Crystal Palace vs. Newcastle match thread

Throw ins have come up before and you'd have thought that of almost anything in the game a long throw is a learnable skill and can be a very useful weapon. Have we really not got anyone capable of doing it?
Jeff Lerma has a useful long throw in, not Delap length but useful enough.

In some ways yesterday was a microcosm of our season.
Not a bad performance, but lacking in the final third and a few missed chances.

Where I disagree with other posters is that I don't think we've just been unlucky and it's all going to suddenly click.

I can't prove it, but I rather suspect if Olise was still with us he would now be on 4 or 5 goals and 3 or 4 assists and Eze would have Mateta would have both got another goal or two.
That's a lot of goals which would probably have us comfortably in mid table.

Olise's replacements ( a combination of Kamada, Nketiah and Sarr) have made scant contribution in goals and assists.
They may improve in this regard, but it's doubtful to the level of Olise's contribution.

Until we go some way to replacing Olise's output I believe we may struggle to win tight games.

I'm hoping Wharton's return will assist our forwards and believe we need another attacking player in January who will make an immediate contribtion in goals and assists.

You are right about Olise. Look at Glasner’s record for us without him. It is absolutely dreadful

As you know, this means nothing.
Keep to the present and future. We have turned the corner and Glasner I think is starting to realise the value (or not) of our new players.
If he resorts back to Kamada and Nketia as bolt on starters we will be in serious trouble as we were before. Hopefully we are over that hurdle.
Devenny is a real find with very good tactical awareness.
But most importantly our players are starting to believe again and picking up points against tough opposition.
The Ipswich game is huge. Win that and we will make a big step forward.
But the biggest step we have to wait for which will resolve everything, is the return of a fit Wharton.
It was Wharton's arrival last season that set us on the road to recovery, not Olise.
Obviously Olise was good when he returned but mainly due to Whartons presence and his superb through balls.
Everyone seems to be ignoring this fact. Wharton is our star by a long way and when he returns, before he goes, he will drag us up the table. He is a rare talent who I believe will go a long way in the game.

Wharton was certainly a big factor but you can’t look past the points, goals and performances with a fit Olise vs without. He was very clearly a massive difference. As I say just look at Glasner’s record with and without him. It tells a pretty clear story

And before Olise we relied on Zaha to carry the team.

Those players are unique talents and difficult to replace on a like for like basis.

Of course we miss Olise. We also miss the Eze of last season. And the Wharton of last season. No wonder it's been a struggle.

Slowly we are building a platform. But we need to turn draws like yesterday into wins. Strengthening the squad in January will hopefully facilitate this.

Another was where JP had the ball at his feet two yards out but blasted it over. In fact we had three clear cut chances from corners.

Yes from my seat in the Whitehorse sometimes it’s hard to see up the other end how clear chances were, we thought Munoz had hit the post, but it was a great block by the defender.

Suffice to say, my days of sexual encounters are in the dim and distant past.🙂

I hope mrs Willo is the same😳

Have you still got a milkman? 🤣

My dear wife has mentioned that she likes her "Red top", I assumed she was referring to her garment but I am now considering the possibility that my assumption is awry.

If she says she likes it thick and creamy as well then you have got a problem

In writing my post, I am looking at the 'present and the future.'

Olise has gone, that ship has sailed, but we haven't managed to replace his goals and assists.
Of course he's very difficult to replace , but haven't even come close to date with the players brought in to soften the blow of his departure.

Like you, I believe that an in form and fit Wharton can make a difference and prompt better performances from our attacking players.
But I still feel we will need to strengthen in January to address the shortfall of goals and assists.

Couldn't agree more. Wharton is the most important and missing cog. His influence on the team cannot be understated.

We deserved at least a draw yesterday and got it thanks to lots of effort.

Munoz's miss with an open goal was gobsmacking but he was brilliant yesterday and ultimately got his reward. Guhei and Hughes also had a very good game.
Eze is still underperforming but Devenney looks like a real gem. Hopefully Glasner will keep Kamada out of the reckoning when he is available because he is part of the problem.

We are still very poor at finishing and that is the difference between bottom and mid table. That has to change. I don't get why we spent so much on someone as average as Nketiah. He has to do better. We have to spend in the window because our squad cannot cope with multiple injuries and we obviously don't have enough firepower.
