Crystal Palace vs Newcastle match thread

Some prat behind me did nothing but slag off Palace the whole game through. Kept shouting shoot, when we passed it around then slagged them off when we shot instead of passed it.

I was really hoping that someone would chin him. Bloke has been there for years. A few years ago I did grab him by the lapels (out of sheer frustration) but getting a bit old for that nowadays. Also, I’m worried that my grandson would grass me up to my Mrs if I took the law into my own hands !

Why can’t some of these prats get behind our team ?

Rant over…..

For their only joy in life is to grumble about something – usually about something they claim is most important to them. Don’t let it ruffle your feathers; they’re poor souls, and you come across them all over the world when you watch football. We used to smile at them because we thought it was a shame to spend money and time getting worked up on a regular basis every week. But perhaps it saves them a trip to the psychiatrist – I don’t know enough about that to be able to judge.

Marvellous victory after being 1-0 down with 10 minutes of normal time remaining.
The substitutes made an appreciable difference, particularly Mateta who looked far removed from the player we have seen in recent months. Credit where credit is due.
Alas, some of the players who were removed from the action were somewhat underwhelming.
I left the ground with my ageing face wreathed in merriment !

Could anyone tell? And take the missus out for a tipple.

I have been known to being vocal and vociferous over the years, flying into a frightful bate and engaging in contretemps with fellow supporters (Not in recent years !) but I have NO recollection of being grabbed by the lapels ! 🤣

If only we had defended properly for the last five minutes before half time against Burnley! Palace would have been 11th 3 points off 6th with a game in hand albeit Manchester City.

Let’s face it, we were hopeless until he brought the so called big guns on, at least when JP comes on as a sub he looks a bit more lively, energetic and interested
Just shows, despite spending £85 million in January, we can’t be making too many changes because we still haven’t got the strength in depth, but I can’t blame Glasner for making them after playing Thursday night

This was the only downer for me today. It brought back those fears that many had at the time, why did we spend so much on just two fairly average players. It could have been put to so much better use.

JSL I do think will end up doing ok for us (as well he should for 50m) but with every minute that Johnson plays he just looks utterly anonymous. It's not that he does anything terribly bad but that's mainly because he is rarely anywhere near the ball!

Pino thank goodness though is working his way back into some form and at least always tries to make things happen.

With the fixtures we have and Europe, I think it could be much closer than some might think. Another win next week would be a comfort. Results wouldn't have to be too crazy to put us 18th.

In order for us to finish 18th we would have to lose every league game remaining and at best our GD not change (stay -1). Then Spurs would have to win every remaining game (6 and they are an ugly final run) with a goal differential of at least +11. It's mathematically possible I guess but not really likely. Even if we fall off Spurs look to have given up.

Or win our game in hand and we are 3 points off 6th . Suppose it depends how you look at it , I'm a looking up sort of person .We seem to have our collective edge back that we saw during our long unbeaten run (defeat to West Ham coming up) and am confident of a top half finish .
I am not predicting relegation. I am simply illustrating the possibility.

Crazy to think how many they had in that stadium back in the day.

Modern era though spurs or West ham will smash the record.
Reckon Newcastle will hold the modern Championship record?
The record for The Valley was over 80,000. Most of them were on the terrace behind the goal.I once climbed up there before a Palace game and it was so steep it was scary. Of course our former ‘home’ Crystal Palace used to have 113,000 for FA Cup Finals.

I have explained what needs to happen earlier in the thread.

Relax. Spurs would have to have a remarkable change of form. If all the teams below win their next two and we lose them, then we can get a tad nervous.

Bit of a smash and grab, but boy will we take it.

Defense solid...hardly gave them a sniff and their goal was their only real attacking threat all game. That's aided massively by the solidity of Hughes and Lerma in front of them. Of course, you then sacrifice a bit of creative endeavour...which Wharton added when he came on. Wharton and Hughes remains the best pairing, but of course, Glasner sees it differently.

Canvot is a star in the making. Great buy.

Johnson annonymous. What a shame. What a desperate, silly purchase he was.

I simply cannot like Mateta now after so vocally thinking he's too good for us and wanting away. I feel nothing but contempt now every time I look at him. Here for the good times...anonymous in the bad. He can do one. But I'll take the goals.

Ultimately, a great three points and possible cemented Howe's sacking. Which could be interesting for us...

Just because the goals came late I didn't feel we were fortunate to win.
We edged a poor game having hit the bar, forced a couple of good saves and missed a couple of chances.
In contrast I don't think Henderson had a serious save to make and Newcastle were in general unimpressive.
I'd liked us to have moved the ball with more pace and purpose in the, but this has been a common observation in our home games this season.

Unsurprisingly we look better with the likes of Sarr, Wharton, Kamada and an in form Mateta in the team.
Frankly the alternatives don't possess the same threats to the opposition.

I was very surprised at Newcastle performance. I expected a lot more from them and they looked like the team that last played 3 days ago not 3 weeks ago.

I never thought we would Boom again but 3 booms this week has been great! 😄

Sarr and Mateta make the notable difference.

I agree. Newcastle are just not very good and seem to have gone backwards this season.

Canvot impressed, he seems full of beans, confident to take things on without fear.
Most notable was the celebration after Mateta's winner, the players look genuinely happy, always a good sign.

12 points clear of the relegation zone, game in hand, 10 superior goal difference, won 3 in a row, lost one of our last ten... I'm not gonna lose sleep over it.

Think we should be looking at the teams in 6th - 9th rather than worrying about Spurs.
