Whether or not the fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv instigate violence or attract it is irrelevant to the need for the police to keep the peace. At a time of high tension I can understand why it is felt necessary to avoid the possibility of fuses being lit.

If the police believe they can handle cricket match rivalry at a time of political tension but not football rivalry then perhaps it’s the games, the times, and the way the crowds arrive and disperse that’s different. That’s for them to decide. Not us.

That’s just a barefaced lie. The actual report from the Amsterdam council puts it down to a toxic combination of events, many of which were initiated by Maccabi hooligans which led to innocent Maccabi fans being attacked in retaliation. The initial video report from the Dutch reporter on the ground shows a large mob of clearly identified Maccabi hooligans chasing and attacking individual Amsterdammers. Unless they have weeded out this, substantial, hooligan element and can guarantee that they won’t be there they’re right to ban them. As they did Legia Warsaw fans for the same reason.

Several clubs have restrictions in force, so Maccabi haven’t been singled out. There were some violent incidents in Athens, they probably target higher profile games. The safety assessment is made using info supplied by other European police forces. Sounds like there was enough there to ban them.
