Mateta's contract.

Problem is if he becomes Prem top scorer (or close to it) we'd be selling ourselves short by setting a release clause at £55m. A top club would gladly pay £100m these days for a 20+ goal a season striker

He would however be 30 in the Summer of '27.

Think we'd be pretty happy with 55m for a 30 year old

My guess is if the club offered him 100k per week and a 3 or 4-year deal he'd take it, knowing that if big club came in with a sizeable offer he could still agitate for a move and if not he has security for him and his family in a club that has grown to love him. One thing I would say is that he is not a bench player. If he went to a big club and didn't start most games then I think he'd struggle as he seems like someone who needs to play regularly to stay match fit and sharp. Personally I hope he never leaves.

Agreed on both points. Finding an equivalent striker in the market would be beyond our finances.

Unfortunately, my understanding is that he does want bigger and better things, which at his age (27 and will be 28 in the close season) is understandable. His contract has another 2 years and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go in the Summer for a sizeable fee to one of the bigger clubs who need a proven PL striker which JP has proved himself to be over the past year.

But if you set a release clause of 55m in a new summer contract, he would go immediately. That's what a release clause entails!
I wouldn't be surprised if he goes for something like an Olise clause where he is allowed to leave for 80 million if it is to a team going to be in the Champions league. I imagine several of the 36 clubs would stump that much up for him if he keeps up his form of the past year

If he keeps on doing well for the rest of this season he'll be doing us and himself a huge favor. We'll get goals and he'll get a big money move. I suppose the biggest thing is can we replace him? The seemingly impossible scenario of Nketiah being a striker, or us buying someone.
We've been linked to Diakite for a year or more and you know what we're like. We might get him in the end. Young Ivory Coast striker who plays in France. I think maybe 19.
He doesn't actually have a mad goal scoring record but he's pretty physical and so young that one would hope the only way is up (if we do get him). Highly rated.

Not necessarily. A lot of modern clauses, themselves have lots of clauses e.g. bidding club, certain windows etc. No reason you couldn't bump his wages up to 100k with a release clause that becomes active the following year.

A lot of press in the last 48 hours of Kane's release clause. Apparently was £67m in this window, and reducing to £54m next winter.

But as always the player holds all the cards, why would he want a high release clause, limiting his choice, and why would we want a low release clause, virtually giving him away, offer him 120k a week, 3 year contract, if he says no, sell him in the Summer for the price we want, worst case scenario, we have him for 2 more seasons

According to clickbait(mailonline) Textor is planning to sell JP to Lyon in the summer. I can't put the link up as it's behind a paywall. For those that can it's at the bottom of the home page.
Aren’t Lyon broke? How are they going to pay £50m for a player in those circumstances. In fact outside of PSG pretty much the whole of French football is in dire financial straits as they messed up the sale of Ligue 1 rights and DAZN are now looking at execising a clause in the deal meaning they can pay even less for them.

Yup, they are, BUT, Textor won't sell him for £50m or anything like that, it'll be some ridiculously low price because he owns them as well. I can see Parish, Blitzer & Harris blocking this.

I can also see that Mateta himself won’t want it. Lyon aren’t going to be paying him the £150k a week he’d get by moving to another EPL club.

This is what I think too. He's ideal for the Premier League, or high pressing sides but I wouldn't think Lyon were high on his list. As someone above said, the other shareholders would block it.
I'm still annoyed over O'Brien which was all rather obvious. He's maybe a 30-40 million player now.

Not sure what Textor is up to. Is he:

1. Trying to rob Palace by under pricing JPM (click bait says 35m)?
2. Trying to do Palace a favour and drive up the price that the PL big boys will have to play?
3. just being an idiot?

My guess is that Lyon simply don't have the money and or the French FA will not allow transfers of this sort to increase their debt. Parish and the rest of the board would not sanction a sale for that low a price.

So my guess is that Textor is driving to drive up interest in JPM unlike Parish who doesn't advertise our best players are for sale.

Or possibly also
4. Sell JP to Lyon for a measly sum + some crappy player/s, which would then get said player/s some Prem experience and increased value, with Lyon benefiting from a % of any sell-on fees.

As I’ve said he can have all the plans he wants for JPM but JPM himself has to be on board. This isn’t like US sports where players can be traded against their will if the receiving team picks up the contract obligations (see Luka Doncic). JPM is going to want big wages from his next move and Lyon won’t be able to pay them so I expect it is a “no” from JPM and that’s the end of that.
