Crystal Palace v Aston Villa - Match thread

What those who were not there don’t realise is that the numpty groundskeeper over-watered the pitch before the game and at half time. What looked like overhit passes on many occasions was the ball skidding off the surface when landing from long balls. The more experienced professionals can cope with this but the younger players will take time to learn about the effects of wet pitches. Even at the end of the match I noticed Hendo squelching up water from the surface when going to take a kick.

This happened a lot during the Hodgson era with players conceding goals or missing shots after slipping. I thought we had got rid of this problem.

groundsman meet managers in lead up to a game to discuss how they want the pitch, grass length, amount of watering etc depending on tactics, opposition etc. I know this from doing work expierience with an ex palace groundsman.

I had a feeling we'd get a point and in the end we could very easily have nicked a win. There is not one team in the Prem that would have been either unhappy with our result against an in form Villa nor our performance.
Some strong and solid performances all over the pitch. Hendo, Hughes, Max, Guehi all played fantastic. For me though the stand out man of the match was Wharton. His passing, tackling, range and vision were just on a different level to anyone else on the pitch. People gush over Tielemans. I'd take Adam over him every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
It will be a disgrace if he is not on that plane in the summer

And the player of the match (CPFC site) is ????????

Jaydee Canvot.

Congratulations!

🙂
The fans who voted for him have been generous IMO. He did well all things considered (him and Devenny up against Rogers and Digne) but he did make a few potentially fatal errors which, fortunately, were sorted by his team mates.

Yes, I voted, and went for Hughes. For me it was a tossup between him and Wharton.

Canvot is very inexperienced, having only played 18 games in 'Ligue 1' before arriving at our club.
He did make some mistakes last night but he is not the finished article and he was pitted against talented strikers. He will learn with experience.
In my humble opinion he has the potential to be a defender of some repute.

The average age for a defender in the Premier League is mid to late twenties. It is very unusual for a younger defender to start due to their lack of experience and likelihood to make a mistake (which often leads to a goal.) like others have said Canvot done well despite a few errors which thankfully were not punished on this occasion.

A fair summary. An interesting comparison is Marc Guehi. Before joining us MG played no games in the top flight and just over 50 games across a season and a half in the Championship for Swansea (the Swansea team made the playoffs twice but was not promoted in either season).

At their age minutes maybe matters as much if not more than the level. But I have high hopes for JC with us and see him as a first team successor to MG over Riad.

Showed fighting spirit there. Everyone put a shift in. Wharton excellent. Guehi and Lacroix also good as was Mitchell. Canvot did well all things considered. Some errors but to be expected from a young player and some excellent composed defending.

Attacking wise Johnson did pretty well I thought. Has definitely injected some pace and directness. Good runs in behind.

Pino (shakes head sadly and slowly).

Good effort really
🤣🤣🤣

Our scouts watched him playing in 19 games for Swansea before we acquired him.
They reported that his decision making was his best attribute with one reporting that he never takes the wrong option.

Of all the English players that Tuchel would have been looking at during the game I believe that the Palace contingent stood out more than the Villa players.
I think that Ty should absolutely get in the squad and obviously Mark and Deano are no brainers.
My only concern is Adam Wharton! He is definitely a great player for Palace but he didn’t play particularly well the last time he played in an England shirt. Also as good as he is, I think he needs to improve on a few things before he is at that level.

I would love him to demand the ball more from the central defenders, when they have the ball it doesn’t often get played into Adam’s feet and when it does it is more of a 1-2 back to the defenders. I know it is difficult but he needs to find space between the opposing attack and midfield whereas I see him a lot of the time level with the attackers and then not in a position to receive the ball.
The other thing I would love to see him do is drive into the space more. Yes his passing and intelligence is exceptional but if he could beat a player and then get a shot off he would truly be world class. I am sure this will come with age and experience as he is clearly a player that wants to improve.

Don’t all moan it’s just my opinion on why I don’t think he is ready for England.

Yep. He actually tried to control/kick the ball a few times yesterday and actually didn’t even touch it.
Work in progress

The Lerma who deputised so successfully for Guehi in the back 3 that Guehi was barely missed, including in the cup final?
The Lerma who deputised so successfully for Richards at the end of Glasner's first season that Richards was barely missed?
The Lerma who is key to winning aerial duels in both boxes as well as being the owner of a valuable long throw.

I have to disagree in terms of who the best back up is and at this stage and would take Lerma over Canvot any day of the week.
I hope Canvot has a great career at Palace but would be cautious of over promoting him at this moment in time.

I was actually surprised how strong/ tenacious Johnson was a few times in the second half.
Decent upper body strength for a skinny piece of p*ss

i think a point against a decent and very in from Villa side is more than acceptable and the 2nd half was encouraging.

1st half was tight but we had 35% possession and 3 touches in the opposition box (according to Sky) which is surely unacceptable for a home performance.

Johnson looks a decent acquisition but other than pace his game looks a little limited - can't beat a man and is a little lightweight. I thought the booking was a bit harsh, not sure he was diving. He will need to watch that though as like Zaha you can get an unfair reputation for diving.

Pino needs to step up and unfortunately is not doing so - his corners are pretty average too.

I don't like to criticise Devenny too much as he is clearly playing out of position but both last night and v Spurs when he had the chances at the back post a more confident player would have buried both. Although the ball was at an awkward height if he had stepped inside the defender onto his preferred left foot or rolled it across to Johnson it would have been a certain goal.

Canvot shows promise but another horrible miskick shows he still has lots to learn.

When i saw the weak subs bench i said that barring injuries i don't think we'd make a sub and i was almost right. Uche with 20 to go would have been my go to.

Ridiculous.

He is a young man having to fill in before he has much experience. He did OK but made mistakes that could have been costly.
He will be an asset in the future, but he is at the bottom of that learning curve.

The lad did a great job against quality players. He kept them quiet and outmuscled them. So he missed a kick. Big deal. It happens to the best players. If that performance was the bottom of the learning curve then he’s going to be world class one day!

I'm not sure that anything I said contradicts any of that.

The 'big deal' is that mistakes cost goals in the Premier League. That is why you don't see many teenage defenders. They are inconsistent.

I know that some Palace fans can't stand the idea of any opinion that is short of gushing praise, but you will have to live with it.

Obviously he is human and mistakes will be made, the better players clearly make less mistakes.

The complete miskick SHOULD have resulted in a goal and the Fulham one was horrendous and SHOULD also have led to a winning goal.

Fine margins etc. If he had cost us points i suspect your post would be different.

Indeed, mistakes always seam less bad if one of your teammates can clean up behind you.

Regardless, for 19, he's a beast. Huge huge talent.

Correct. Tony Adams made mistakes at the same age hence the nickname Donkey. It's a position like goalkeeper that requires experience, so far the lad has done well.
