Crystal Palace v Aston Villa - Match thread

Great result tonight. Our 11 lasted the whole match other than a strange substitution at the end replacing Devenny with Sosa? It helped us that Villa play a slow play out from the back which meant we didn’t get so knackered after an hour as normal. Thought Mateta looked better tonight than recent performances which was probably down to Johnson being a better No 10 than others have been alongside him. Just needs Sarr back to replace Pino to have a better front 3 and goals just may happen again for us. Agree with most in that Hughes was MOM tonight and the middle back 3 looking strong. Henderson also making some great saves. Onwards to the cup match this Saturday and bigger gaps between matches 🙂

Showed fighting spirit there. Everyone put a shift in. Wharton excellent. Guehi and Lacroix also good as was Mitchell. Canvot did well all things considered. Some errors but to be expected from a young player and some excellent composed defending.

Attacking wise Johnson did pretty well I thought. Has definitely injected some pace and directness. Good runs in behind.

Pino (shakes head sadly and slowly).

Good effort really
This

Thought we played well, certainly better than some recent performances and we more than deserved our point. The commitment of every player makes me confident we’ll get through this lean spell once we get players back.

As for Johnson, it’s just not quite going for him yet, but he looks lively enough and he’s always involved in the games. Shame he hasn’t got as many goals as he’s got bookings 😃

It looked like OG shifted him wider right in the 2nd half. Was a bit close to JPM first half. Seem to open villa up on that side so BJ could be in Munoz ish position till he returns.

Great point.

Positives - no new injuries, Johnson looks dangerous, Wharton outstanding, CBs all class, 10 days until next league game

Negatives - Devenny should not be getting this much game time for us, getting harder and harder to work out exactly what Pino adds, Mateta just seems completely f***ed, got to be the weakest bench since we got promoted

WIth another signing or two, players back from injury and some time to rest and train, we can start hurting teams again

Johnson looked promising. Good to see him getting stuck in. He may do well ahead of Mitchell (who had a great game) when Sarr is back. Guehi and Wharton both shined in front of Tuchel. Both so composed.
Canvot is a big lad he takes no nonsense. Really improving. Lacroix solid as ever.
We just need goals. When Sarr is back, Mateta will liven up and we will be awesome.

well summaried ^^^
Hopefully Johnson will start getting goals, and the others can follow his lead.

Great tactical performance from us. Villa like to invite teams on to press high and then go long.

JP was clearly told to let the keeper have it and not get drawn into the trap, which he did well.

Outside that he bashed the fullback off the ball once, but just isn't putting it about as much as he was. Feel like he is easy to play against at present. Certainly does more cheerleading than running.

Canvot, a few silly mistakes, but for a 19 year old the boy sure is strong. And fights hard in his 50/50s. If only JP did the same.

Johnson has mad a difference down the left, already look more expansive. Will increase 10 fold when Munoz is back.

Overall a great performance given the circumstances.

I like Devenny ,he is a trier but as you say we should have better and we do when all our players are fit and on duty .He is a squad man that covers many positions and is the perfect sub .Thats not an insult just probably his best position 🙂

I was really impressed with the team effort last night , Canvot will be a beast ,Hughes must be the best out of possession midfielder in the league and bossed the midfield with Wharton who is just a Rolls Royce of a player who MUST be a starter for the watching Tuchel in the summer .

Speaking of the summer its possible that even our mis-firing front three last night could be there as well . As you say Pino is an enigma ,many players from other nations take time to settle into English football , some better players than him never do . But he seems part of the group ,I'm sure he will come good .

This is a very decent Villa side and they will be glad to see the back of us for another season .

I understand that people want Canvot to do well, but it’s very early to go overboard.
He shows promise but makes mistakes through miskicks, getting caught under the ball and not competing well in aerial duels.
All this understandable as he’s only 19 and has not played many senior games and I’m sure he will improve in these areas.
Nonetheless, at this stage I feel it’s too early for him and feel more content when Guehi, Lacroix, Richards or Lerma are in the back 3.

Only seen the highlights but it looked a pretty good performance to me particularly the early Wharton to Johnson chance.

I concur with these sentiments.

At this stage he’s not Lacroix and a long way off being Guehi but he’s improving with game time and didn’t make many mistakes last night despite being up against a frightening trio on that side. He also got back to cover for Lacroix in the middle on occasion. In terms of errors he was no worse than Lerma who doesn’t have agar and inexperience as an excuse. Richards is clearly the best option currently and his aerial ability complements the other two, but Canvot is the best backup. Might be worth trying him on the left against Macclesfield to give Guehi a rest.
