Mateta's contract.

As with 99% of this rubbish, I cant believe there is even a thread of truth in it. If we sell JP its going ot be big bucks, not below market rates.

Plus, why on earth would JMP want to join a patchy team, riddled with debt and a potential relegation on the cards.

Well...he joined us. Maybe once bitten, twice shy.

Matheus Cunha had just signed a bumper new contract at Wolves. He’s clearly going to leave but I assume the contract guarantees a release clause and gives him extra money in the meantime.

We should make Mateta our highest earner pronto and get him to sign with a ridiculous release clause. It’s simple, offer him a bumper deal pronto.

Wheres the money coming for that to happen, or are you going to fund it? If you are, thank you & let's get it done.

Ha ha! I wish! Unfortunately I’m skint.

However, if Wolves can find the money for Cunha, I don’t doubt the club can provide money to secure a player who is winning us Premier League games.

I've just read an interview that JPM has given to a French publication.
He says he told the doctor who attended him on the field v Millwall that he wanted to play on.
Surely a case of above and beyond the call of duty!

that was not the same Mateta. Today he is one of the top strikers in the most valuable League in the World.

John, Paul, George & Ringo would have happily played The Fairfield Hall for 50p back in 1963. But not in '64.
True but looking back Lord McCartney might think Wings weren't as good as the Beatles.

I think you have to remember that Mateta was sh1t until the end of last season - and that's putting it mildly. In that case, he was just lucky to get anything from a Premier League club.

I've more been wondering - how does someone improve that dramatically?
It's slightly concerning as if it were a lack of effort or desire - a la Edouard/ Benteke - then he could go back to what he was relatively easily. Which is even more concerning if he's not happy with his contract.
Throughout Benteke's career he thrived on passes,Zaha as a winger was not prolific at crosses, hence without supply Benteke's goal scoring receded.

I keep seeing statements that Palace have put a £40m price tag on his head, which doesn't ring true to me. He still has another two years on his deal so the club are under no pressure to sell and over the last 18 months he has become our key source of goals. Unless the club were confident Nketiah could fill his boots, or they had someone ready to come in, then I think it would take something far more substantial, which I don't see anyone offering given he turns 28 in June. I really hope he wants to stay as he is the kind of player every fan dreams of having at their club. He doesn't have any of that too-cool-for-school vibe that some players have when they score, he celebrates like he has been asked to come and hose down the Brazilian women's volleyball team.

Thats where we go wrong, that lad Pele would have been a great signing in the 60's. Perhaps the Krays wanted some doggy ackers laundering. Excuse me a pig has just landed on my roof.

Well its not simple because he may not want to extend. If he was willing to he might want a release clause inserted that was way lower than Parish was willing to accept. And offering him a 'bumper contract' is also not simple. The club has the wage bill and wage structure to think about. If the club were to suddenly offer him say £150,000 a week do you not think Eze, Lacroix, Munoz, Hughes, Hendo, and any other player that has equal claim to the teams current form wouldn't be banging on Parish's door seeking pay parity? And quite rightly so too. JPM is a fantastic target man but thats all he is. Its Eze, Sarr, Wharton, Hughes that make his chances. Its the back 3/5 that stop them going in the other end.
I'm all for offering JPM a new improved contract but it has to be within the parameters of what the club can afford. My guess is he'll refuse to sign an extension. The lad wants a crack at CL football. We cannot offer him that so if we had a decent offer from Arsenal, Forest or any other top 4/5 club that need a striker I'd bet we'll reluctantly sell.

These are great points. To be clear i am not saying offer him money that will break the club. But he should be offered a deal that reflects the standing he has in the team (ie: the top earner). Wolves acted quickly to get Cunha that contract but you know he's going anyway. You can't argue they haven't acted.

Also, JPM is much more than a target man!!! The goals away to Ipswich and West Ham, both game changing strikes... were almost entirely self made and exquisite finishes. Wharton didn't play in either of those games.

I'd also argue that to find and replace a Prem league goalscorer who has secured so many points for us since Glasner came in, is much harder than any other position.

JPM is an important player for us but he is not the most important and does not imo deserve to be placed as top earner. He would I agree be hard to replace. Hard but not impossible. There are young strikers out there that see Palace right now, see Glasner's ability as a coach, see our team's potential that would love the chance to fill that role.
It would but up to the expertise of Freedman and Glasner to spot the potential. Football is not about sentiment any more. Not sure if it ever was. Players move on. Its life. JPM might move soon. He might stay for another couple of years but with the coaching/recruitment team Palace now have I am confident a decent replacement will be found if that becomes necessary.
I wouldn't be surprised if that replacement hasn't already been identified
