Nketiah?

Ridiculous fee paid for this player.
Clearly hasn’t done much elsewhere.
We’ve been very optimistic over this purchase.

Our most Expensive 15 signings by Tranfermkt in Euros
Our 3 most expensive forwards are Benteke, Nketia, Franca.
Hardly a great list of goalscorers for us.
Nketia is settling into the role as bench/cover for Mateta. To date he has not delivered in the Premier at all on the scoresheet. However he hasn't played many minutes as an up front central striker.
As a winger, I just dont see it. He hasn't got the pace.

I'm pretty sure he will score a few against the upcoming Arsenal games to get his season up and running.

This is spot on

If JPM goes down, I like having him as an option up front. He can't hold up like Mateta, but with Wharton (and today's Hughes) feeding him through-balls, he might be a fine straight-ahead threat. Along with many others, I regularly doubted Edouard's ability to contribute, and Mateta's, too – only to be proven wrong on both counts.

Given the vagaries of evaluating a player's "fit" with a different club, Dougie has earned my faith as a judge of talent. I'm patient.

eddy nketiah i think is a very talented player but he has to be played in the right place to been seen at his best, his close ball control is good and i think his time will come and lot strikers need a season to get used to a new club

Not writing him off yet but this idea that he's a natural goalscorer confuses me. Based on what?

He has 45 goals in 198 career appearances, most of them playing for one of the best clubs in the country. That's an awful record for a top striker.

Never scored more than 10.in a season and half of them came in the EFL cup.

Hope.he proves me wrong just as Mateta did. However, right now I don't see it.

Based on mins/goals. He's to a very good record considering he mostly comes of for a couple of mins here and there

To an extent I’ve bought into the argument that he’s playing in the wrong position, that he should be the central striker etc.

Then I thought more about it and what he’s been asked to do at Palace when played either side of the central striker in a front 3.
The role is a narrow one, being asked to play close to the central striker when on the attack and put pressure on the opposing defence.
He’s not being asked to stay out wide or chase back to cover our full back.

It’s a role he should be more than capable of fulfilling.
Plenty of other Premier League forwards are asked to play across the forward line.
It’s noteworthy that even in Palace’s case we had Ayew whose preferred position was down the middle , yet most of the time with us he took one of the outside positions.

Nketiah looks to be a mobile player and I’m hoping he can be flexible and make a more positive contribution than he has to date.
His performances at Arsenal suggest that he’s a far better player than he’s currently demonstrating, and it’s early days.
He hasn’t had than many starts, has been injured and is new to Glasner’s way of playing.

I’m waiting patiently for his contribution to the team.

So far yesterday it consisted of being caught offside when there was absolutely no need, giving the ball away, twice controlling it further than a lot of players can kick it and getting himself booked, which to be fair was his best contribution to the game.

He isn’t quick, he doesn’t hold the ball up, in fact I’m struggling to find what he actually does well.

Some say he’s a great finisher and desperately needs to play alongside another forward, however we don’t play in that style so he needs to learn to play just behind the striker and start scoring from these positions. As others have said, Mateta fits the mould far better as to how we play with our 3-4-2-1 set up.

It’s an odd purchase and more likely a Freedman than a Glasner influenced buy. When and if Franca gets fit and firing you can see him slotting in just behind Mateta just as Sarr is learning to now so there is another player that could move ahead of Nketiah in the pecking order.

In terms of poor contributions to the team this season the 3 main disappointments have been Kamada, Schlupp and Nketiah although you can understand with Schlupp that time has caught up with him.

In short Nketiah is an expensive conundrum who has so far added nothing more than Edouard did.

Some on here, probably quite rightly are saying we need to give him a chance to prove himself but in my mind he doesn’t fit our style of play and should be moved on. We need another CF in the Mateta mould as cover and that needn’t have cost £23m.

the only chance he'll get is if JP gets injured or goes in the summer. He can't be described as a panic buy cos we've been after him for years, but if we wanted a back-up striker we'd have been better off with someone younger and cheaper. To get into this team he'll have to adapt initially to an unfamiliar position be it wider or deeper than a central striker. For £25 mil he should be able to do that far better than he has done to date. I wouldn't write him off though, he may get a chance when we rotate in cup games and it might suddenly click, he's got ability, so Stockport beware!

Noticed Stockport won comfortably yesterday and they have a striker who's scored 14 goals this season. Dougie?

What we are seeing from Nketiah at Palace is what we’ve seen from his whole career. Not good enough all round as a centre forward to justify a starting place, just like at Arsenal. As a result he will get 15 mins here and there from the bench but no more. Tries hard but just not good enough. No idea why we signed him

a former money record-breaker : Shefki Kuqi. And he didnt break any other records - apart from maybe money-cost per goal.

Nketia. Not impressed with another Arsenal flop. Added to Sanogo and various other tired old men - travelling down the ladder to a quiet retirement. Next for Nketia ? either West Brom/Sunderland or straight to an early retirement.

broadly the recruitment process at Palace is excellent. But statistically, every club gets a few lemons.

Nketiah has played just over 500 mins for us this season (i.e not much more than the equivalent of 5 games).
His minutes were mainly at the beginning of the season when new players were bedding in and the results were poor.
We now look more settled with a strong defensive unit and competitive midfield.

I'd be the first to acknowledge that Nketiah hasn't looked the part so far, bur perhaps it would be fairer to assess him after more game time in a better performing side.
Even his sternest critics would probably admit that he's a better player than he's so far shown.

Can’t help but feel there were a lot of comments like these about Mateta a couple of years ago.
There were and he came good. I think the difference is that Mateta was a raw player without much experience. Nketiah isn’t. He’s well into his career now and while some players do transform later on it is quite rare. There were also lots of comments like this about Gayle, Kuqui, Akinbayi etc who never came good. Time will tell

Last line a complete answer to his critics.

For now.
