Wolf Hall

i disagree. You CAN sometimes watch these things for the comedy value. See the World through Lefty distorted eyes.

My favourite example ? The movie 'Mary, Queen of Scots' starring Saoirse Ronan. Step into a hardcore Presbyterian Church in Scotland of the 1500's.......and you could be forgiven for mistaking the congregation of Scots for the crowd at a Jerk Chicken shop in West Croydon 2024.
And all the po faced Lefties see absolutely nothing wrong with their interpretation of History. Surely its Gary Linekar's favourite movie.

And the other re-invented history ? is the LGBTQ narrative being lauded as a virtue in itself and becoming the central tenet of the whole story ? Alexander the Great ( Colin Farrell ) and Barbarians against Romans at the Teutoberg Forest ( Armenius with a high ranking boyfriend). is Woke politics re-inventing our history ?

Wolf Hall ........... i havent seen the new series. But i am expecting a lecture about Climate Change causing the Break with Rome, the disestablishment of the monasteries and Henry viii's fertility problems.
The real actual left wouldn't go near this woke kak.

It is odd that words like "witch hunt" and "oppressive" fit well with what purports to be a liberal ideology. It is far from that.

People flock to the populist right not because they are attracted by their policies. They would have to be pretty dumb to be lured by those snake oil sellers. No, it is because they are fleeing this new ideology that probably meant well back at its birth but is now innately repellant and McCarthyite.

It's not about the acting.
I appreciate that Black actors might not have many good parts in historical dramas, but there is more here than the careers of actors.
It is about the misrepresentation of history. It is the kind of thing you might expect when one's history and heritage is being deliberately undermined by those with an agenda.
If the woke stop whining about cultural appropriation, black face, inappropriate racial casting and the rest, then I will chill out about a Henry VIII's courtiers being Black.

What next? Winston Churchill played by RuPaul? Joan of Arc played by Oprah Winfrey? It's ridiculous and offensive.
I don't say this often about your posts (especially your music taste!) but on this one...

...I...

...agree...

...every...

...word.

Precisely.

I had hoped this discussion would have been about a very good TV production not the fall back diatribe on woke…. again! Obviously mistaken. I am still enjoying it though.
I don't see your problem with our problem. Those who post against woke are not all ultra right gammons. I am considered leftist/centrist and definitely of the sandal wearing brigade (I actually don't); but I still hate the sledge hammer social engineering aspect to inclusivity.

Merit and authenticity work for me.

Also, the rank hypocrisy. If the Mahabharata was made into a movie or there was a biopic about Azikiwe or Marcus Garvey and white actors were cast in prominent roles of people of colour, there would be rioting and deaths in Kingston, Lagos and Delhi. No question.

A mixed race cast for e.g. a modern cop procedure like Luther I can have no issue with. Casting a black or Asian man to play Richard III...

You can enjoy what you like.

That doesn't alter the glaring double standards and the distortion of historical reality.
That is beyond dispute.

the herioc Henry V ? possibly. But it will never happen with Richard III. Not on account of the original fella being white, but on account of him having been a nasty villain.

Will smith as a heroic Welsh Guardsman in a 'Zulu' re-make
There should have been plenty of black soldiers at Rorke's Drift but I believe their officers did everything they could to avoid it and many ran away. I don't really blame them for not wanting to hang about, but do remember Britain/Empire/England had no qualms about black people in the armed forces in general.
Probably the most famous being the sailor in the Nelson painting who was decorated for killing the French sniper that shot Nelson. I can't remember the name: Henry Something. Which was 100 years before Rorke's Drift.

British colonial forces not permitted to hold an officer rank.

The Natal Natives had white officers - who largely tried to avoid Rorke's Drift. To clarify what I said. Can you blame them? There was one who tried shooting his men I believe but as far as I can tell, he didn't succeed. The rest ran away too. Or quickly manoeuvred away let's say.

Probably.

How about Idris Elba playing King Cnut, Samuel Pepys, Isaac Newton or Barnes Wallis?
Or Jack the Ripper.
Eye witness report.
"It was a man. He was tall. Maybe in his 40's. He was right handed".
" Anything else?"
" Nothing springs to mind".

And this sums up the Woke view of history quite nicely.

There should have been black soldiers but there weren't it, doesn't matter why they were not there.

So the Woke go through the history books and say "boo woman were not allowed to be doctors or go to university" "Where are the black characters in our great novels, so let's rewrite history". Hollywood loves to do this e.g. Quentin Tarantino's last few films have rewritten history the way it should have been not the way it was.

The answer to which can be found in his first sentence.

You know, this being a time when we cared more about winning the actual wars rather than what pearl clutchers, who never had to dig a trench in their lives, thought about it.
