Crystal Palace vs. Nottingham Forest match thread

clearly a great 3 points, but you are 100% right, there was so many issues with that performance that on another day we would have lost comfortably (and would have been 2-0 down but for the miss of the season by Delap).

The back 3 appear like they have never played together and other than Canvot are too slow. They got little support from either CM and Forest were just walking through us in the first half.

Not sure what the plan was for marking Munoz, but it clearly didn't work as the guy was never picked up when he came forward (and missed a good chance at 1-0).

Set piece defending was a concern too and we never adjusted when Forest kept overloading the back post - just after half time Canvot knocked one onto the post, so that could have been the equaliser.

Great finish by Kamada but he gave the ball away cheaply almost all afternoon, such a frustrating player.

Sage still has a lot of work to do IMHO
The thing that annoyed me the most was Forest had three corners in quick succession and the ball was knocked to the back post every time and on each occasion the Forest player had a free header.

You would hope that at this level it would have been spotted by the players and an adjustment made however we appear to be rigidly system led which looked a real mess first half and it was a surprise to not be 3 down at the break. Thankfully we are better going forward than defensively and scored more than them!

Thought we were very fortunate.

I think we're in for an entertaining season - our defending is absolutely comical but we carry a real threat in attack. Not expecting many more 0-0s.

How on earth did we pick up Timber for £15m in this market!? Fantastic player.

That is the concern for me. Our early success under Glasner was built on a strong unified defence. Perhaps the 2 out through injury/suspension will help once they have settled back in.

Doesn’t help at all not having a settled back 3 but for me the bigger issue is Khalaili? He is so far forward that leaves the right sided central defender covering. Yesterday it was Lerma who did play well but got caught out covering Khalaili lots of times. Meant there was huge gaps in the middle 3 as well, especially when they pull over together and the ball is knocked over them to the far post. Mitchell on the other hand gets back quicker but again it’s a struggle. For this system to work all the team need to work together and not give the ball away so easily as was happening in the first half. Certainly a work in progress but we got away with it yesterday and against Fulham. I don’t see Brighton being so wasteful and therefore we need a Leeds performance by our team?

Tomiyasu and Disasi have to play in preference to Canvot and Lerma, if fit. Canvot and Honest are both going to be great players but right now, we need a lot of experienced Premiership players at the back.

One could argue that we were fortunate to win both this game and the Fulham game. So our points haul and league position are somewhat flattering. Things need to improve in defence quickly.
One could also argue that the ability to win games when not playing particularly well is a very encouraging sign. The defence needs work, true, but when it comes together we will pick up plenty of points.

Could have easily been 3 down, which is such a shame considering how slick we looked offensively. It feels like we could have something very special, if we can sort out things a the back. Goals win games, and conversely, conceding goals out of nothing are punches to the gut. So many of the defensive issues seam so basic they must be fixable....surely.....

A couple of examples yesterday that I felt looked weak in real time, and then confirmed on the highlights.
First up the goal. Thats a mad place on the pitch to be attempting a pass back, especially one that was so readable. But is Lerma too high? If he was another 10 yards deeper that ball is nodded back to him. Or did he come to potentially win the ball and Khalaili took it?

2nd example, ball sent up to Wood. Canvot comes inside to try to win it

And leaves Richards stuck underneath. Wood then winsthe flick on and Ndoye is through, with Richards ultimately doing well to catch up.

Last example, crossing position, Wood the only danger. Canvot not in the best position, but still touch tight.

2 secs later and he's completely free.

Very simple baseball bat around the head ever time they make schoolboy errors . these are senior professional footballers . who wouldn't or shouldn't need to be re-taught the basics of defending

I think that's a fair point, but I can't see us getting a settled defence for some time.
We're playing every few days in October and there will be rotation.
Furthermore, Disasi will soon be available after suspension and Tomiyasu fit again meaning more changes.
The days of arriving at a game and knowing precisely who would make up the back 3 are over, at least in the near term.
Probably true, we’ve just got to hope we can carry on riding our luck and carry on looking like we can score goals ourselves and hopefully out score the other team if we are a shambles at the back
At least the Leeds game gave us a glimmer of hope that we can look reasonably organised at the back

If you get the chance to watch that Leeds game again you’ll see that the wing backs played far closer to their nearest CH. As a result we looked far more solid defensively.

For this reason this is possibly a Sage instruction and perhaps his fault that we were so open because both Mitchell and Khalaili were far more advanced yesterday. Maybe at home he is asking them to be further forward to put pressure on the Forest backs but it did cause us problems. I did see Lerma looking at Khalaili and I think he was trying to get him to drop back a bit but he was too far away to hear him😂

One could equally argue that we were unlucky not to have won the Ipswich and Leeds games and should have had a draw at Everton. As I see it we have the number of points we deserve to have at this stage.

We don't seem to gain any attacking advantage by playing up from the back. We tend to end up playing the ball sideways and backwards in or near our box. We were better when Benitez kicked the ball upfield for us to attack. I said that even when Hendo was in goal.

Two more points.
1. Mitchell's shot from distance was unlikely to go in but would have been a screamer if it had.
2. The build up to the first goal was beautiful.

The thing that concerns me about Khalili is not so much the glaring error for the goal (a bad split second decision that got punished) but the number of times he dived in and didn’t get the ball. I think two or three times their player skipped past his challenge with ease and had a free run in behind. Some of his challenges were good, but several were not. Other teams will punish this.

I agree.
He looks like an attacking player being pressed into a role he's uncomfortable with.
He doesn't seem to understand defensive positioning and is easy to beat one on one.

That is standard wing back . Most of the time you do a holding position and not tackle , tackling is a last resort , stopping them making a cross or attacking pass is your main weapon , so he just needs to learn when its right to do one or the other , that comes down to the others telling him . If no one shouts then its your call but he needs to trust his pace

I must admit to making an error on my analysis of the alleged handball by Khalaili. In the Rules the only reason for disallowing a goal after the ball hits an arm in a natural position is if it goes into or leads to the goal. Having seen replays I think we dodged one there. Anyway we deserve some luck and Darren England owes us at least one for stitching us up so many times. Mea Maxima Culpa!
None of the experts pointed out that if our goal had been disallowed then we should have had a penalty for the blatant shove by the keeper on Canvot as the ball came in.
