Crystal Palace vs. Newcastle match thread

Thank God we got something! Newcastle were awful and it would of really stung had they walked away with all 3 points..

It's still doesn't deflect how much we're struggling though. Ipswich is a massive game on Tuesday. I'm sorry but looking at our form and league position nothing but a win will do.

We should have won, we played pretty well mostly. Finishing an obvious weakness today.
We need, need to beat Ipswich now and go on a run.
There were at least two incredible misses for us in that game. The proverbial "easier to score than miss" chances. Typical us.

How we did we not beat them? You can't blame Glasner for players missing so many chances, but at least we got a point. Newcastle were awful though. They had a host of multi-million pound forwards on the pitch and didn't muster a single shot on target. They were celebrating tackles like they were playing Real Madrid in the CL final. It was embarrassing stuff. The ref bought their play-acting but today was really about our poor finishing. Respect to Guehi and Munoz who were clearly desperate to make amends. Roll on Ipswich.

That’s a relief.

It’s also justice for their over the top time wasting. I’m never sure why players time waste in or near injury time. I cheered when Callum Wilson was booked for it in the 90 min knowing that although he thought he stole 30 secs, the reality is the ref will add on at least an extra minute for it. What a numpty. Fine details….

If I was a manger I’d be livid with such time wasting. Play the time out and never give the ref an excuse to add on double. Great for us today though..

Relieved to have got a point but Newcastle were utterly crap and deserved nothing from that game.

We have to do better in front of goal

Good to get a point at the death but honestly it didn’t look much better than before. Still a team that is lacking confidence, fluidity and is a soft touch in defence. The same things we’ve seen all season and the things a manager is paid to deal with. If we lose to Ipswich I think OG has got to go.

Celebrating a late equaliser to gain a point like winning a cup, well ok. It's not enough but hopefully this marks the beginning of an improvement, heightens confidence levels, and draws a line in the sand that recognises that which has gone is gone, and everything from now on is up for grabs.
There's plenty of work to do across the board.

I personally thought it was a much better performance, plenty of effort, heads didn't go down, 15 shots to their 1, everyone knows i am not Glasners best Fan, but i thought it was one of his best performances, it was justice that we got a point, should have won, but after watching that game i feel a lot more comfortable about survival

I might change that to ‘if we fail to beat Ipswich’.

Sporadic draws just aren’t good enough nor enough to survive.

1) Maybe I'm in the minority, but our defense was strong throughout the match.
2) Hughes, who played one of his best games ever, suffered a fatal lapse of concentration on the free kick that led to the goal.
3) Our attack wasn't brilliant, but Eze was rusty and Newcastle worked hard to prevent him from touching the ball. When Devenny came on, it was clear that the game opened up because we were no longer looking to pass to a man who wasn't open.
4) Mitchell is a strength in defense, a weakness in attack. If we find a better attacking WB, he'll be worse in defense.
5) We miss Wharton terribly. He'll make us even more dangerous now that Saar is playing well.
6) I love Munoz because of his fitness, two-way effort, and spirit. I don't like his occasional macho fouls, but as they say, I'd gladly go to war with an all-Munoz squad.
7) On Tuesday, Glasner may have hard time deciding how long to play Ebs. He might consider starting Devenny and bringing on Ebs in the second half, to earn fouls when Ipswich tire, and to be available for free kicks late in the match.
8) I will say nothing about Nketiah. Or Schlupp.

Give that Leicester, Ipswich and Wolves all lost, a point is a decent result against that lot. They didn't have a sniff and it wasn't for that unfortunate own goal, we'd have won.

Tuesday's game against Ipswich is absolutely vital now, isn't it?

The same night it's Leicester vs. West Ham, Everton vs. Wolves and Southampton vs. Chelsea. Win that one and we should have well clear of Ipswich and Southampton at a minimum.

Edit: Also, not to overspin it but we've only lost one of our last six now in all comps. Beating Spurs and Villa, drawing against Wolves, Villa and Newcastle isn't the absolute worst form going.

Everyone agrees Mitchell lacks confidence and ability (particularly crossing) going forward but is good in defence.

Glasner is no fool and has already said we need ‘cover’ for Mitchell in Jan. I think a good wing-back signing on the left will actually benefit Mitchell as there’s currently a lot on his shoulders and he seems like a nice quiet, humble lad who could do with a helping hand and maybe even a break from time to time.

I would temper point 1) by saying we still struggle against set pieces. If you get chance to see the match again, watch Burn and you will see he finds a lot of space on numerous occasions. Thankfully, the ball didn’t make it to him.

I agree about Mitchell but I’ve always said that if you play with three at the back then the wing backs are the most important positions on the pitch and I would have spent the money we wasted on Nketiah buying the best available. The best available in that position are good both defensively and offensively.

Everything else, spot on.

Great cross from Guehi and brilliant header from Munoz for our goal. Fully deserved something out of that game but feel we would’ve won it had Munoz taken his earlier chance.

Mitchell still poor. Got roasted three or four time in the first half alone plus his distribution and crossing is appalling.

Hughes good and Sarr still improving. Lacroix excellent, Chalobah still making unforced errors, thankfully today they didn’t cost us. JPM working hard and is surely due another goal or two soon. Good to see Devenny was our first substitution and thought he did well when he cam on, unlike Eddie who struggled to get into the game at all.

Tuesday is going to be very tough at Ipswich but if we can get a result there it will be huge for us.
