other words for a striker he is absolutely s***.
He can’t believe they managed to offload him.
The only positive is that we could recoup some of the money by selling him to a championship team. As for Franca, well there should be an inquiry into tha.

this sounds like what we were saying about JPM until the last few games of last seasons . what a miss he did yesterday .
