Crystal Palace vs Newcastle match thread

We have averaged 1.35 points per game so far this season. We are currently on the up re our form.
So 1.35 x 7 games = 9 points.
Discount it by say 20% = say 7 points, to allow for some tougher than average opposition (Man City and Arsenal).
I would guess OG is targeting north of 50 points. Totally realistic.
I am not expecting us to reach a points tally which starts with a '5'.

Back on topic of yesterday's game ; if we thought we had problems they are nothing compared to Newcastle's. The expectation level at that club is really high and Howe and his players are falling well short in meeting it. He's looking increasingly like the Eddie Howe immediately pre Bournemouth's relegation - can't find solutions to their problems.

As for Palace, I've written off Johnson for this season anyway. Hopefully a pre season under the new manager can turn him around. But I'm getting negative vibes about JSL. After a decent start with those goals against Burnley, he's not done much since. When Mateta replaced him yesterday I thought his performance highlighted all of JSL's shortcomings. Again, my hope is that he offers more next season under a new regime.

That was a welcome win. Any nagging doubts about being caught by Forest, West Ham or Spurs are now dispelled. The subs made a huge difference. I thought we were drifting towards a lame 0-1 defeat up until then.

Newcastle were interested in JSL but signed Woltemade instead, for an outlay which could reach £69 Mill.
Yesterday, Newcastle's scorer Osula who cost £15 Mill looked more accomplished than JSL.
Apropos the goal he scored I have been contemplating whether Henderson could have been proactive, advancing forward and pouncing on the ball. He just stood off and the ball was forced past him from a close range.

If people are expecting Larsen to be another Mateta type centre forward they are likely to be disappointed.
There only similarity is that they play in the same position.
Larsen is not a physically imposing or dominant centre forward.
He rarely wins duels with opposing centre backs.
He can link play , but usually when in space and unchallenged.
I think the key for him is a reliable early stream of passes and crosses into the box for him to finish.
As we don't play that way under Glasner I'm not confident that we will see a dramatic uptick in form from him this season.

JSL is adept at getting on the end of crosses aerially whereas Mateta for all his height does not excel in this aspect of the game. His former coach at a French club commented that Mateta is more accomplished with his feet than his head.
Simon Jordan a few months ago labelled JSL a 'Donkey' !

I know 40 points is seen as the benchmark for survival but the reality is its lower than that .Looking at the table and fixtures its likely this season will be much like 80% of seasons when 38 would be enough
Even 36 is good enough more times than not (60%) though that number is certainly squeaky bum time .

Suffice to say I was happy when we got to 38 but am glad all over that we can all celebrate as one in whatever the rest of the season brings .

Have a drink on me

Int eh 2002/3 season, which like now was a 38 game season West Ham were relegated with 42 pts, so you never know for sure although I accept 42 Pts is better than being on 39pts

Where did the ref get those extra minutes in stoppage time from?

5 minutes on the board we were still playing after 10, didn't do my nerves any good.

Eddie Howe took it surprisingly well, given away by a shirt-tug in front of the ref that's really bad in the 90+3rd minute.

😎

The award of the penalty to the completion took some time and there were also 3 substitutions made by Newcastle.

Wow your a hard task master Willo not much Henderson could do , Lacroix set that up if it was coming through clean Deano may have had a chance

TBF, and I am a huge fan of both these players, for their goal it looked quite a tame, perhaps tired effort from Lacroix to clear the initial cross.

I think this threw Henderson off (who might have expected Lacroix to deal with it) but even so, he looked equally tame and tired in doing anything with the aftermath of the ball arriving to Osula. Was hardly a world class or difficult finish from Osula, just demonstrated where a bit of energy/effort and persistence can get you.

Still though, 3 points, saftey near guaranteed, a European semi-final very likely, I'm nay bothered!

I appreciate Lacroix's part in the goal, however the ball got wedged between Osula's legs and he had time to prod it past Henderson who was static instead of being proactive and not allowing the forward the time to force the ball home.
In any event, over the season, and before, Henderson has been a real asset to the team so jolly well done to him.

I reckon that if Lacroix had made proper contact, running at that angle he would have blasted the ball past a helpless Deano anyway.

Not forgeting Mitchell (MOM) was nutmegged for the cross to come in. I also thought Henderson was a bit slow challenging the ball / scorer. Great 3 points though and safety is just about ours 🙂

Either way, I certainly slept a lot easier now that we reached 42 points (and just imagine with 45). Only another 12 from 21 and we top last season. See, I can enjoy a half-full glass.
