Ben Chilwell

I think passing the medical might be the hard bit
That medical protocol in full:

1. Ben this is our treatment room as you can see it' quite lovely and comfortable, we hope you have many happy hours here. Check.
2. Please try out the treatment table is it to your liking. Check.
3. Do you enjoy the music we're playing through the sound system. Check
4. I'm sorry but the room is a bit quiet at the moment as we have lost a couple of long term guests, still Doucoure and Riaz will be with you for some time. Check.

etc.

The first thing that sprung to mind was why? Unless we are getting him in as cover and paying a fraction of what he is on a Chelsea I just don't get it .

We are not in a relegation situation , we are not challenging for a European spot so whats the point . Mitchell is capable enough ,who hardly ever misses a game we have cover with Clyne so why ?

For sure all positions are open for upgrades and LWB is probably near the top of the list but spend the money in the summer on a decent permanent player ,just seems strange to me bringing in a player we dont need for 4 months .
Unless of course Tyrick is on his way out

This signing is all about this season allowing us to push on and then get Duoif or similar in the summer, as buying them would have too expensive now, so we have parked that for now.

And with Trevor going we have some spare budget for another wage (you know we ain’t paying all of it)

Looking at our left back options, Mitchell is an outstanding defender, no one I would rather have and starting with him and Munoz gives us a nice balance at the moment. However if we are running out of time for a goal and need to push on more, we do not have a more aggressive option than Mitchell to stretch the oppo.

Clyne is right footed and if you watched the Stockport match you would have seen that he cannot offer any width on the left.

Oliver does not fancy Schlupp.

So we have a gap and 20 minutes of chillwell off the bench sounds great to me.

potential downside, I can’t see really see any.

Might as well rename the transfer window the unwanted Chelsea player loan window. Still without it we’d have done f all business recently

We have a first team regular who completes 90 minutes every game in a defence that isn't conceding large amounts, and the club goes for a sicknote Chelsea reject on ridiculous wages to cover for a few months.
Whatever could possibly go wrong?

Those unwanted Chelsea players have served us well. If he does as well as the last 2 I’ll be happy. As regards the f all, young Esse was a good bit of business and the window ain’t closed yet!

It was evident again yesterday that Glasner’s system is well suited to away games.
Hence our good results and yet another transition goal yesterday with 3
passes through the heart of the United defence for Mateta’s second goal.
We are afforded the space for this type of goal when away from home.

At home it’s different where there’s less space to operate and this is I think where Chilwell comes in.
His quality is a different level from Mitchell in going forward in terms of taking up advanced positions and then delivery from those positions.

He’s a good set piece taker too with the ability to whip the ball in at pace and he pops up with the occasional goal too (9 in 107 games for Chelsea).
The only real issue (and it is a significant one) relates to fitness.
However, if it’s only a loan I don’t see it as a huge risk.

He’s a class player and I think will be impressed if he joins.

We also, as has been discussed at great length on here, have one left back / LWB. That means we are one injury away from having a key position we can’t adequately cover.

As I said before lots of people have castigated the club for our lack of cover and options at LWB. When the club addresses that, all be it for the short term, then we get people criticising them for it. I’m really not sure what people want sometimes

Medical booked apparently. Most players you'd expect that to be a formality but given his injury record...

Although, having said that, the amount of players who do pass our medicals and then spend their lives injured, it's perhaps not the most stringent process.

How many fingers am I holding up?

Err, close enough.

I think the fact he can fill in on the left-side of the back three is another tick in his box. If we get the Chilwell of a few years ago then it is a great deal, so if he signs we just have to see which version we have. Drinkwater is now a builder, so if Ben follows a similar trajectory to his former Leicester and Chelsea teammate then we could always get him to start work on the new stand if he offers nothing on the pitch.

With you on this one.

Would have preferred a permanent LWB, but this guy for 6 months works for me.

But will he play? Perhaps 90 minutes v Doncaster will offer a decent test.
