US Politics

I thought that was good from Mrs T at the time, of course she became completely the opposite.

Integrity from Sunak takes the prize for me, I think all the comments made by an incoming PM on the steps last until they get just inside the door but no further .

😎
Like Tesco bananas. Fresh as a daisy at the checkout; by the time you've entered your front door they're brown. 😕

I wonder what all the “free speech absolutists” that advocate that people ought be allowed to say whatever they like whenever they want and accuse those who disagree of getting upset at “hurty words” make of this:-

Seems to me the US administration can dish it out in bucket loads but cannot tolerate even a whisper of criticism.

Er, yeah, he's obviously got a grip on things.

He suggested that South Africa was under attack because "we are the historical antidote to supremacism".

What he said is true.

Not physically but the US administration has been going out of its way to criticise land reform and defend the actions of “white” Afrikaan farmers. Thus interfering in another country’s politics.

Yet when their Ambassador points this out they decide he has run out of welcome.

It’s regrettably typical. Just look at the way Zelenskyy has been treated.

And that makes South Africa the antidote to supremecism does it? Would have thought that was a subject in which they should have some expertise.
Besides, haven't you been saying it's America's duty to keep the peace around the world? How do you propose they do that without interfering in other countries' politics?

I don’t have an opinion on it other than that the Ambassador has a right to express his.

America providing the resources needed to support international peace keeping efforts is indeed a responsibility that the most successful economy ought to accept. It has been blessed with a wealth of natural resources. However it still needs to trade to prosper and it needs friends to do so. Stopping wars helps build economies and therefore markets. Withdrawing into isolationism is not in their ultimate interest. It’s quitting the race while ahead and allowing your competition to just walk in.

None of which is the point. Whatever we think of the USA’s role as an international policeman doesn’t impact the right of an Ambassador to express his opinion. Trump is so thin skinned he cannot abide criticism and is quick to suspend freedom of speech as soon as that speech is uncomplimentary.

No opinion on South Africa being the antidote to supremacism? Or can't think of anything to support the claim?
How does America stop these wars without interfering in others' politics?

I don’t have an opinion because I haven’t thought about it because it’s not the subject.

There is a difference between interfering in order to manipulate things to your advantage and trying to facilitate negotiations that lead to a successful resolution between the parties involved that’s fair and sustainable.

Ask yourself what Trump’s motivations are and you have the answer on whether he is interfering or facilitating.

There is also a difference between governments acting out of pure altruism and having varying degrees of self interest. It's like the aid programme which is often tied in to trade deals beneficial to the donor rather than just helping others.

Do you know any white South Africans.
Speak to some before giving an opinion about how great the country is. They want to do a Zimbabwean law on white farms by just taking them. That worked well over there as the blacks can’t farm and don’t have a clue.
Eat the livestock, eat the wheat then starve because it isn’t replenished.. alongside 10,000s of out of work farm hands and you want to be their friend !

The worst thing about Zimbabwe was the farms were given to the wrong people.

Most of the major farms have villages linked to them and those folk have worked on the farms for years. So although white owned the locals benefited from jobs. If the government had taken it from whitey and given it to the locals they would have had a point.

However Mugabe gave the farms to his ANC mates who were not local and had no interest in farming. They stripped the farms of everything of value and left them to rot. In many cases they even drove away the local black farmers who objected as it would destroy their livelihood.

And sadly it did in many cases. The country is full of potential but alas too many taking at the top.

He's an idiot.

The job of an Ambassador is to be diplomatic, it is up to politicians if they want to offend another country. If this guy wants to start Trump bashing he is in the wrong job and should stand for the South African parliament.

He's done his country no favours.

Just before WWII Joe Kennedy father of the future President Kennedy was US Ambassador to the UK. He was pro Irish anti British and an isolationist. He upset the British establishment with his opinions and did his country no favours. Eventually Roosevelt had to get rid of him by bypassing him with his dealing with the UK government Kennedy had no choice but to resign somewhat in disgrace.

Kennedy's real problem was that he behaved like a politician and not a diplomat.

I was with one this morning and had a beer and a chat. He lives here now. There is no scheme like that in Zimbabwe. The scheme is described here:-

Money is being granted to allow the disadvantaged to purchase land.

That is your opinion to which you are obviously entitled. If the South African government agreed with you then they would have withdrawn him. They didn’t. They must approve of his words. The thin skinned Trump administration have though made him unwelcome.

Not really true as 3 months ago it would have been zim mk 2. They reeled it back after trump threatened to pull any aid.
