Crystal Palace vs. Newcastle match thread

This is controversial but I think I'm open to selling Eze. Obviously when he's in form he's our best player but he thrived the most under Hodgson and his unplayable spells are too infrequent given his injury record and the time it takes him to recover each time.

I say this with full acknowledgement that if he destroys Ipswich I'll be calling for him to get a new contract on 250k a week to tie him down.
This is also a reason a "top" team won't come in for him and he belongs at a team like Palace.

Eddie Howe says Newcastle should have won the game.
LOL
I haven't seen the clip, but I can't argue with his logic. He didn't say they deserved it, or that they were the better team, or that they outplayed us.

He meant, without saying it, that Pope had a tremendous game, and Munoz's goal should never have gone past him. I'm sure Pope would agree. Thus, in Howes' mind, the Toons "should have" finished out the game.

Yeah, a bit like we should have seen the game out twice against Villa.

Newcastle were awful yesterday, the ‘England’ left side of Hall and Willock did nothing and Gordon was pretty muted. Harvey Barnes is an annoying little shite and always plays well against us, but generally they offered very little. We have to start taking 3 points off teams that play that poorly, so whilst I was delighted with the equaliser it was still 2 points lost imo.

I only saw the last half hour, but I have to say there seems to be a bit more mongrel (as they like to say here) in this team. They are starting to gel. Newcastle looked very average with no cutting edge. At least we got some shots in, although we are way off last years late form. There are signs for optimism without doubt. And I loved the way OG sprinted to the corner to celebrate the goal.

He also said if they hadn't conceded than it would've been a brilliant away performance!!
I doubt the Geordies will be fooled, neither those that were there or those that read the stats of 16-1 in favour of the team that was 19th!!

A few observations:
  • Lacroix was excellent again today. Best pickup by far in the summer. Has pace and guile.
  • Chalobah makes silly mistakes every game. That blind pass he made in the middle 25 yards out from our goal was so fortunate not to be punished.
  • Eze looked off the pace. Kept dribbling into three players again.
  • Sarr is growing on me, so much better these past few weeks.
  • Nketiah is a disappointment. I really am hoping he comes good, but I struggle to see where it'll come from.
  • Every time Mitchell has a throw in, I feel like we give it straight back. Felt the same way with PVA when he was in the team. He needs to be upgraded or at least have some competition.
  • Please don't allow Kamada anywhere near the starting team again. Devenny is much better, even though he turned into trouble with his first few touches today.
  • Schluppy almost looks funny out there. He's so much bigger than anyone on the pitch.
Overall I thought we played very well. Was a tough goal to concede, and I had almost no faith we would score when they were wasting time, but happy to be proven wrong.

He's trying to keep his job. You always get the feeling a big name will appear as they're not going to win anything. They still won't with a big name.
For all their sports washing money they still have a really odd looking squad. On the one hand some outstanding players like Guimares who’d walk into most teams on the planet. Then there are your Dan Burn type who, excellent pro though he is, look like they’d be at home in the Championship

Yes someone actually said near us, remember Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth? Same niggly tactics, feigning injury to slow the game down
If you sit in the Lower Holmesdale, that would have been me !

Howe's teams have always been practised in the ' Dark Arts '

Well ultimately that was a draw that felt like a win given the timing of our goal.

As a game it was decidedly average. For all Newcastles expenditure, they look like they are going backwards. Not close to the team that qualified for the CL a couple of years ago.

I thought Palace were well worth the point. More clinical finishing and it could have been all three.

To be fair to the Geordies I had a little look on their supporters website last night and not a single one of them was angry at conceding a goal so late.
They all seemed to agree that they deserved nothing from the game as they were so poor. They're definitely not happy with Howe.

Agree, the only think I'd say in TM's defence re throw ons, is that JMP doesn't make himself available. He had 2 in the first half, deep in our half and JPM was 40 yards away, making his only option really to go short to players aggressively marked.

Indeed.
We gained a point more than I expected.
When Munoz scored I was so elated I almost raised my buttocks off my seat.

Had I been capable I'd have done a triple Salchow followed by a double back flip in the tucked pike position and several cartwheels.

I said earlier it was strange, it seemed a dour fairly even game, but when I got home and see the stats it looked like we battered them really, despite clearly having more chances it didn’t feel like it at the game. I suppose our chances, apart from Munoz open net were all a bit half chance, huff and puff sort of thing

At the game I was getting a little frustrated with periods of the game. Didn't feel like we had control in parts, and when we did, were lacking movement and struggling to generate many chances.

However, with the benefit of hindsight, maybe it was a better all round performance than I thought. We didn't make many chances, but had a couple of clear cut and a couple of half chances. They however mustered not a single shot in 90 minutes.

For context they had 18 against West Ham, 17 against Forrest, 9 against Arsenal, 8 against Chelsea.

Throw ins have come up before and you'd have thought that of almost anything in the game a long throw is a learnable skill and can be a very useful weapon. Have we really not got anyone capable of doing it?

Another was where JP had the ball at his feet two yards out but blasted it over. In fact we had three clear cut chances from corners.
