Is Glasner the problem?

This actually might be the defining game, against Spurs, in terms of evaluating Glasner's real coaching capacity and if we should stick or twist?

1) what will be his player selection and the set-up deployed against a well understood Angeball style - as someone pointed out earlier in the thread, Spurs rely on a quick midfield transition and a high backline. Our midfield set up will have to be structured just right to prevent them running all over and through us.

2) his in game tactics and substitutions - this season he has thrown the kitchen sink in a "Hail Mary pass" approach to get a goal when we go behind, it has not worked. Should we get lucky and be on a draw after 75mins , the best coach on the day might prevail via their change of set up and choice of subs. I accept that they have a better bench than we do in that scenario.

We shall see..... I am optimistic he can turn it around, but the runway is very short and Jose is waiting in the wings 🤣🤣🤣
 
Watched the press conference.

Just get Wharton an op now. Unfit he will either do himself or the team more harm than good. Do it now and he can be well on his way back after yet another pointless international break.

I lost a bit of respect for OG when he spoke about Kamada. I get the manager has to defend his players and in this case even more so it was his first and preferred pick in the transfer window. But to say he’s settled in well etc etc. Utter bollocks. He is light weight and looks utterly lost. If this is him settled then f@ck me this is a bad bad signing. He could have said he was still finding his feet but to say he played well… that’s taken us all for mugs. The young kid that came on showed more promise.

Bit baffled now.

Being able to absolutely guarantee a lack of European football might be our ace in the hole. Unless it's Pep's dream to manage a team containing an as yet ineffectual Japanese midfield player.

I think its easy for any of us to sit back and say he's crap, he's not worth what we paid and so on. In a few weeks time Nketiah may well have scored 3 or 4 goals and we are all saying how promising he is. Sarr might start tearing it up down the wing. We do need a left back/left wing back but it wasn't for lack of trying to sign one in the summer. It looked likely at one point that Sessignon was ours. Only for him to walk away and join Fulham instead.

I dont think we can really judge any of the new signings at least until Christmas. Lets not forget many Palace fans were convinced Andrew Johnson was crap and just a rubbish makeweight in the Morrison deal until a couple of months down the line when he started banging them in.

There won't be much to judge by Christmas,we will be rank bottom looking at the way the team is playing!!
 
Going back to the root question: is Glasner the problem.

He is if:

He refuses to acknowledge that the players we currently have available are not suited to the preferred system he wishes to play.

He refuses to acknowledge that Kamada, no matter what he saw at other clubs in other leagues is just not cutting it for us for whatever reason.

He refuses to send Wharton for surgery which he clearly needs. It’s not going to heal on its own. It’s been all season so far.


We are almost into November. This is not early season anymore, we are into the meat of the grinder now, if we don’t get going we will be cut adrift and fighting for survival. I still maintain that Parish and co will simply not allow this and install moyes or similar to stabilise (rinse and repeat previous cycles).

I want OG to succeed. I think reality is well and truly back in play now following the euphoric summer where I genuinely thought we would fend off offers, keep our players and do a villa… ah reality, what a bummer.

I can now except I am a palace fan and sadly this is our lot, lower mid table with the occasional amazing result. OG still has a bit of credit (with me anyway) for the end of last season but I do fear he is ignoring things we can all see as clear as day and not just us fans, pundits and reporters alike have picked up on our problems.

What I will say is he did say he wanted more from the window including an attacking left wingback. So a huge chunk of this is on the book balancers at board level and waiting until the very last minute to do our business… again.
 
We've endeavoured to replace Olise with a combination of 3 players , 2 of them Freedman's choices in long term targets Sarr and Nketiah , and one of them in Glasner's choice in Kamada.

In fairness it would be impossible to replace Olise like for like, but even allowing for that the new players seened to have had the effect of unbalancing our team, particularly down our right hand side.

Probably the closest we had in style to Olise was already on our books in Rak Saki, as he to is a left footed player who prefers to cut in from the right and has an eye for goal.
One assumes he's not deemed to be ready for Premier League and of course there's no guarantee that he ever will be.

As we haven't managed to replace Olise it seems futile to pretend that he's still there and play the same system.
Adapt the system or continue to fail.
 
If you were to be really cynical you could argue that the one thing Glasner did last season was get the team fit. Under Roy we kept dropping points in the final minutes of games because the team ran out of steam. Due to various factors the squad does not look at the same peak of fitness this season and on Monday night Sky pointed out we have the lowest pressing stats. Our passing success rate is also one of the lowest in the PL. So we're not forcing mistakes and we can't keep the ball. Our shots per game stat is also misleading as so few are actually clear chances and many are from outside the box. I really like Glasner and want him to succeed but I just don't see signs of where the change is going to come from.

I don't think it would be imposible to buy a quality Olise clone if you spent the money, Amad Diallo as willow said, Mbeumo from Brentford, Maduke, before the season started, Neto, Soule, their were options, if you add up what we got for Olise and Johnstone, and not bought Sarr, Nketieh, Kamada and only one of Riad or Lacroix, we would have enough to offer 50/60m for one of them players and saved about 150k in wages, if it wasn't broken don't fix it

Mbeumo and Madueke were out of range. Neto signed for Chelsea for a fee which could rise to nigh on £55 Mill.
Players of such quality have no interest in joining clubs of our stature.We have to be realistic.

Being very cynical this situation raises the question, not just in our case but others where managers stick rigidly to a certain style, is it deliberate? If a manager wants to get out of a contract they just need to lose a few games to get away.

I am not gallivanting down the path of apportioning blame to any party.

In the final analysis,when results and performances are disappointing and teams are in the relegation zone, getting cut adrift and in danger of remaining 'Below the line' , 'Boards' start to consider the position of the manager.

Unfortunately you are correct my friend, however problems really predate OG, we have suffered for a long time now in the final third, lack of conversion to goal scoring chances created per game is our nemeses. We also have an unusual talent for recruiting crocks (Franca as an example £20mil, wasted so far!). We also make last minute signings in transfer windows and lack proper preparation pre season because we never know until the last minute who is coming in. Other clubs who are very much like us but are more succesful in this league have usually achieved this through harmoney in the boardroom and until we can solve that I do not think we can really expect to go forward. It really is quite simple if you can't score goals then you can't win football matches.

I am trying to think of managers who actually adjust their tactics in any significant way on a regular basis? Is it just that teams eventually find out how to counter them? Spurs, for example, stormed the league at the start of last season before teams learned how to exploit it. Spurs then sign more players that fit the Ange system and they're going strong again. He never changed his tactics even when they were struggling. Glasner's comments in the presser that he respected AP sticking to his tactics and principles is probably a message that we're not going to see any major overhaul in tactics.
