Crystal Palace vs. Nottingham Forest match thread

Lerma can’t be any deeper there or else he’s playing everyone onside with a huge gap between him and the next defender in the line. He’s right where he should be.

It was just a poor choice from Khalaili. It happens, and he did well not to let his head drop.
What are you talking about? The other 2 CBs are deeper than Lerma in that shot......

This is it really, even in the Prem players make mistakes, especially ones settling into new leagues. You have to just hope the fatal mistake doesn't result in a goal. This time it did. We made a few more that didn't. If we had gone on to lose 1-0 we'd have let that mistake dominate discussion but thankfully we recovered and won.

You'd expect Khalaili to get better along with the rest of the defensive shape. I don't feel like the start point is so terrible that we need to wet the bed yet. Of course, Guehi and Lacroix made me feel a lot less nervous but I still think we'll improve defensively from here.

I detest zonal marking
Me too. It leads to too many mismatches - why not let the defender mark the opposition player he's best suited to. Suspect it's also a problem for us because communication isn't great among the defence but it could also indicate we have a lack of pace which isn't as exposed with this system.

As above: if we were zonal marking then we left one or two zones free. So that didn't work.

Having 3 slow, lumbering centre halves play a higher line is asking for trouble. Having 3 slow, lumbering centre halves play out from the back is also asking for trouble. Given that Sage is fixated with both things aren't going to change as the players involved are not technically good enough to do what he has in mind.

I reached the same conclusion .
Match of the Day highlighted how we leave 3 to defend against 3 attackers with the full backs pushed up.
It leaves us very exposed on occasions.
We may have got away with it with Lacroix and Guehi who both have pace and are good one on one defenders, but we’re not in that situation now.
Mitchell and Tomiyasu are probably our best one on one defenders, but Mitchell does not play centrally and Tomiyasu is frequently unavailable.
We haven’t seen enough of Disasi and Ahanor to form a judgement if they defend better down the middle.

I agree, they're not that positionally aware either. We'll have to outscore the opposition. I guess at least that's fun.

It doesn’t help we haven’t had a settled defence, it’s different every game so far and it was always going to be a struggle losing two of the best defenders in the league

We started really lively, but the mistake and the conceded goal seemed to really impact both teams. Likewise, when we equalised, suddenly Forest looked all over the place, and we subsequently scored again. I guess that's a reflection of the fairly shaky starts both teams have made to their respective seasons and the impact that has on confidence. It's hard to believe that Brighton's forward line will be as ineffective as Forest's, so we need to see a huge improvement by next weekend.

As an aside, it does increasingly look like it was us who got the best deal in selling Munoz given the money and his age. He got in a couple of good positions but was wasteful, and at the back I don't remember him winning a challenge, did he? He looks a shadow of the player he was with us prior to his injury.

Stop it, no sensible comments.

Err, Back 4?

I think that's a fair point, but I can't see us getting a settled defence for some time.
We're playing every few days in October and there will be rotation.
Furthermore, Disasi will soon be available after suspension and Tomiyasu fit again meaning more changes.
The days of arriving at a game and knowing precisely who would make up the back 3 are over, at least in the near term.

clearly a great 3 points, but you are 100% right, there was so many issues with that performance that on another day we would have lost comfortably (and would have been 2-0 down but for the miss of the season by Delap).

The back 3 appear like they have never played together and other than Canvot are too slow. They got little support from either CM and Forest were just walking through us in the first half.

Not sure what the plan was for marking Munoz, but it clearly didn't work as the guy was never picked up when he came forward (and missed a good chance at 1-0).

Set piece defending was a concern too and we never adjusted when Forest kept overloading the back post - just after half time Canvot knocked one onto the post, so that could have been the equaliser.

Great finish by Kamada but he gave the ball away cheaply almost all afternoon, such a frustrating player.

Sage still has a lot of work to do IMHO

One could argue that we were fortunate to win both this game and the Fulham game. So our points haul and league position are somewhat flattering. Things need to improve in defence quickly.
