Crystal Palace v Aston Villa - Match thread

I like Devenny ,he is a trier but as you say we should have better and we do when all our players are fit and on duty .He is a squad man that covers many positions and is the perfect sub .Thats not an insult just probably his best position 🙂

I was really impressed with the team effort last night , Canvot will be a beast ,Hughes must be the best out of possession midfielder in the league and bossed the midfield with Wharton who is just a Rolls Royce of a player who MUST be a starter for the watching Tuchel in the summer .

Speaking of the summer its possible that even our mis-firing front three last night could be there as well . As you say Pino is an enigma ,many players from other nations take time to settle into English football , some better players than him never do . But he seems part of the group ,I'm sure he will come good .

This is a very decent Villa side and they will be glad to see the back of us for another season .
Agreed. I think he plays left wing back for Northern Ireland?

The problem last night was that playing on the right he couldn't cross the ball so kept having to cut back inside or pass inside. That's is not his fault if you told Maradona not to use his left foot...

So he didn't let us down (never does) but his attacking options were limited.

Personally I think he's a great find and I bet Glasner loves the guy. He plays multiple positions and follows instructions.

I just hope that over time he can concentrate on one position.

At this stage he’s not Lacroix and a long way off being Guehi but he’s improving with game time and didn’t make many mistakes last night despite being up against a frightening trio on that side. He also got back to cover for Lacroix in the middle on occasion. In terms of errors he was no worse than Lerma who doesn’t have agar and inexperience as an excuse. Richards is clearly the best option currently and his aerial ability complements the other two, but Canvot is the best backup. Might be worth trying him on the left against Macclesfield to give Guehi a rest.
The Lerma who deputised so successfully for Guehi in the back 3 that Guehi was barely missed, including in the cup final?
The Lerma who deputised so successfully for Richards at the end of Glasner's first season that Richards was barely missed?
The Lerma who is key to winning aerial duels in both boxes as well as being the owner of a valuable long throw.

I have to disagree in terms of who the best back up is and at this stage and would take Lerma over Canvot any day of the week.
I hope Canvot has a great career at Palace but would be cautious of over promoting him at this moment in time.

...or not use his left hand.

I'm not sure what Emery was thinking with the way Villa set up last night. If he'd sent his team out to make us work harder then we might have tired and then he could have used subs to win the game. Instead, Villa slowed the game down to a crawl, allowing us to have probably had our strongest second half in weeks. I also think last night was an example of why we shouldn't suddenly switch formation. We largely nullified the most in-form team in the PL despite our injuries and fatigue and even had chances to win the game.

Canvot and Devenny worked really hard to shut down Rogers, which was key. In fact, the general effort and desire on display meant that was a well-earned point. Villa never really reached that same level. Hopefully, this is the start of a return to form.

Exactly how I saw the game, bad tactics by Villa which allowed our only first teamers left to get a point 🙂

i think a point against a decent and very in from Villa side is more than acceptable and the 2nd half was encouraging.

1st half was tight but we had 35% possession and 3 touches in the opposition box (according to Sky) which is surely unacceptable for a home performance.

Johnson looks a decent acquisition but other than pace his game looks a little limited - can't beat a man and is a little lightweight. I thought the booking was a bit harsh, not sure he was diving. He will need to watch that though as like Zaha you can get an unfair reputation for diving.

Pino needs to step up and unfortunately is not doing so - his corners are pretty average too.

I don't like to criticise Devenny too much as he is clearly playing out of position but both last night and v Spurs when he had the chances at the back post a more confident player would have buried both. Although the ball was at an awkward height if he had stepped inside the defender onto his preferred left foot or rolled it across to Johnson it would have been a certain goal.

Canvot shows promise but another horrible miskick shows he still has lots to learn.

When i saw the weak subs bench i said that barring injuries i don't think we'd make a sub and i was almost right. Uche with 20 to go would have been my go to.

well summaried ^^^
Hopefully Johnson will start getting goals, and the others can follow his lead.
Remember when Sarr started, he took a while to get to grips with Glasner's system. Once he got there he is virtually unstoppable. Problem is, at the speed he operates it is clearly hard to be dead accurate all the time, hence a fair few close misses crosses etc. I see Johnson playing with a similar style. Last night, he showed his pace and also that he is no light weight and prepared to get stuck in. Exactly like Sarr.
Once these two and Mateta get an understanding, watch out premier.!

Lerma has a huge jump in him. I reckon he gets up above the crossbar on occasions.

He’s proving to be a good squad player but almost always out of position which impacts on impressions as to his abilities voiced on this board. It says something that he was preferred to Sosa at RWB last night in the absence of Munoz and Clyne. Sosa must surely be shipped out this month if we can find a buyer. Reports are he’s happy to stay despite not getting many minutes. Generally a sign of high wages and low ambition!

I’d like to see Devenny having a run at LWB but he’s unlikely to displace Mitchell who is consistent and generally injury free. For the time being he is a useful squad player and clearly valued by Glasner.

What those who were not there don’t realise is that the numpty groundskeeper over-watered the pitch before the game and at half time. What looked like overhit passes on many occasions was the ball skidding off the surface when landing from long balls. The more experienced professionals can cope with this but the younger players will take time to learn about the effects of wet pitches. Even at the end of the match I noticed Hendo squelching up water from the surface when going to take a kick.

This happened a lot during the Hodgson era with players conceding goals or missing shots after slipping. I thought we had got rid of this problem.

Canvot looked like he either slipped or mis controlled the ball a coupe of times, but couldn't see properly form the Hol end. Anyone see if from closer? Was it the pitch?
