Ben Chilwell

It is an odd one.
We need cover but it has to be presumed that if he comes to us that he will get game time and that seems unfair on Mitchell.
Also - if he is to be guaranteed minutes then it could be disruptive to what is a very strong defence now.
I would have preferred a less experienced "apprentice" to come in instead.

This is exactly where I'm at. Plus Chilwell is going to need a couple of weeks to get up to speed. Then would feel pretty harsh to drop TM for c.10 games.

A few outlets reporting that he's having a medical this morning

I think the challenge is there wasn’t really an apprentice available at a sensible price. Looked like the chap from Sparta Prague was going to cost upwards of £20m. Not sure Palace can afford to be spending £20m on a LWB who doesn’t play much.

My guess is Chilwell total cost until June will be c.£1.5m, which in the bigger picture will be ok for us.
From Chelsea's point of view they can have a top player playing premier football for half a season as opposed to rusting away on the training fields.
Good deal all round.

Really not keen to give Chelsea a load of money to get one of their injury prone player fit again.
Rather save that cash for the summer.
Do we not have a junior player that can play the occasional games with Mitchell/Jeffrey/Clyne?

If your guess is correct it makes sense. If his contribution helps us finish one place higher it'll be worth £3 and if we can play out the season on the front foot make the club more attractive to prospective signings.
Or he comes in acting like Charlie Big Spud, gets/stays injured and we're out £1.5 m.
Place your bets.

My opinion (and, of course, that's all it is) is:
  1. Clyne isn't good enough to play LWB - ok as RCB cover and RWB cover
  2. Schlupp simply isn't up to playing the LWB role. Ok as an emergency left side attacker but he won't get up and down the pitch if Mitchell gets injured (and Mitchell limped off yesterday)
  3. And no, we don't have a junior who can fill in as a LWB especially if Mitchell's injury is going to keep him out of the next league game(s).
  4. I trust the club know what they're doing on this one.

My 10p worth…

We have no cover at the moment for Mitchell who for me is a shoe in to start and is our main left back / make do wing back.
Chilwell may well have spoken to Trev and Connor, with them explaining that our facilities are good, team spirit is good and if he gets minutes and does well the support is fantastic. Let’s be honest, I hated them for going back to Chelsea but we would rather have kept Connor and Trevor. We may feel the same about Chillwell.

If he gets injured, well it’s not the end of the world as it’s just a short term loan, yes we will get him fit and yes he will likely be too expensive for us if that happens but Mitchell needs cover. He looked knackered when he came off and it would be nice to be able to rest the kid from time to time and, he may learn a thing or two from Chillwell which is no bad thing.

The commentators yesterday on the feed I was watching were full of praise for Mitchell, I think he gets a rough ride on here to be honest and we will only fully appreciate how good he is when somebody swoops in and takes him.

Unless of course Mitchell is on his way out today. Then it all makes some sort of sense.
I think if Mitchell goes out Ollie will follow him out the door. No cover and as much as the chillwell deal makes sense it only makes sense as back up or option not as a replacement. Mitchell is very rarely missing no way would anybody rely on chillwell to stay fit for half a season.

Having Chilwell sending in crosses for Mateta to finish, or whipping in set piece deliveries for our centre backs to attack takes our attacking options up another notch.
It has the potential to elevate our season if he remains fit.
